Off the field, Jay Valai has been the most promising assistant coach since Tom Herman hired the new staff. The cornerbacks coach has been a monster on the recruiting circuit, landing players such as Billy Bowman, Ishmael Ibraheem, J.D. Coffey, and recently, Jamier Johnson. He alone could be the one to thank for the momentum and success in the 2021 recruiting class.

Recruiting is the foundation of any football program but as Texas fans know, they must turn that high school talent into collegiate talent. With former blue-chip players such as D’Shawn Jamison, Jalen Green, and Chris Adimora on the roster, Valai needs to help improve the unit significantly. Arguably the best position group on the roster, on paper, there will be serious questions if the production on the field does not match the hype of the player’s recruiting ranking.
