Outside of Tom Herman himself, there may not be another assistant that will be feeling that level of pressure more than Chris Ash. Following a dismal run as head coach at Rutgers, Ash reunites with Herman as the defensive coordinator. Ash spent time with Herman at both Iowa State and Ohio State. Now the two will work together once again and Ash has a monumental job of turning this defense around.

Last season the Longhorns ranked 97th in FBS for total defense at 431.5 yards per game. The defense also allowed 42 total touchdowns, 3.23 touchdowns per game. Ash’s old team Rutgers ranked 98th in college football. The lack of a pass rush needs to be addressed as well as the current linebacker situation. Both Juwan Mitchell and DeMarvion Overshown have been vocal about changes needing to be made at the university and the latter has not shown up to Austin.

When football finally kicks off, it will be the success of Ash’s defense that will determine the teams success.
