Number 54: Tommy Nobis, LB (1963-1965)
For the highest ranked Longhorn (so far), it comes from linebacker Tommy Nobis. Much like fellow Longhorn Vince Young, he would lead his team to a National Championship against Navy and Roger Staubach in 1963. Nobis is often remembered as one of the greatest linebackers ever to play the game.
On top of being an outstanding linebacker for the Longhorns, he was also a starter on the offensive line for Texas. He played all three years on both sides of the ball before leaving to chase his NFL dreams following the 1965 season.
“Aside from his super ability, he’s just one of those trained pigs you love,” Royal told Sports Illustrated. “He’ll laugh and jump right in the slop for you.- Darrell K. Royal to Sports Illustrated on Tommy Nobis
