Texas Longhorns Represented In ESPN’s Top 150 College Football Players List

The Texas Longhorns are well represented on the ESPN Top 150 college football players of all-time.

Number 75: Bobby Layne, QB (1944-1947)

Bobby Layne might not be remembered by the younger generations, but Layne was a driving force towards the Texas Longhorns during the mid 1940’s. Once upon a time freshman weren’t allowed to play their first year but due to World War II, they were which allowed Layne to be a four-year player for the Longhorns.

To this day Layne still holds the record for most touchdowns responsible for in the Cotton Bowl with six. It has since been matched and with the evolution of the offensive game of football, quite an accomplishment that it still stands almost 80 years later. Layne helped lead the Longhorns to a Sugar Bowl victory over sixth ranked Alabama in 1947.

Another record of note, Layne held the school record for most rushing touchdowns in a single game until the next Longhorn on the list surpassed it, Ricky Williams. Bobby Layne was also one of the best pitchers to ever play baseball for the University as well. He spent part of three different decades in the NFL and his number 22 jersey was retired by the Detroit Lions
