Texas Longhorns Football: Three things to watch for in the spring game

Texas’ first Orange and White game under Steve Sarkisian is set to take place on Saturday. Here are three things to watch for during it.

Prepare yourself for overreactions, no matter what happens in the spring game.

Hudson Card and Casey Thompson are in the middle of what seems to be a neck-and-neck quarterback battle. After a scrimmage last Saturday, Steve Sarkisian said “both really played well today. They really did. I’m recapping it in my brain. For the most part, they played really well.”

Coming into spring, Thompson was the perceived favorite due to his Alamo Bowl performance against Colorado. Now, it seems as some ground has been gained by Card due throughout practice. Even with the spring game on Saturday, no clear-cut favorite is going to be set.

Seeing how they operate in the offense and comparing them in a somewhat live-action game will give a sense of where both stand. While both Card and Thompson have at least a year of college under them, learning Sarkisian’s offense is a different animal.

Saturday’s spring game will show fans what Sarkisian has to work with before declaring a starter in the fall.

The second team’s quarterback could be of note as well. If either Card or Thompson decides to enter the transfer portal after losing the competition, the backup job would come down to sophomore walk-on Ben Ballard and true freshman Charles Wright. From there, it would take one injury before they are called in action.
