Texas lands commitment from the No. 1 in-state prospect

The Longhorns received a commitment from the top player in Texas in the 2023 recruiting class on Thursday.

The Texas Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian continue to build momentum on the recruiting trail.
Four-star running back Rueben Owens announced his commitment to the University of Texas on Thursday. As it’s still early for the 2023 cycle, Owens will likely increase to a five-star prospect by the time it is all said and done.

He’s listed as the No. 1 overall player from the state of Texas in the 2023 recruiting class and a top-30 prospect nationally according to 247Sports. In December, Owens released his top 10 schools of Baylor, Florida, Georgia, Houston, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, USC and Texas.

He later trimmed the list down to LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, and Texas A&M. It appears that the Longhorns and Sooners were the two favorites for the El Campo native, who is now Texas’ first commit in the 2023 class.

In 11 games last season, Owens ran for over 1,500 yards and found the endzone 22 times — all while splitting carries with junior Johntre Davis. As a result, he was awarded the District 12-4A-I Offensive MVP as a sophomore.

The Longhorns are quickly building one of the strongest running back rooms in the country. Take a look at Owens sophomore highlights below.
