The Longhorns received their first commitment for the 2023 recruiting class.
Four-star safety Jamel Johnson announced his commitment to the University of Texas on Thursday. The Arlington native is rated the No. 15 safety in the 2023 class and the No. 27 overall prospect from the state of Texas, according to 247Sports composite rankings.
The Longhorns originally extended an offer to the 6-foot-1, 175-pound safety on Feb. 11, and he compiled an impressive list of offers throughout his recruitment from schools such as Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Penn State, and Texas A&M among others.

In 2020, Johnson earned first-team all-district honors a sophomore for Seguin High School, and the year prior was named the District 5-5A-II Freshman of the Year.
Cooper Petagna, the 247Sports national recruiting analyst that evaluated Johnson, had plenty of positive things to say about him.
Ideal size and length at 6-foot plus, possesses growth potential to add additional weight to frame. Displays good athleticism on both sides of the ball. Reactionary athlete that shows the ability to transition in and out of breaks quickly. Utilizes length well in press coverage and at the point of attack. Flashes good ball awareness and activity playing the ball in the air. Appears to have above average play speed. Willing tackler that will strike you and excels in run support. Long speed and ability to play off-ball are a concern at times. Could potentially develop into a safety at the next level, depending on the defensive scheme. Has the ability to contribute early on special teams and develop into a good starter at the next level.
Texas is off to a great start for the 2023 cycle.
