Texas HC Steve Sarkisian signs four-year extension with Longhorns

BOOM! Steve Sarkisian inks four-year extension with Texas.

The suspense is over. Texas will not be losing its head coach Steve Sarkisian after speculation during the Alabama coaching search.

Sarkisian inked a four-year contract extension with the Longhorns to end the week of coaching carousel unease. It was a positive move for the program for multiple reasons.

Presumably, the news will provide more stability for the program coming off a playoff berth. Steve Sarkisian isn’t going anywhere. Players can have faith that their coach will see his contract through barring a call from an NFL franchise. Recruits and portal transfers won’t have to worry about Sarkisian bolting for another job like Washington’s Kalen DeBoer did.

The move also indicates that the school is fully committed to Sarkisian. That won’t mean that the Sarkisian era will be without stress moving forward, but takes some anxiety away from the coach and allows him to simply do his job. Both sides are committed to winning championships for Texas.

Sarkisian earned the extension. His list of accomplishments at Texas is much more impressive than it was a year ago. Under his leadership the team made a four-team College Football Playoff, won the Big 12 and won 12 games in 2023. The culture is as calm as it has been in recent memory.

As development goes, Sarkisian got a running back drafted No. 8 overall last offseason in Falcons running back Bijan Robinson. He could have plenty more players drafted in early rounds in the upcoming NFL draft.

Wins, development and culture earned an early contract extension for Sarkisian. There’s enough data to believe it will have been a good decision. The Sarkisian era will look for continued success in the SEC in 2024.
