How does the WR rotation shake out?
It has been talked about at great lengths throughout the offseason. The Texas Longhorns need to figure out how to deploy their wide receivers. Obviously no Jake Smith puts a damper on things, but Jordan Whittington is ready to step up in a game. He played in the opener last year before getting shut down for a sports hernia. All eyes will be on the running back/wide receiver hybrid threat this year.
The experienced transfer in Tarik Black looks to get the first shot at outside “X” receiver. He was in a battle with last year’s returning receiving leader in Brennan Eagles. Black was the more impressive player in camp. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger was impressed with how he approached each and every day with a positive mindset. Black had an up and down career at Michigan but gets a fresh start in Austin. Look for him early on in this contest to establish himself as the starter.
Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich did say during his media availability on Tuesday that they would be going with a wide receiver by committee approach. One should believe that it will be that way all season, more likely that they are using this game to see where all of their weapons on the outside stand. Eagles hasn’t had the best camp according to reports but as we saw last year he can make plays when called upon.
Texas finally gets Joshua Moore back on the field manning the “Z” spot. Moore is a talented receiver that spent most of last year on the suspended list. With that all behind him, Moore and Al’Vonte Woodard look to get the ball rolling early against the Miners.
