Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns jump Oklahoma to claim Big 12’s No. 1 2022 class

With four-star wide receiver Evan Stewart’s commitment, Texas has surpassed Oklahoma as the No. 1 class in the Big 12. .

Texas landed its biggest commitment of the 2022 class late Thursday night in four-star wide receiver Evan Stewart. Head coach Steve Sarkisian quickly recognized the lack of elite speed in the wide receiver room and fixed it by making one of the top in-state prospects a priority.

With the commitment, Texas has surpassed Oklahoma as the No. 1 class in the Big 12 according to 247Sports. On a national scale, the Longhorns are at No. 5 overall and the Sooners are just behind them at No. 6.

Sarkisian and his staff currently have six commitments with five-star quarterback Maalik Murphy leading the way. The No. 1 in-state running back (Jaydon Blue) and two of the top three in-state wide receivers (Stewart and Armani Winfield) follow him. Four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau and three-star inside linebacker Trevell Johnson round out Texas’ current class.

Oklahoma currently has five verbal pledges. Five-star running back/wide receiver Raleek Brown is their top prospect, while Texas natives Kobie McKinzie and Jordan Hudson round out the Sooners’ class.

Despite Texas taking the lead over Oklahoma in mid-February, there is still a long way to go. The two rivals are going to be battling for top players until National Signing Day in December.

The Texas-Oklahoma rivalry is going to be just as intense in the recruiting world as the annual meeting at the Cotton Bowl. All facets of Sarkisian against Lincoln Riley will bring entertainment for years to come.
