Everywhere you turn there is a new rumor or source regarding the status of the Texas Longhorns head coaching position.
With the job status up in the air on Tom Herman, many have speculated that he has seen his last days as the man in charge of the burnt orange football program. It is no secret these days that former Ohio State and Florida National Championship winning coach Urban Meyer is the preferred target. After going with Charlie Strong and Herman since 2014, it appears as though the Texas brass is looking at the big fish.
As they should.
A recent report posted by Orange Bloods and shared on Football Scoop states that the Longhorns were in Colombus to meet with Meyer. It was reported on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that Meyer could be exploring options for a potential staff if he were to take the Longhorns job.
Our guy Broaddus has people telling him that Urban Meyer is exploring putting together a staff to maybe coach you know where.

Bryan Broaddus is now on the radio as part of the afternoon show ‘Gbag Nation’ with Gavin Dawson and Jeff Cavanaugh. Broaddus recently worked on the media side with the Dallas Cowboys. Prior to that role he spent time in the Cowboys front office as well as the Green Bay Packers. His job came on the player personnel side. Broaddus has connections in the college ranks.
One of the holdups on Meyer actually accepting the role outside of health and family, could be just who he would bring with him in Austin. He likely wants to make sure that he has the best assistants around him. So who could be on that staff?
Purely speculation at this point as no one has reported any of these names.
Stan Drayton and Chris Ash are two that would likely be holdovers from the Herman staff. Meyer had both with him at Ohio State when they won the National Championship. This year, Meyer has spoken glowingly about Ash and called him the best coordinator hire of the offseason.
Corey Dennis is one name that comes to mind. Dennis is the son-in-law of Meyer and has developed a relationship with former commit Quinn Ewers. That might be a way that the Longhorns could get back into the race with Ewers, might be a longshot but it would be hard to fathom a staff without him.
Larry Johnson, the defensive line coach. Johnson spent 18 years at Penn State before heading to Ohio State in 2014 with Meyer. He developed both Joey and Nick Bosa as well as Chase Young. He would be a welcomed addition to the staff if Meyer could convince Johnson to join him.
Kerry Coombs, the defensive coordinator. During his time with Meyer, Coombs was the assistant defensive coordinator along with Chris Ash. Given that he has worked with Ash in the past, it could be an option. However, he is the coordinator now so it would be hard to imagine he would leave his position.
This is obviously a developing issue to monitor. Especially given that Urban Meyer is on the Fox Big Noon Kickoff show. This week their Big Noon game is the Texas Longhorns and Kansas State Wildcats.
