The Longhorns have one last chance to get back into the win column and end the season on a high note.
First-year head coach Steve Sarkisian is entering what is considered to be the most crucial offseason of his tenure at Texas. It’s clear that the roster needs improvement at every position outside of running back. Sarkisian’s staff will need to close out the 2022 cycle strong and raid the transfer portal in order to bring in immediate impact players.
In the 31-23 loss to West Virginia last week, several Texas players left the field with significant injuries. Quarterback Hudson Card, who had his best performance to date, suffered a high ankle sprain and will likely not play against Kansas State. Due to his performance, Card would have been the favorite to start in the regular-season finale if he were healthy.
Casey Thompson also went down against the Mountaineers. He appeared to aggravate the thumb injury on his throwing hand, and it’s unclear how healthy he will be for this week. Sarkisian noted that both quarterbacks are considered day-to-day. For just the second time this season, there is an “or” on the depth chart at the quarterback position.
If neither quarterback is able to go, former walk-on Ben Ballard would receive the start.
Wide receiver Jordan Whittington was not listed on the depth chart against West Virginia, but is present this week. Whittington or Kelvontay Dixon will receive the start alongside Xavier Worthy and Marcus Washington.
Outside of those minor changes, the rest of the depth chart looks identical to the West Virginia game.
