Texas Basketball: Charli Collier named to Naismith Trophy watch list

Texas women’s basketball forward Charli Collier has been named to the Naismith Trophy watch list. The award is given to the top player.

The Texas women’s basketball team will be under new leadership as they begin the 2020-21 college basketball season.

Karen Aston was not retained after leading the Longhorns to a 19-11 record overall in 2019-2020. Texas finished third in the conference with a mark of 11-7, they didn’t get to play in the conference tournament due to it being cancelled. Following the season Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte announced they would go in a new direction and hired Vic Schaeffer from Mississippi State.

His top player this year has been named for the top award in college basketball. The junior forward Charli Collier has been named to the Naismith Trophy watchlist for the 2020-21 season.

As a sophomore, Collier averaged 13.1 points per game to go along with 10.5 rebounds. She was a walking double-double for the Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team last season. She should only be more impactful in the upcoming season under Schaeffer.

At Mississippi State, Schaeffer had the top team in the conference for two of the last three seasons. He was the NCAA tournament runner-up twice and finished in the elite eight for the other year. The team averaged almost 80 points per game and average margin of victory was 18.6 points per game.
