It’s been an odd year for the sport of baseball.
For the Longhorns specifically, it’s been an eventful week.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020 college baseball season was cut short while the Major League is still contemplating whether to play at all. In terms of the shortened MLB Draft and the additional year of eligibility on campus, it makes it tough for a player to make a decision regarding their future.
The Longhorns are now receiving some clarity, as many of their questionable players have made their choice on whether to return to Austin or begin their professional careers. While outfielder Austin Todd and first baseman Zach Zubia have announced their returns to Texas for another season, pitcher Bryce Elder and center fielder Duke Ellis will be leaving.
On top of that, right-handed pitcher Kamron Fields has entered the transfer portal. He will be immediately eligible to contribute at another program.
The agency representing Duke Ellis has announced that the UT outfielder has signed as an undrafted free agent with the White Sox. Texas also confirmed today that RHP Kam Fields has entered the transfer portal.

The Longhorns Friday night starter on the mound, Bryce Elder, agreed to a deal with the Atlanta Braves after he was selected in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft. While this was a no-brainer decision in terms of his slot value, he will certainly be missed in Austin.
5th-rder Bryce Elder signs with @Braves for $850k (slot 156 value = $336,600). Texas RHP, one of best sliders in @MLBDraft, also has low-90s sinker, ability to manipulate breaking ball into a curve and effective changeup. High-floor guy. @MLBDraft

Pitchers Ty Madden and Pete Hansen are expected to become starters for Texas in 2021.
