Temple’s Matt Hennessy grew up a Giants fan

Temple center Matt Hennessy grew up a New York Giants fan, and he may end up playing for them after the 2020 NFL Draft.

When the New York Giants enter the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, they may be looking to add a center with pick No. 36 overall. And one potential option in Temple’s Matt Hennessy.

Hennessy has established himself as a likely Round 2 pick and he’s already met with the Giants, having held a virtual meeting with the team last week.

Something that undoubtedly came up during that meeting was Hennessy’s childhood fandom.

Why? Because the New Jersey native grew up bleeding a deep shade of blue.

“I remember going to those games just as Eli was starting to take over. Remember the Super Bowls. Those were two of my best childhood memories. It was fifth and eighth grade,” Hennessy told ESPN. “Went to the stadium both times for the celebration after. Got all the gear. Got to see the [Lombardi] trophy and everything.”

Hennessy jokes that his childhood friends discuss the Giants with him as all normal fans do, but that he now has a unique perspective being on the other side of things.

“Now that I’m back in New York, around all my childhood friends that are Giants fans, they’re super fired up,” Hennessy said. “I haven’t told any of them [about the meetings]. It’s funny. But they’re all talking about the Giants’ draft, and it’s funny being on the other side of it and having these Zoom meetings with the personnel people and coaches.”

It’s far from guaranteed, but the possibility remains that the 6-foot-4, 307-pound center ends up on his favorite team, which would come much to the delight of he, his family and his friends, all of whom firmly belong to Giants Nation.
