8 Panthers players placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Panthers just announced that eight players have been placed on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Panthers just announced that eight players have been placed on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

Here is the list, per the team website.

WR D.J. Moore
WR Curtis Samuel
DT Derrick Brown
DT Zach Kerr
LB Shaq Thompson
OT Greg Little
P Michael Palardy (IR)
WR Ishmael Hyman (PS)

This is a pretty brutal list for an inexperienced team that’s had problems with injuries and COVID-19 all season.

Wide receiver is obviously the major concern, here. If Moore and Samuel are both out it will be an enormous blow to Carolina’s passing game, no matter how impressive Robby Anderson has been this season.

Defensive tackle is another other huge concern. Both Brown and Kerr have played well this season and with Kawann Short out for the year there’s not very much depth left behind them at all. To make matters worse, defensive tackle Bruce Hector is also on the practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list. That’s where wide receiver Ishmael Hyman is headed, as well.

As bad as all this is for the depth chart, right now football is a secondary concern. What matters most is the health and safety of these athletes and their families. We wish all those involved a full recovery and urge everyone to take precautions to do everything they can to avoid catching a virus that has killed almost 300,000 Americans to date.

Panthers Highlights: Jeremy Chinn scores 2 touchdowns in a row

The Panthers now lead 21-10 early in the third quarter.

With their quarterback struggling, the Panthers needed somebody else to step up and make an impact. They just got a pair of them from their standout rookie on the first plays of the second half.

Watch Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins cough up a fumble after taking a hit from defensive tackle Zach Kerr, leading to an easy scoop and score for rookie Jeremy Chinn.

On the very next play, Chinn improbably picked up another fumble – this one by Dalvin Cook – and returned that one for a touchdown, too.

What a turnaround.

Panthers DT Zach Kerr shares his philosophy: ‘Nobody cares, work harder’

Panthers defensive tackle Zach Kerr has become one of the team’s top under-the-radar free agent pickups in 2020.

Panthers defensive tackle Zach Kerr has become one of the team’s top under-the-radar free agent pickups in 2020. Kerr did not play Thursday night against the Falcons due to a toe injury. That said, when he’s been on the field Kerr has performed well, a welcome development especially after another season-ending shoulder injury for star DT Kawann Short.

Kerr has only played 39% of the team’s defensive snaps so far, but he has four quarterback hits and a pass breakup already. This morning, Kerr shared some profound thoughts on Twitter about his process and philosophy. His working mantra seems to be “nobody cares, work harder.”

It may not be a football reference. However, it’s the right frame of mind to have for Kerr and the Panthers going into Week 9. The team has opened as a 12-point underdog against the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Hopefully Kerr will be back in the lineup.

Panthers Week 8 inactives: Zach Kerr, Russell Okung out vs. Falcons

Here are the team’s inactives for tonight’s game.

The Carolina Panthers are once again shorthanded in the trenches heading into their Week 8 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons, with starters on both sides of the line of scrimmage being ruled out.

Here are the team’s inactives for tonight’s game.

OT Russell Okung
DT Zach Kerr
G Mike Horton
DB Sean Chandler
QB Will Grier

Greg Little will start in Okung’s place at left tackle. He performed well last week against the Saints and can build a claim to more playing time with another strong game against Atlanta. Kerr had been taking the place of Kawann Short, who is on injured reserve. The Panthers will now be starting rookie Bravvion Roy next to Derrick Brown.

As for those not listed here, Christian McCaffrey and Yetur Gross-Matos are also on IR and a couple offensive linemen are on the reserve/COVID-19 list as well as cornerback Rasul Douglas.

As for Atlanta, here is their list of inactives.

DE Takk McKinley
RB Ito Smith
DT Marlon Davidson
CB Jordan Miller
OT John Wetzel

Panthers 2020 free agency: Grading the second wave of moves

Here’s our grades for the team’s second wave of moves.

The Carolina Panthers have been one of the most active NFL teams in free agency this year, making stunning trades and scooping up a lot of players on low-cost deals. The first week consisted of mostly bargain shopping. It was a totally different story in week two, though.

Here’s our grades for the team’s second wave of moves.

Signed: QB P.J. Walker

First up, the Panthers signed the best player from the XFL’s short-lived 2020 season. Former Colts quarterback P.J. Walker was the league’s answer to Patrick Mahomes and was the runaway favorite to win their MVP. Signing him gives Carolina a young backup who showed electric potential over those five games, albeit against a lower level of competition. At two years and just $1.565 million, Walker is a steal.

Grade: A

DL Zach Kerr is latest Cardinals free agent to join another team

He joins the Carolina Panthers on a one-year contract.

The Arizona Cardinals now have six free agents who have left to join other teams. The latest is defensive lineman Zach Kerr, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Kerr has agreed to a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers, joining receiver Pharoh Cooper, who also joined the Panthers.

Kerr signed with the Cardinals in October after rookie Zach Allen got hurt. Kerr played in 12 games and started three. He was a solid cog on the defensive line for the Cardinals.

He had 19 tackles and two QB hits.

Kerr enters his seventh NFL season. He played three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, two with the Denver Broncos and one with the Cardinals.

He has played in 75 games and started 12.

So far this offseason, the Cardinals have had free agents Rodney Gunter, Cassius Marsh, Joe Walker, Pharoh Cooper, Damiere Byrd and Kerr leave in free agency. Only Gunter got more than a one-year contract.

Panthers re-sign WR/KR DeAndrew White, add DT Zach Kerr

Panthers re-sign WR DeAndrew White, add DT Zach Kerr.

The Carolina Panthers have announced several moves on their website. First, the signings of Teddy Bridgewater and P.J. Walker are now official. There’s also a couple new items to report.

Wide receiver/kick returner DeAndrew White has been re-signed. White was a preseason standout in 2019, especially the Week 4 game against the Steelers. He played in 10 games during the regular season, mostly on special teams. White caught four passes for 51 yards. He also returned 10 kickoffs, totaling 226 yards. White should be the second kick returner option on the roster behind Pharoh Cooper.

The team also announced the signing of former Cardinals defensive tackle Zach Kerr. After playing his college ball at Delaware, Kerr went undrafted. He spent the first three years of his career with the Colts, followed by two with the Broncos, then one in Arizona.

So far, Kerr has played in 75 games. He’s totaled 7.5 sacks, 18 quarterback hits, 13 tackles for a loss and five pass breakups. Kerr (6-foot-2, 334 pounds) is likely considered the replacement for nose tackle Dontari Poe, who has agreed to terms with the Cowboys.

6 free agents the Cardinals should re-sign for 2020

Some are starters and others are backups.

The Arizona Cardinals have a number of their own players who are scheduled to become free agents, either restricted or unrestricted. They already have re-signed receiver Larry Fitzgerald and left tackle D.J. Humphries.

Who are the players they should re-sign?

RB Kenyan Drake

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals have made it clear they want him back. He was the biggest playmaker on offense outside of Kyler Murray last season. He is asking for a lot. They should bring him back but probably not for more than the suggested three years and $15 million they want to give him.

1 pending free agent Dolphins should target from each NFC West team

The Dolphins will enter 2020 free agency window with 1 of the biggest cap totals in the league. Who should they target from the NFC West?

The Miami Dolphins are all set to enter 2020 free agency next month and continue the team’s ambitious plan to completely overhaul the roster. Yes, this team’s primary objective appears to be to build through the draft. But the Dolphins will have a mass surplus of cap space at their disposal and the environment in South Florida is one filled with optimism after the Dolphins finished 5-4 over their final nine games.

Looking across the NFL landscape, there’s a ton of potential contributors set to hit the market. Here’s one pending free agent from each team in the NFC West that the Dolphins should consider:

San Francisco 49ers – Defensive Lineman Arik Armstead

You’ll be hard pressed to find many better fits for the Dolphins in this free agent class. Armstead is everything the Dolphins dream about on the defensive line — he’s long, he’s powerful, he’s got heavy hands and, most importantly, he really came into his own as a pass rusher in 2019.

During his 5th NFL season, Armstead logged 10 sacks and 18 quarterback hits. In the four prior seasons combined? He totaled 9 sacks and 29 quarterback hits over 46. games.

Granted, the additions of Dee Ford and Nick Bosa plus the presence of DeForest Buckner helped free Armstead up as a pass rusher, but the Dolphins are similarly looking to overhaul their pressure packages. Armstead would be a three down defender for Miami for the long-haul.
