Are the Panthers projected to land any 2025 compensatory picks?

Should the Panthers be expecting some extra help in next year’s draft?

One team’s treasure is another team’s treasure.

With the 2024 NFL draft now in the books, we’re beyond the point of consideration for compensatory free agents. That means the loss of key free agents can no longer be thrown into the formula for 2025 compensatory picks.

So, Over The Cap contributor Nick Korte has cooked up some projections for those selections—and, unsurprisingly, the Carolina Panthers didn’t make the list.

Yeah, that’s typically what happens when you’re the top spenders of the offseason.

What also usually happens is restitution for the teams those top spenders took from. And boy, did the Panthers ever take.

According to Korte, four of Carolina’s free-agent signings should result in compensatory picks elsewhere. Those players, teams and projected rounds for the picks are as follows:

The Panthers kicked off their free-agent escapades by landing both Hunt and Lewis—who signed to a combined $153 million. They’d eventually follow up with two-year deals for Nijman and Clowney—whose pacts can be worth up to $15 million and $24 million, respectively.

Luke Tenuta, Caleb Jones on similar path as Yosh Nijman, can Packers get similar results?

Luke Tenuta and Caleb Jones are on similar developmental paths as Yosh Nijman was on. Now, can the Packers get similar contributions?

Offensive tackles Caleb Jones and Luke Tenuta find themselves on a similar developmental path as Yosh Nijman. Now the Packers are hoping that it leads to similar results.

Tenuta and Jones are about to enter their third seasons with the Packers. Jones was signed as undrafted rookie following the 2022 draft and Tenuta, who was a sixth-round pick by the Bills that same year, was claimed off waivers by the Packers early on in the 2022 season.

Both players were raw prospects coming out of their respective schools, but both possessed elite size and movement skills that the Packers were willing to bet on and take time to develop.

Tenuta and Jones were both on the Packers’ 53-man roster as rookies in what was essentially a red-shirt year for each of them. This past year, Jones filled a similar role at the bottom of the depth chart, while Tenuta’s season never got going after he suffered an ankle injury during the preseason that kept him on IR for much of the year.

However, before being placed on IR, the Packers put him on the initial 53-man roster, which gave Tenuta the opportunity to return to practice later in the year, which he eventually did, although he was never activated. This small detail is just another example of how highly the Packers think of him, as well Jones, who took up a roster spot the entire season.

“He’s big, first of all,” said Brian Gutekunst of Tenuta last summer. “He’s really smart. He’s tough. We think he’s got pretty good upside. You guys know, I’ve talked about this with you before, but especially once you get into the season it’s hard to find big guys who can play, and we think he’s a big guy who can play, so we would like to continue to develop him.”

Tenuta has played seven career snaps, which came in mop-up duty of Week 17 during the 2022 season, while Jones is yet to take the field in a regular season game.

What was just described isn’t all that different from Nijman’s path with the Packers. Nijman, who during the pre-draft process measured in at 6-7, 324 pounds and posted an elite Relative Athletic Score of 9.87, went undrafted in 2019 out of Virginia Tech. He joined the Packers that spring as an undrafted rookie.

Nijman spent 2019 on the Packers’ practice squad and made the roster in 2020, but played only 15 snaps that season. However, it was in Year 3 for him, that he saw his first extensive playing time as the Packers navigated injuries at the tackle position in 2021.

From 2021 to 2023, Nijman would play 1,605 snaps at both right and left tackle, either starting 22 games or being a reliable swing tackle off the bench—a valuable role on any team.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, both Tenuta and Jones are entering their third NFL seasons, and ideally, like Nijman, the Packers will need them to step into larger roles in some sort of capacity given the lack of experienced tackle depth on the roster.

Rasheed Walker will be the likely favorite to start at left tackle to begin the season, but as Matt LaFleur discussed recently at the NFL Owners’ Meetings, Walker still has “a lot of room for improvement.”

My guess is that Walker will have to earn that starting spot during training camp and the preseason, and I’m sure the hope is that Jones and/or Tenuta can provide some competition for Walker, while also showing that either can be counted on as depth to come off the bench if needed.

While that is the hope, assuming that jump from either Tenuta or Jones will take place comes with some risk as well. Brian Gutekunst will likely be proactive and spend one of the team’s five top 100 selections on an offensive tackle, which is a loaded position group in this year’s draft class.

Although Nijman navigated some ups and downs in 2023, the Packers invested time into him and were ultimately rewarded for it, especially when you consider that he was undrafted. They will now be looking for similar results for either Tenuta or Jones, and preferably from both.

Packers lose OT Yosh Nijman to Carolina Panthers

Former Packers OT Yosh Nijman is signing with the Carolina Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers are signing former Green Bay Packers offensive tackle Yosh Nijman, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the deal is for two years, includes $5 million guaranteed, has a $8 million base value and is worth up to $15 million.

The Packers signed Nijman as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech in 2019. He developed on the practice squad before joining the 53-man roster in 2020. Nijman went on to play in 67 career games and made 22 starts across four accrued seasons with the Packers.

Between 2021 and 2022, Nijman made 21 starts at left or right tackle. After returning to the Packers on the restricted tender in 2023, he made just one start — after losing out to both Zach Tom and Rasheed Walker at offensive tackle — and played just over 200 offensive snaps total.

In Carolina, Nijman will get a new opportunity to win a starting job for an offensive line in transition.

According to Pro Football Focus, Nijman gave up two sacks, 10 total pressures and committed two penalties over 139 pass-blocking snaps in 2023. He played 198 snaps at left tackle and 32 at right tackle.

Nijman is the sixth Packers player to be released or sign elsewhere this offseason.

The Packers have lost both Nijman and David Bakhtiari at offensive tackle, and starting guard Jon Runyan Jr. signed with the New York Giants. Expect significant investments to be made along the offensive line during the 2024 draft.

Panthers reportedly agree to terms with former Packers OT Yosh Nijman

The Panthers have reportedly agreed to terms with free-agent OT Yosh Nijman.

The Carolina Panthers continued to build up their trenches on Monday.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the team has agreed to terms with free-agent offensive tackle Yosh Nijman. The 6-foot-7, 314-pounder spent the last five years as a member of the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay inked Nijman as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech in 2019. There, the Orange, N.J. native racked up 32 starts over 45 outings for the Hokies—including 10 starts as a right tackle during his senior campaign.

Since his first NFL game in 2020, Nijman has appeared in all 67 of the Packers’ regular-season contests. He’s totaled 22 starts, with 21 of them coming between the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Nijman has played the majority of his looks from the left tackle position. He has notched 1,001 career snaps on the blindside, 587 at right tackle and two at left guard.

The 28-year-old is now the third offensive lineman the Panthers have added this offseason, joining guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis.

6 Offensive linemen the Vikings could pursue in free agency

The Minnesota Vikings need to fortify their offensive line. These six players could be targets for them when free agency begins.

Offensive line is a position group that has haunted the Minnesota Vikings for some time. What has plagued them has been a series of poor draft picks, rough free agent signings and bad development.

Over the last few years, the Vikings have started to find hits, especially at tackle. Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill are two of the best tackles in the National Football League. On the interior, Ed Ingram is slowly developing and Garrett Bradbury is fine but replaceable.

With the current state of the offensive line, left guard is currently open as are the backup offensive line spots. Who could the Vikings choose to bring in to help fortify the offensive line? One seems like a near certainty at left guard so we focused on rotational guys behind the starters.

Packers restructured OT Yosh Nijman’s contract to create $2.5M in cap space

The Packers added four void years onto Yosh Nijman’s contract, creating $2.5 million in cap space, per ESPN.

The Green Bay Packers added four void years onto the contract of offensive tackle Yosh Nijman last Saturday to create a little over $2.5 million in salary cap space, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Nijman, now a backup offensive tackle for the Packers, was set to count $4.3 million on the cap for the Packers in 2023 before the restructure. He signed a one-year restricted tender this offseason to return to Green Bay.

The four void years added on to his one-year deal allow the Packers to spread out a conversion of base salary to signing bonus over five years on the cap. When Nijman’s deal voids following the 2023 season, the prorated money from the final four years of the deal will accelerate onto the cap in the form of dead money in 2024.

The restructure was done before the start of the regular season so the Packers could create maximum savings in 2023. The amount saved this year will be pushed to the cap in 2024.

Nijman, 27, competed to start at right tackle during training camp but lost the job to Zach Tom. He also fell behind Rasheed Walker as the team’s preferred swing twckle and backup behind left David Bakhtiari.

Nijman started 21 games for the Packers between the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He was on the field for five offensive snaps and seven special teams snaps during the Packers’ Week 1 win over the Bears on Sunday.

Packers offensive coordinator gives honest assessment of OT Yosh Nijman

Adam Stenavich on Yosh Nijman becoming a backup: “Football is a very competitive sport and some guys rise to that competition and some guys don’t.”

Offensive tackle Yosh Nijman started 13 games for the Green Bay Packers last season. To start this season, he’s backing up Zach Tom after losing the competition at right tackle.

Nijman’s starting spot appeared to be in jeopardy after he struggled toward the end of the 2022 season. During Green Bay’s season-ending loss to the Detroit Lions, Nijman allowed two sacks and was eventually benched in favor of Tom, who was a rookie at the time.

Heading into the offseason, the Packers still had faith that Nijman would turn his play around, eventually using a second-round restricted tender to keep him in Green Bay for 2023. Throughout the spring and summer, he was given plenty of opportunities to win his job back but was unable to overtake Tom.

When asked about Nijman on Friday, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich gave a pretty dim answer.

“Right now, he’s a backup tackle for us,” Stenavich said Thursday. “That’s where he’s at and football is a very competitive sport and some guys rise to that competition and some guys don’t, so that’s basically what I have to say about that.”

It was an honest response about a player who had shown a ton of potential early in his career. Stenavich was the offensive line coach when Nijman arrived as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and had a hand in him developing into a reliable starter.

Unfortunately, since the end of last season, Nijman has continued to fall down Green Bay’s depth chart.

Tom will start Week 1 against the Bears at right tackle.

“I think, Zach, right from the start was determined to grab hold of that position,” Stenavich said. “It’s a testament to him and his mindset.”

Nijman was the starting left tackle in place of David Bakhtiari for the first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, by the second game, former seventh-round pick Rasheed Walker had replaced Nijman in the “starting” lineup.

What the future looks like for Nijman and the Packers is unclear. He was once considered a viable trade candidate, but after Stenavich’s latest comments, it’s tough to say if any tackle-needy teams would have any interest. At this point, Green Bay may just want to hold on to him in case of emergency.

Packers place second-round restricted tender on OT Yosh Nijman

The Green Bay Packers placed the second-round restricted free agent tender on offensive tackle Yosh Nijman.

The Green Bay Packers placed the second-round restricted free agent tender on offensive tackle Yosh Nijman, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The second-round tender is valued at a one-year salary of $4,304,000 for the 2023 season. The deadline to place the tender was Wednesday afternoon, or the start of the new league year.

Restricted free agents are players with expiring contracts who have three years of accrued NFL experience.

Nijman can still negotiate with other teams, but if he signs an offer sheet with another team and the Packers do not match, the offering team would have to send the Packers a second-round pick in the 2023 draft.

The tender suggests Nijman is a strong candidate to start at right tackle – opposite David Bakhtiari at left tackle – for the Packers next season.

Nijman, 27, has played in all 34 games and made 21 starts (playing both left and right tackle) over the last two seasons.

Last season, Nijman allowed 28 total pressures (five sacks) and committed 10 penalties over 758 total snaps. He played 200 snaps at left tackle and 555 at right tackle. A switch over to the right side and a late-season shoulder injury created some inconsistency late in the season, and the Packers actually benched Nijman for rookie Zach Tom in the season finale.

The Packers originally signed Nijman as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech in 2019. He played all of 14 snaps during his first two seasons but has emerged as a player the Packers can count on at offensive tackle, a premium position.

The team’s other restricted free agents are tight end Tyler Davis and linebacker Krys Barnes, neither of which is expected to get a tender. Without one, both players would become unrestricted free agents at the start of the new league year on Wednesday afternoon.

12 free-agent OL the Colts could consider in 2023

Taking a look at 12 free-agent offensive line options for the Colts in 2023.

After a tumultuous campaign, the Indianapolis Colts will have their eyes on adding some depth and talent to the offensive line through the free-agent market during the 2023 offseason.

While Bernhard Raimann and Braden Smith are expected to be the starting tackles, adding depth behind them is crucial. The Colts also will be in the market to add a starting-caliber right guard and depth at the interior spots.

We took a look at the following positions for the Colts to consider adding to in free agency:

We shouldn’t expect the Colts to go on a wild spending spree in free agency. It’s not their M.O., and Chris Ballard isn’t working with the same amount of salary-cap space as he’s used to.

Now, it’s time to take a look at the free-agent options along the offensive line for the Colts to consider:
