The UFC is in Southern California this week with a key bantamweight fight atop the card.

UFC on ESPN 41 takes place Saturday at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former bantamweight champion [autotag]Dominick Cruz[/autotag] (24-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] (21-7-1 MMA, 13-6 UFC). Vera is a sizable -250 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Cruz is +190. But it’s not a blowout with our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers, who are siding with Vera at a 7-4 clip.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Nate Landwehr[/autotag] (15-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) meets [autotag]David Onama[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at featherweight. Onama is the biggest favorite on the main card at -320, and he’s a near-unanimous pick from our staff members at 10-1.

The only unanimous pick on the main card is [autotag]Yazmin Jauregui[/autotag] (8-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in her promotional debut against fellow debtante [autotag]Iasmin Lucindo[/autotag] (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Jauregui is more than a 2-1 favorite in the women’s strawweight bout and has an 11-0 shutout in the picks.

The closest fight from a betting perspective is between [autotag]Devin Clark[/autotag] (13-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) and [autotag]Azamat Murzakanov[/autotag] (11-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at light heavyweight. Murzakanov is just a -155 favorite, but he’s a near-unanimous pick at 10-1.

Another near-unanimous choice is [autotag]Ariane Lipski[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) in her women’s flyweight bout against [autotag]Priscila Cachoeira[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 3-4 UFC). Lipski is a -210 favorite and has a 10-1 blowout in the picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Gerald Meerschaert[/autotag] (34-15 MMA, 9-7 UFC) is a heavy underdog at middleweight against [autotag]Bruno Silva[/autotag] (22-7 MMA, 3-1 UFC), who is a 3-1 favorite and has a 10-1 near shutout from our staff members.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Vera (58 percent), Onama (77 percent), Jauregui (84 percent), Murzakanov (79 percent), Lipski (74 percent) and Silva (76 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Yazmin Jauregui predicts fast KO to inspire Mexico at UFC on ESPN 41

Yazmin Jauregui may be young, and early in her MMA career, but she’s not lacking in confidence ahead of her UFC debut in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO – [autotag]Yazmin Jauregui[/autotag] may be young, and early in her MMA career, but she’s not lacking in confidence.

Jauregui (8-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC), a 23-year-old from Mexico and recent Combate Global tournament winner, will make her promotional debut in a women’s strawweight bout against Iasmin Lucindo (13-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on Saturday at UFC on ESPN 41.

And though both fighters are making their UFC debuts, they’ve been placed in a prominent spot on the main card in a featured bout before the co-main and main events. Lucindo, from Brazil, is just 20, so it’s fairly clear the UFC sees the fight as one between two potential future stars in the division.

Jauregui is more than a 2-1 favorite to stay unbeaten, and she thinks she’s got a fast knockout in front of her to kickstart her UFC tenure. That, she said at Wednesday’s media day in San Diego, will help inspire fans in her home country.

Check out Jauregui’s full media day interview in the video above ahead of UFC on ESPN 41 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Matchup Roundup: New UFC and Bellator fights announced in the past week (July 11-17)

All the UFC and Bellator fight announcements that were first reported or confirmed by MMA Junkie in the past week.

MMA fight announcements are hard to follow. With so many outlets and channels available, it’s nearly impossible to organize.

But here at MMA Junkie, we’ve got your back.

Each week, we’ll compile all the newly surfaced fights in one spot. Every Monday, expect a feature listing everything you might have missed from the UFC or Bellator.

Here are the fight announcements that were broken or confirmed by MMA Junkie from July 11-17.

22 fights on our MMA wishlist for 2022: Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 3, Jon Jones, Jorge Masvidal

What are some of your dream matchups for 2022? Here are 22 fights MMA Junkie hopes to see happen in 2022.

Amidst a tumultuous global pandemic there were many grim realities humans had to endure in 2021. One thing was consistently good, however, and that’s combat sports.

Although just five fights of 21 fights from the 2021 MMA wishlist came to fruition, the sport was extremely hot and gave fans many memorable moments. The world leader of MMA – the UFC – had a particularly great year, and that momentum doesn’t seem to be slowing heading into 2022.

It’s not just UFC fights that are taking attention, either. There’s also plenty happening in Bellator, PFL, Eagle FC and many other promotions.

MMA is in a great spot, and with much excitement we present MMA Junkie’s wishlist of 22 fights we’d like to see in 2022.

Yazmin Jauregui eyes Combate Global title: ‘It’s time to face ‘Super Mely”

After winning Combate Global’s one-night tournament, Yazmin Jauregui sets eyes on the strawweight title.

After conquering her biggest professional feat to date, [autotag]Yazmin Jauregui[/autotag] is ready to fight for gold.

The 22-year-old prospect won Combate Global’s women’s strawweight one-night tournament at this past Friday’s “Combate Global: Last Latina Standing” in Miami. Jauregui (8-0) outpointed Stephanie Frausto and scored first-round stoppages over Criszaida Adames and Claire Lopez to win the tournament.

Unbeaten in her MMA career and on a six-fight winning streak under the Combate Global banner, Jauregui wants the next shot at strawweight champion Melissa Martinez, and she’s hoping to get it done in 2021.

“Of course I’d like to fight for the title,” Jauregui told MMA Junkie in her native Spanish. “I think that fight has been long awaited, and I think now it’s time to face ‘Super Mely.’

“She’s a fighter with a ton of experience in kickboxing and with a high level as a martial artist. It would be a challenge for me and an honor to share the cage with her. We both know very well we’d leave everything in there, so it’s a fight many people have been waiting for, and I’m also anxious for it to happen. I want to fight for a title and, God willing, take that belt home.”

Jauregui trains at Tijuana’s Entram Gym under the tutelage of Raul Arvizu and alongside UFC champion Brandon Moreno.

“Combate Global: Last Latina Standing” was the first time Jauregui fought three times in one night in her young career. She said she left the tournament with good experience despite it being very physically demanding.

“I really liked the experience because you compete against three rivals who are totally different in the realm of MMA,” Jauregui explained. “They all fight differently, so that’s what I really liked. But I’m not going to lie to you, there is a bit of pressure and more nerves because you have no idea what’s going to happen.

“But the truth is that I loved it and I enjoyed it. It felt like I was fighting for a title and I took home good victories, which is what I wanted at the end of the day.”
