Yaroslav Amosov sets sights on UFC after Bellator departure: ‘I’ll take this belt’

Former Bellator champion Yaroslav Amosov says the UFC has always been part of the plan – and now it could become a reality.

[autotag]Yaroslav Amosov[/autotag] hopes to claim gold once again, but this time in the UFC.

Approaching one year since his most recent fight, the Ukrainian star Amosov (27-1) is a free agent. His sights are firmly set on the same end location they’ve been for a few years now behind the scenes.

“We have a plan,” Amosov recently told MMA Junkie in his first interview since his Bellator departure. “We want to sign a contract for just one fight (somewhere). After one fight, we want to go to the UFC.”

According to Amosov, the conclusion of his Bellator contract was the result of an expiration of time, not the conclusion of fights. Amosov says he informed the promotion in 2022 or 2023 of his plans to explore free agency and thinks perhaps that’s what led to a delayed exit.

When he withdrew from a bout vs. Michael Page to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war, Amosov said one year was tacked onto the end of his contract – but claims he was not offered additional fights during this time.

“In 2023, one maybe two years ago, we said, ‘Bellator, we have plan. We don’t want to sign new contract. After finishing the contract, we’ll go outside.’ I think that’s maybe why they continued my contract one year. Maybe that’s why. But yes, we have plan to go to the UFC.”

Manager Andriy Spivachuk hinted his client might already know where he’s going next, but elected to not yet publicly announce.

“They promised, but they didn’t give,” Spivachuk said.

Amosov aims for a January 2025 return to action. Renowned for his strong grappling abilities, Amosov thinks he might have to show more exciting aspects of his game to twist the arm of UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby.

That’s why he’s training boxing with WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk (19-0), a fellow countryman.

“I feel I can change my style,” Amosov said. “That’s why I’m an MMA fighter. That’s why I’m an MMA fighter because I can fight in striking, grappling. Now, the last couple months, I trained in boxing. Maybe a couple months ago, I’ve been in boxing camp. Then, maybe now I go to boxing camp again now in Spain. … For me, I think I can grapple and striking. Sometimes, for me, I feel better if I do takedowns and ground-and-pound. Maybe submissions. It’s maybe better for me. I feel it’s, for me, comfortable.”

Despite the result of his last fight, a TKO loss to Jason Jackson in November 2023 that shocked bookmakers, Amosov said he asked for a rematch that he did not receive. Since then, he’s identified the problems that went wrong and is not deterred from UFC title gold aspirations.

“I had in my last fight it was many problems in my camp,” Amosov said. “I had many situations close to my family about my country and I had a couple problems. It’s just my problem and he’s a very hard guy. 100 percent. But my last fight was me, but not me.

“… Of course, I have big motivation because my last fight was not so good. I want to show this world I’m a good fighter and I will be champion. My last fight is my fault. I want to show it’s just a mistake. I show this world this mistake. … I think I can do this. I will do this. Maybe that’s better. I’ve trained with many guys, many years and I feel I can do this. I’ll take this belt.”

Former Bellator champ Yaroslav Amosov announces end of contract, hints at UFC move

Yaroslav Amosov, who is a former Bellator champ and ranked top 15 in the world, is a free agent and could be headed to the UFC.

One of the top welterweights in the world is making an exit from Bellator and looking to start a new chapter in his career.

[autotag]Yaroslav Amosov[/autotag], who saw his remarkable undefeated run come to an end in November 2023 when he lost the Bellator welterweight title to Jason Jackson, revealed Friday his contract with the promotion has concluded.

As a result, Amosov, No. 13 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie welterweight rankings, is seeking “a new beginning” elsewhere.

Check out Amosov’s full statement below (translated by Instagram):

https://www.instagram.com/p/C_2LCXZoRra

Friends, my contract with @bellatormma has ended.

It was an unforgettable 6 years. A time that will be etched in my heart forever. Thank you all 🙏 soon I will announce my next actions! Unforgettable emotions during winning the title, even greater while defending it, the first defeat in 11 years, the war in the homeland… but I’m sure it’s only made me stronger 👊🏼 it’s all a small part of a big story. This is not the finish line, this is a new beginning.

I’m ready for a new phase. New horizons and peaks are ahead. My journey continues, I appreciate everyone who’s been there, those who supported and those who doubted.

The story doesn’t end, it just changes direction.

See you in the octagon 😎

The closing words of Amosov’s statement alludes that a move to the UFC could be on the horizon for the Ukrainian, who has fought just twice since June 2021 due to a hiatus to help fight for his country against Russian invasion.

With focus seemingly back on his fighting career, perhaps Amosov is on the verge of taking his talents to the biggest stage.

In the comments of his Instagram post, American Top Team head coach Mike Brown, Bellator champ Johnny Eblen, as well as the likes of Mateusz Gamrot, Grant Dawson and more posted excitement about Amosov potentially joining the UFC roster.

Bellator 301 results: Jason Jackson shocks previously unbeaten Yaroslav Amosov with brutal KO to win title

Jason Jackson shocked the MMA world and became welterweight champ at Bellator 301 by handing Yaroslav Amosov his first loss in devastating fashion.

[autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag] shocked the MMA world at Bellator 301 and became champion.

Considered by many as a hefty underdog, Jackson (17-4 MMA, 8-1 BMMA) knocked out previously unbeaten [autotag]Yaroslav Amosov[/autotag] (27-1 MMA, 8-1 BMMA) to top off a dominant striking performance in Friday’s main event at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The stoppage came via punches at 2:08  of Round 3.

From the opening bell, Jackson stuffed Amosov’s takedown attempts and established range. Jackson used leg kicks to keep Amosov at bay. His uppercuts and knees threatened Amosov each time he shot for a takedown.

As the fight wore on, Amosov wore down. Jackson remained calm and waited for his moment, which he found in a combination that ended in a hard right hand. Down went Amosov, who tried to survive. Amosov absorbed blows as he got to his feet. A sloppy takedown was once again countered by an uppercut – but this one put him out.

Jackson, who had not competed since July 2022, extended his winning streak to seven. Other notable wins include Douglas Lima, Paul Daley, Benson Henderson, and Neiman Gracie also.

Amosov loses for the first time as a professional. He won the title vs. Douglas Lima in June 2021 and defended it once successfully vs. Logan Storley in February after a split from MMA to serve in the Ukrainian military.

Video: Will Bellator 301 be the promotion’s curtain call?

Will there be a Bellator 302? Our “Spinning Back Clique” breaks down what could be the final event in Bellator 301.

If Bellator 301 is the final event for the promotion, there are some solid matchups to go out on.

The event taking place at Wintrust Arena in Chicago brings a pair of title fights along with a few other intriguing matchups. In the main event, [autotag]Yaroslav Amosov[/autotag] puts his welterweight title on the line against [autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag]. In the co-feature, [autotag]Sergio Pettis[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Patchy Mix[/autotag] in a bantamweight title unification bout.

Also on the card is a heated rivalry matchup between [autotag]Danny Sabatello[/autotag] and former interim bantamweight champ [autotag]Raufeon Stots[/autotag]. Former featherweight champion A.J. McKee also is in action against Sidney Outlaw. Rounding out the main card is a lightweight grand prix semifinal bout between Patricky Freire and Alexander Shabliy.

These are solid matchups on paper, but the event doesn’t seem to have the same buzz around it as the promotion’s previous event. Is it because the promotion’s future beyond this event is uncertain? Will there be a Bellator 302?

Our “Spinning Back Clique” panel of Mike Bohn, Nolan King and Brian “Goze” Garcia answered those questions with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia.

Bellator 301 headliner Yaroslav Amosov on perfection, family and inspiring people in Ukraine

Bellator welterweight champ Yaroslav Amosov is glad to be unbeaten, but it’s only because he loves fighting.

CHICAGO – Some fighters might start to feel the pressure of being unbeaten after six or eight or 10 or a dozen wins out of the gate.

For [autotag]Yaroslav Amosov[/autotag], that number is 27 straight to open his MMA career. That’s a dozen, plus another dozen, and three more after that. In other words, it’s a lot of fights to win in a row at any level, let alone the level that leads to the Bellator welterweight title.

But Amosov said the pressure of 27-0 doesn’t get to him.

[lawrence-related id=2695914,2696016,2695683,2695597]

“(Being undefeated) doesn’t matter,” Amosov told MMA Junkie and other media members at the pre-fight media day for Bellator 301. “I want to fight everyone. Being 27-0 is great, of course, but I just want to fight. If you’re a fighter, you must win every fight. When I go into the cage, I want to win.”

Amosov (27-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) talked his welterweight title fight against challenger Jason Jackson (16-4 MMA, 7-1 BMMA), which headlines Bellator 301, as well as being undefeated, the importance of his family being with him during training camp, and being an inspiration to people in his home country of Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia for more than a year.

Check out Amosov’s full interview in the video above ahead of Bellator 301, which takes place Friday at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Jason Jackson before Bellator 301: Yaroslav Amosov ‘one of the best welterweights on this planet’

For Jason Jackson, his Bellator welterweight title shot was earned not given, and he’s amped for the test in front of him.

For [autotag]Jason Jackson[/autotag], his Bellator welterweight title shot was earned not given.

Jackson (16-4 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) challenges 170-pound champion [autotag]Yaroslav Amosov[/autotag] (27-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) in the main event of Bellator 301 on Nov. 17 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

Jackson has won six straight fights en route to a title shot, including victories over Benson Henderson, Neiman Gracie, Paul Daley, and former champion Douglas Lima. Jackson takes confidence in knowing that he had to fight his way to the top.

“I had to work and earn my title shot and when I go out there, a man who earned his way here is not just going to give it all up,” Jackson told MMA Junkie Radio. “You have to kill me to get it from me because it wasn’t given to me, and I’m not going to take it for granted.

“So, if they think I’m just going to come lay down, I’m definitely getting my hand raised and I’m going to put every single thing into it that I have. I’m dedicated, I’m motivated. I have beaten champions, former champions, former UFC guys, so it just tells you that I belong here. I have earned my way here.”

Jackson knows dethroning Amosov will be a tall order considering the Ukranian fighter has never lost. He rates Amosov amongst the best 170-pounders regardless of promotion.

“Yaroslav is one of the best welterweights on this planet, if not the best welterweight on the planet,” Jackson said. “The record he brings to the table and the skillset, he knows how to win fights. He’s been fighting for a while. He fought a lot of tough guys. So, I will say he’s up there in the rankings.”

Video: Is Bellator champ Yaroslav Amosov the best welterweight in the world?

Bellator welterweight champion Yaroslav Amosov made a triumphant return to MMA last Saturday then made a bold declaration afterward.

[autotag]Yaroslav Amosov[/autotag] made a triumphant return to MMA last Saturday at Bellator 291.

Amosov, who spent nearly 10 months at home fighting in Ukraine’s war against Russia, showed no signs of ring rust and put on a masterclass as he defended his welterweight championship with a unanimous decision against Logan Storley in Dublin.

Afterward, the undefeated Amosov (27-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) declared himself to be the best 170-pound fighter in the world.

“Of course (I’m the best in the world),” Amosov said. “I am here. If a UFC champion wants to fight, come to Bellator. Scott Coker will give the contract, and we’ll make the fight.”

Unfortunately, we know that’s not going to happen, so all we’re left to do is debate: Is Amosov the best welterweight in the world?

That’s what we asked this week’s “Spinning Back Clique” panel of Danny Segura, Matthew Wells and Brian “Goze” Garcia, who weighed in on the topic with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia.

Check out their discussion in the video above and don’t miss this week’s full episode below.
