New York Yankees at Washington Nationals odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s New York Yankees at Washington Nationals sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Yankees (1-1) and Washington Nationals (1-1) close out a season-opening three-game series at Nationals Park. Sunday’s contest is slated for a 1:05 p.m. ET first pitch. We analyze the Yankees-Nationals betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Yankees at Nationals: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Jonathan Loaisiga vs. LHP Patrick Corbin

Loaisiga: 4.55 ERA in 31 2/3 IP

  • The Yankees figure to go through the bullpen in Sunday’s contest with Loaisiga, Chad Green and some combination of Tommy Kahnle, Adam Ottavino and Zack Britton.
  • The fire-balling 25-year-old righty logged a 3.12 ERA over September and October (postseason) last fall. His stuff was also sharp during New York’s summer camp.

Corbin: 3.25 ERA in 202 IP

  • Corbin registered a 3.49 FIP (fielding independent pitching) in 2019. FIP is an ERA-type stat which filters defense, strikeouts, walks and home runs into a league average. The lefty’s performance in this peripheral metric confirms a fine ERA that was mostly for real.
  • The veteran southpaw likes pitching in D.C. Corbin posted a 2.40 ERA at Nationals Park last season. He allowed just 8 home runs over 16 home starts.

Special Betting Line: Bet $1. Win $100! If either the Yankees or Nationals hit a homer, you win. Visit BetMGM to place your legal MLB bet in CO, IN, NJ and WV and for terms and conditions. Bet now!

Yankees at Nationals: Key injuries

The list of MLB injuries includes:

Yankees

  • RP Aroldis Chapman (COVID-19) out

Nationals

  • RP Wander Suero (COVID-19) out
  • OF Juan Soto (COVID-19) out

Moneyline (ML)

Managing games via the relief corps amounted to a mixed bag for the Yanks in 2019. The available arms in this one and the overall upside for Loaisiga make New York a solid play on Sunday. A play on NEW YORK (-121) makes sense.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Yankees pays out an $8.26 profit.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Pair the above with a NEW YORK -1.5 (+120) play to spice up the action. The public may be leaning a bit too hard into a Soto-less Nats offense coming off a big night (nine runs scored Saturday).

Over/Under (O/U)

The game will be played on a hot afternoon in D.C. The weather report calls for a light breeze out to right. The lean here is on the OVER 9.5 (-110).

New York Yankees at Washington Nationals odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s New York Yankees at Washington Nationals sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Yankees (1-0) look to start the season with a second straight win over the Washington Nationals (0-1) at Nationals Park. Saturday’s contest is slated for a 7:15 p.m. ET first pitch. We analyze the Yankees-Nationals MLB betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks and best bets around the matchup.

Yankees at Nationals: Projected starting pitchers

LHP James Paxton vs. RHP Stephen Strasburg

Paxton: 15-6 with a 3.82 ERA over 150 2/3 innings pitched and 29 starts in 2019.

  • The Yankees port-sider clocked an 11.1 strikeouts per nine rate last season.
  • Paxton struggled on the road in 2019 (.814 OPS allowed). But that figure rolled in alongside a .351 batting average on balls in play, and the big lefty has otherwise been a solid road hurler over his career.

Strasburg: 18-6 with a 3.32 ERA over 209 innings and 33 starts in 2019

  • The 6-foot-5 right-hander changed some mechanics and sequencing a year ago. Results were impressive, with an increased ground ball percentage and a lower walk rate. Strasburg logged a 2.96 ERA in the season’s second half.
  • Strasburg does a tremendous job of limiting barreled-up contact. That will be a big key against the big bats in the Yankees lineup.
  • One key matchup: Strasburg vs. OF Giancarlo Stanton, who homered in Thursday’s opener. Stanton owns a robust 1.044 OPS against the Washington hurler.

Listed MLB injuries include:

Yankees

  • RP Aroldis Chapman (COVID-19) out
  • 2B DJ LeMahieu (COVID) questionable

Nationals

  • RP Wander Suero (COVID-19) out
  • OF Juan Soto (COVID) out

Yankees at Nationals: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 10:55 a.m. ET.

Moneyline (ML)

New York (-128) took Thursday’s opener, 4-1, in a rain-shortened affair. This line feels like an overreaction to the Soto’s absence and an overreach on Paxton. TAKE WASHINGTON (+115).

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Nationals returns $11.50.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

WASHINGTON +1.5 (-143) is a play with less value than the straight moneyline, and this contest has a lower-scoring lean to it. Skip this play.

Over/Under (O/U)

Pitchers have appeared to be ahead of hitters in the early going. TAKE THE UNDER 9.0 (-110) here.

  1. Braves vs Mets | 16:10 horas ESTE
  2. Tigers vs Reds | 18:10 horas ESTE
  3. Blue Jays vs Rays | 18:40 horas ESTE
  4. Marlins vs Phillies | 18:05 horas ESTE

2020 MLB Futures Odds: How many games will the New York Yankees win?

Looking at 2020 MLB futures odds for how many games the New York Yankees will win in the 60-game MLB season.

How many games will the New York Yankees win in the 60-game 2020 MLB season? We look at the Yankees’ MLB futures odds, including their projected 2020 win total and Over/Under odds at BetMGM, and make our best bet.

New York Yankees 2019 recap

The 2019 Yankees played .636 baseball, going 103-59 en route to capturing the American League East flag by seven games (over the Tampa Bay Rays). The Bronx Bombers were the No. 2 seed in the AL Playoffs, eventually losing in a six-game AL Championship Series against the top-seeded Houston Astros. New York averaged an MLB-best 5.8 runs per game while allowing 4.56 runs per game.

Looking at some notable splits, the Yankees went 32-16 in games decided by five or more runs … 18-19 in one-run games … 38-22 over their first 60 games and 54-22 against AL East foes. The Over went 88-77-6 in Yankees games; that figure was buoyed by a 48-31-4 O/U record on the road.

New York Yankees offseason

New York lost reliever Dellin Betances to the New York Mets in free agency and starter CC Sabathia retired. Also gone are SS Didi Gregorius and DH Edwin Encarnacion.

The biggest plus on the addition side is right-handed starter Gerrit Cole, who will anchor a rotation with question marks and without RHP Luis Severino (Tommy John surgery). Other welcome “additions” would be healthy returns to action by the likes of OF Aaron Hicks (59 games in 2019), OF Giancarlo Stanton (18), OF Aaron Judge (102), and 1B Luke Voit (118).

New York Yankees 2020 schedule

The Yankees are slated to play in an all-East regional format, with the team playing each AL East foe 10 times — for a total of 40 games — and the remaining 20 games coming against NL East opponents. Looking at last year’s 54-22 divisional mark and taking away what were some lackluster trips to the Midwest and West Coast, the abbreviated “COVID-19 schedule” seems to set up well for New York.

How many games will the New York Yankees win in 2020?

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday, July 1 at 10:15 a.m. ET.

The Yankees O/U win total is tabbed at 37.5 with both the Over and Under carrying -110 odds. There isn’t a ton of upside value in the OVER play, but there’s enough there to include New York in a parlay of 4-5 teams.

New York Yankees World Series odds

New York is tabbed at +400 to win the Series. That’s a solid play for an organization with a ton of depth in a year where the 26th man (and perhaps the 46th man) will come into play more than any other.

New York Yankees playoff odds

The Yankees are listed at -323 to win the AL East. The win total and World Series odds have better value.

The Athletic in Love/Hate Relationship with Notre Dame Alternate Uniform

The Athletic listed several alternate college football uniforms that they both love and hate. Notre Dame had one get both love and hate.

The Athletic has been on a uniform kick lately.  In the NHL they’ve been discussing the best sweaters in the history of each franchise and tackled recent alternate college football uniforms today.

Notre Dame has been wearing an alternate look at least once a season each of the last ten years and a couple times wearing a second alternate look twice in the same year.

Notre Dame didn’t get any love from The Athletic today for any of their alternate uniforms.  At least not none that was categorized under “favorites” on the list.  Notre Dame did get listed under “hated” for one of their alternates, however and I assume you already know which recent alternate it went to.

Mandatory Credit: Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Pete Sampson and Nicole Auerbach said the following about the uniforms from the 2018 Shamrock Series game against Syracuse at Yankee Stadium:

Against:  These were less alternate jerseys than Halloween costumes, a Notre Dame football player trick-or-treating around the Bronx dressed up like a New York Yankee.  Most of Notre Dame’s alternates for the Shamrock Series have been edgy with some homage: military green for the game against Army, or touches of the Golden Dome on fabric for the Purdue game.  Even the Knute Rockne jerseys (faux old-school leather cleats!) from 2017 leaned into something Notre Dame.  Dressing up like a baseball player did none of that.  And replacing Notre Dame’s iconic gold with a dingy batting helmet?  Just thinking about it makes me clutch my pearls. – Pete Sampson

For:  Yes, I am aware that most of you hated these.  But that doesn’t mean you are right.  These jerseys paid homage to the most successful professional sports franchise in the United States on said franchise’s own turf.  They mixed elements of traditional baseball and football designs beautifully, from the pinstripes on the pants that looked classic and clean to the matte helmet that looked like a batting helmet.  I believe the backlash to these uniforms was not about the uniforms themselves but rather the success of the Yankees.  Just because you personally didn’t have the honor of growing up a Yankees fan doesn’t mean you have to disrespect the pinstripes.  They’re iconic, much like Notre Dame’s gold helmets.  You’re all just haters. – Nicole Auerbach

And people wonder why the Yankees get so much hate even if they’re not in the business of winning the World Series anymore.

I looked over all of the semi-recent Notre Dame alternates back in the fall ahead of the Irish wearing the ’88 tribute throwbacks against Boston College.  I agree with Sampson in that it wasn’t overall a good uniform but I did think they looked a ton better when the game actually came around than when they were unveiled during the previous summer.

Mandatory Credit: Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

That said there is no excuse for the Rockne tribute uniforms to not get some praise in the “love” category.  Those are as perfect of alternate uniform that Notre Dame has ever worn and whenever they wear them again won’t be soon enough in my eyes.
