Countdown to Kickoff: Mason Tipton is the Saints Player of Day 84

Countdown to Kickoff: Rookie wide receiver Mason Tipton is the New Orleans Saints Player of Day 84. What must he do to make the team?

With now 84 days left until the New Orleans Saints’ regular season opener against the Carolina Panthers, we continue our countdown of players with the corresponding jersey number. Today’s player is undrafted free agent wide receiver Mason Tipton.

The history behind No. 84 brings some notable names to mind especially at the wide receiver position. The most glorified Saint to ever where the number is none other than LSU’s product Eric Martin, who is currently second in team history in career receptions and yards. Other notable players to wear this number are wide receiver Kenny Stills and wide receiver/returner Michael Lewis.

With Tipton being today’s player, let’s take a deep dive into his background and what he can potentially bring to the team.

  • Name (Age): Mason Tipton (23)
  • Position: Wide receiver
  • Height, weight: 5-foot-11, 191 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 8.03
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $798,333
  • College: Yale
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2024 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: Rookie

Tipton went to Archbishop Hoban High School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. In football, Tipton won three state titles. During his senior year, he was named to both the first team all-league and the first team all-region. Tipton would play four football seasons during his five years at Yale (2020 saw no action due to COVID). Over his career, Tipton ranked third in school history with 19 touchdowns received, fifth with 132 receptions, and sixth with 2,067 yards. In addition, he was chosen for All-Ivy three times.

Tipton is a long shot to make the roster at the receiver position with the top four spots already secured for this season. His best bet is to find a way in a special teams role, an interesting spot would be as a returner. Tipton ran a 4.33 40 yard dash at his pro day which indicates he does have the electrifying speed that one would want at that position. He does have some competition though probably even more so than he would have in the past with the new kickoff rule. Guys like Rashid Shaheed, Taysom Hill, Cedric Wilson Jr., Jermaine Jackson are all players that could potentially find themselves in this role. Tipton would have to make some hay during training camp and even more so in the preseason to claw his way into a spot on this team.

Commanders season opener in 35 days: Washington’s best No. 35

35 Martin Mayhew days until the Commanders open the 2023 NFL season.

Commanders Wire continues a countdown to the Commanders season opener for 2023 in 35 days. Who was Washington’s best player wearing number 35?

Keith Griffin (1984-88) was drafted by Washington 279th overall in the 1984 NFL draft. The former Miami Hurricane running back was a member of the 1983 national championship Miami team. Even more, he was known to be the younger of three brothers who all played in the NFL (Archie, Ray, Keith). Keith spent most of his time on special teams, but he was part of the 1987 Super Bowl championship team and had a five-year NFL career with Washington.

Calvin Hill (1976-77) came to Washington in 1976 after being a star running back for the Dallas Cowboys (1969-74), where he was a Pro Bowler four seasons and All-Pro once. George Allen brought Hill to Washington as a free agent and then strangely used him too little in both of his seasons in Washington. So, Hill went to Cleveland (1978-81) and was an effective receiver out of the backfield.

Martin Mayhew (1989-92) came to Washington in 1989 as a free agent from the Buffalo Bills. He beat out Brian Davis to play the opposite cornerback of Darrell Green. The two speedsters proved to be a tough, effective duo for the Redskins. In his four Washington seasons, Mayhew started 48 games, intercepted 13 passes, returning one for a touchdown. He also recovered two fumbles and was credited with being in on 321 tackles. Mayhew started on the 1991 Super Bowl championship team, intercepting one pass against the Falcons in a 24-7 playoff win. Mayhew was the GM of the Detroit Lions (2008-2015) and has served as the Washington GM beginning in 2021.

Former Badger quarterback chooses new school

After he joined the Badgers as a walk-on last year, Marshall Howe entered the transfer portal in May. He has now announced the next school.

After he joined the Badgers as a walk-on for the 2022 college football season, Marshall Howe entered the transfer portal in May. He has now announced the next school he will be playing for, joining the Yale Bulldogs ahead of the 2023 campaign.

Howe worked as the third-string quarterback behind transfer quarterbacks Tanner Mordecai (SMU) and Braedyn Locke (Mississippi State) this spring, but he ultimately decided that leaving Madison was best.

Coming out of Avon, Connecticut, Howe was a two-star recruit received two Division 1 offers from Davidson and Eastern Illinois, though Yale was also connected to him.

It’s unclear if he’s set to compete for the starting job or not, but he’ll always be considered a Badger.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UConn vs Yale Game Preview

Why Yale Will Win

Yeah, head coach Lou Spanos and a few assistant coaches, but things really aren’t going well if you lose to UMass 27-13.

Yale is only 2-2 with a few tight losses, but it’s got the best D in the FCS at coming up with third down stops, and UConn is only converting at a 26% clip. The offensive line is excellent in pass protection for an attack that doesn’t turn the ball over.

UConn’s offensive line can’t get the ground game going for an O that’s given the ball away 13 times so far.

Why UConn Will Win

The Huskies have been knocking on that door.

They pushed Wyoming, they lost in a heartbreaker to Vanderbilt, and it all looked like it was about to kick in when the Covid problems hit the coaching staff and the team was an inexplicable -3 in turnover margin against UMass.

For all of the great things the Yale defense does, it doesn’t force takeaways. The offensive side doesn’t have a ton of downfield pop – it’s not great on third downs – and the UConn D should …

What’s Going To Happen

The UConn D is going to have problems.

Yale’s offense should be able to run well enough to control the game from the start as the Huskies suffer yet another tough, close loss with several missed opportunities being the storyline.

For the seventh time in eight games this year, UConn will fail to hit 300 yards of total offense.
