Who is John Poulakidas? Get to know the Yale star who dropped 28 in an upset of No. 4 Auburn

Meet your latest March hero

On Thursday night it was Jack Gohlke writing his name into March Madness lore during No. 14 Oakland’s upset of No. 3 Kentucky.

On Friday it was Yale’s John Poulakidas etching his name into history as the Bulldogs junior led the way with 28 points in a stunning 78-76 upset against No. 4 Auburn.

Poulakidas was 10-15 from the field (6-9 from three) with two rebounds and two assists and the game’s leading scorer. If you didn’t know his name before Friday, you certainly do now.

Here’s what else you should know about the guard:

  • He averaged 13.1 points during the regular season while shooting 44.3 percent from the field.
  • From Naperville, Illinois
  • Poulakidas is the Neuqua Valley High School’s all-time leading scorer with more than 1,300 points and once scored 49 in a double-overtime victory.
  • A 3-star recruit, Poulakidas chose Yale over TCU, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Princeton, Minnesota, Butler and Saint Louis.

Now he’s a March legend and certainly won’t be forgotten around Connecticut — or Alabama — anytime soon.

Yale transfer QB picks up scholarship offer from Florida Gators

Billy Napier is looking to add some depth to his quarterback room in Gainesville, so Florida offered former Yale quarterback Aidan Warner.

The future of the quarterback position in Gainesville seems fairly clear with Graham Mertz returning and DJ Lagway joining the team in 2024, but Florida head coach Billy Napier is still looking to add some depth to his quarterback room through the transfer portal.

The latest player to pick up an offer is former Yale Bulldog [autotag]Aidan Warner[/autotag], who played high school ball at Winter Park High outside of Orlando. Warner announced the Florida offer on Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

So far, the Miami Hurricanes and Minnesota Golden Gophers are the only other teams that have offered, but the list could grow soon.

Coming out of high school, 247Sports ranked Warner No. 2,008 nationally and No. 116 among quarterbacks in the class of 2023.

He still has all four years of eligibility remaining after redshirting in 2023. Florida could use a developmental piece to add to the stable behind Lagway, Mertz and Jack Miller III.

Max Brown transferred out to Charlotte this offseason and Micah Leon is out of legibility. Walk-on Parker Leis is also on the roster.

Florida basketball coaches meet with Yale transfer target

Florida basketball coaches met with Yale forward EJ Jarvis recently as the staff continues to look at options in the transfer portal.

Florida basketball coaches met with Yale forward [autotag]EJ Jarvis[/autotag] during an in-home visit, according to a Wednesday report from 247Sports.

Jarvis entered the transfer portal a week ago and is shaping up to be one of the targets Todd Golden’s staff is most interested in. Golden and Co. have a big task ahead of them as they attempt to replace most of the frontcourt from a season ago. [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] will still be around, but [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag], [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag] and [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag] are all leaving the team.

There are plenty of minutes up for grabs at UF right now, and Jarvis has shown that he has the stuff to excel at the Ivy League level. He averaged 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. At 6-foot-8 inches tall, Jarvis isn’t afraid to let fly from deep. He shot 40.6% on 32 three-point attempts a season ago.

Despite his impressive numbers, Jarvis didn’t play a ton for Yale last season. He played in just over 55% of the team’s minutes, so this isn’t a 36-minute-a-night kind of guy. That might work well with Todd Golden’s system and allow some flexibility with other potential incoming transfers.

The Gators have also been linked to St. Francis forward [autotag]Josh Cohen[/autotag] and Bradley forward [autotag]Rienk Mast[/autotag].

Jarvis was just a three-star recruit coming out of high school and ranked No. 497 overall in the class of 2019. He now has offers to play in the SEC and other Power Five programs.

Butler’s adorable mascot dog road trip included visits with some similarly very good mascot pups

This is the best road trip with the best dogs.

Butler University’s live mascot, Blue IV, is on the road trip of his young pup life.

Thanks to men’s basketball games against Georgetown, Villanova, and UConn, Butler Blue hopped a flight from Indianapolis to the east coast for an adventure. Aptly dubbed the “Big Dawg Tour,” this trip serves multiple purposes.

First, there’s basketball! The obvious benefit is having a super cute dog mascot on hand for the men’s games, but it also serves to introduce Butler University to more regions and to connect alumni and future Bulldogs to their school.

“Big Dawgs Tour began during the 2013-14 season when Butler joined the Atlantic 10 as a way to introduce the university to new markets,” Blue’s handler Evan Krauss told For the Win.

Krauss — who arguably has the best job in the country — and Blue manage to do all of that, while also creating the most amazing social media content. They added a few bonus stops to meet both in-and-out-of-conference dog friends and pose with dog statues, in front of major monuments and more.
Blue met a grand total of three very good dogs, thanks in part to the robust live handler network. The handlers meet frequently over Zoom and met in person in 2018 when Colorado hosted the first live mascot conference in Boulder.
Let’s take a look at Blue IV’s journey.
