Colts vs. Titans: Initial injury report for Week 2

Here’s a look at the initial injury report for the Colts and Titans in Week 3.

The Indianapolis Colts (0-2) and Tennessee Titans (1-1) released their initial injury reports on Wednesday ahead of the Week 3 matchup at Nissan Stadium.

The big name to watch for the Colts is quarterback Carson Wentz, who didn’t practice on Wednesday and it isn’t clear when he will return. The Colts are considering him day-to-day as they further evaluate the to ankle sprains he suffered during the Week 2 loss against the Los Angeles Rams.

Here’s a look at the injury report on Wednesday for the Colts:

*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Player Injury Wed. (9/22) Thur. (9/23) Fri. (9/24) Status
LB Jordan Glasgow Concussion DNP
WR Zach Pascal Illness DNP
CB Xavier Rhodes Calf DNP
T Braden Smith Foot/Thumb DNP
QB Carson Wentz Ankles DNP
WR Parris Campbell Abdomen LP
S Julian Blackmon Shoulder FP

Glasgow was placed in the concussion protocol following the Week 2 loss against the Rams. Rhodes hasn’t practiced at all since the regular season started, and it appears Smith is now dealing with a thumb injury along with the foot injury that kept him out in Week 2.

It should be noted that linebacker Darius Leonard, left guard Quenton Nelson and left tackle Eric Fisher were all taken off the injury report so it appears they are all full-go until noted otherwise. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they get a rest day on Friday, but that’s encouraging news.

Colts vs. Rams: Inactive players for Week 2

Here are the inactive players for the Colts and Rams in Week 2.

The Indianapolis Colts (0-1) and Los Angeles Rams (1-0) have released the lists of inactive players for the Week 2 matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.

The Colts had two players ruled out on their final injury report in the form of right tackle Braden Smith and cornerback Xavier Rhodes. They also had seven players listed as questionable for their second home game of the season.

Here are the inactive players for the Colts in Week 2:

Name Position Injury
Xavier Rhodes CB Calf
Braden Smith OT Ankle
Parris Campbell WR Abdomen
Isaac Rochell DE
Chris Williams DT
Will Fries G

Campbell is the only player that was listed as questionable on the final injury that won’t be active on Sunday. He popped up on Friday’s report with an abdomen injury, and it isn’t clear how severe the injury is.

As expected, the Colts have left tackle Eric Fisher active for the first time this season. He’s been working back from an Achilles tear in January. Fisher missed the offseason workouts, training camp, the preseason and the Week 1 opener but finally makes his debut.

Left guard Quenton Nelson, defensive end Kwity Paye, safety Khari Willis, safety Julian Blackmon and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. are all active despite being listed as questionable on the final injury report.

Colts rule out RT Braden Smith, CB Xavier Rhodes vs. Rams

The Colts ruled out RT Braden Smith and CB Xavier Rhodes for Week 2.

The Indianapolis Colts ruled out right tackle Braden Smith and cornerback Xavier Rhodes ahead of the Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

Colts head coach Frank Reich told reporters Friday that Smith and Rhodes won’t be available for Sunday’s game after not practicing all week. Smith suffered a foot injury during the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks while Rhodes hasn’t been able to practice since the regular season started.

Losing Smith is a big loss for the offensive line. Even though he allowed six pressures in Week 1, according to Pro Football Focus, Smith is a key part of the offensive line on the right side and has been since he took over a the starter in 2018 as a rookie.

With Smith out, the Colts will have to make some adjustments dealing with pressure from a stout Rams front, and it is likely to be Matt Pryor who steps in at right tackle.

Rhodes misses his second game in a row dealing with a calf injury. It isn’t clear when he’ll be able to return. Third-year cornerback Rock Ya-Sin is expected to take his place on the outside.

Colts vs. Seahawks: Inactive players for Week 1

Inactive players for the Colts and Seahawks in Week 1.

The Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks have released their lists of inactive players for the Week 1 matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.

The Colts had already ruled out three players entering the weekend, two of which would be starters at their respective positions if healthy. The Seahawks had no injury designations on the final report entering the weekend so most of their inactive players can be assumed as healthy scratches.

Here are the inactive players for the Colts in Week 1:

Name Position Injury
Xavier Rhodes CB Calf
Eric Fisher OT Achilles
Kemoko Turay DE Groin
Danny Pinter G Foot
Isaac Rochell DE
Chris Wilcox CB
Will Fries G

Filling in for Rhodes will be third-year cornerback Rock Ya-Sin, who needs to show he can play with more consistency. He gets a tough matchup with the duo of D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

Fisher could be returning from Achilles rehab as soon as Week 2, but that’s still up in the air at this point. He will be watching Julién Davenport settle in at left tackle against a front that will feature plenty of exotic blitzes.

Turay figured to work in the pass-rush rotation as a sub-package rusher on third downs. This is likely to lead to more snaps for Ben Banogu.

Here’s a look at the inactive players for the Seahawks in Week 1 (to be updated):

Seahawks vs. Colts: 4 key matchups to watch in Week 1

Here are four key matchups we will be watching Sunday afternoon.

The Seattle Seahawks visit the Indianapolis Colts tomorrow in their first game of the 2021 NFL season. Both teams made the playoffs last year, so this should make for some quality competition to get the season started.

Here are four key matchups we will be watching Sunday afternoon.

Colts rule out Xavier Rhodes, Eric Fisher in Week 1 vs. Seahawks

Colts rule out CB Xavier Rhodes, LT Eric Fisher and DE Kemoko Turay in Week 1.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich ruled out three players ahead of the Week 1 season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

Those three players include cornerback Xavier Rhodes (calf), left tackle Eric Fisher (Achilles) and defensive end Kemoko Turay (groin).

These don’t really come as a surprise for the Colts entering the weekend. Fisher was activated for the first time this week and while he was a limited participant in practice, the Colts probably want to see him log a few full practices before throwing him into the fire.

Rhodes popped up on the injury report Wednesday and wasn’t able to practice at all. Taking his place on the outside will be Rock Ya-Sin.

Turay was a limited participant on Wednesday but was downgraded as the week progressed. Taking his place as a sub-package pass rusher will be Ben Banogu.

The Colts will release their full injury report with designations later on Friday so we will get the updated status for everyone then.

NFL Week 1: Initial injury report for Colts vs. Seahawks

Taking a look at Wednesday’s injury report for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts released the first injury report of the week on Wednesday as they prepare to host the Seattle Seahawks for the regular-season opener at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Since we are now entering Week 1, the Colts are required to submit an injury report to the league. There was some encouraging news with quarterback Carson Wentz, who was a full participant on Wednesday and is expected to play in the opener against the Seahawks.

Here’s a look at the initial injury report following Wednesday’s practice:

*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Player Injury Wed. (9/8) Thur. (9/9) Fri. (9/10) Status
G Quenton Nelson Foot/Back DNP
CB Xavier Rhodes Calf DNP
WR Parris Campbell Achilles LP
T Eric Fisher Achilles LP
G Danny Pinter Foot LP
DE Kemoko Turay Groin LP
QB Carson Wentz Foot FP

There is still hope that Nelson suits up on Sunday but his status and the status of Rhodes are certainly ones to monitor as the week progresses.

A surprising addition to the injury report on Wednesday was that of Campbell, who popped up with an Achilles injury. Stephen Holder of The Athletic reported it is “lingering soreness” but it will certainly still be something to keep an eye on.

With T.Y. Hilton on the injured reserve list, Campbell stands to see a solid target share so it will be interesting to see if this will be an issue throughout the week.

Colts activate 3 players from COVID-19 list among slew of roster moves

The Colts made a slew of roster moves, including the activation of 3 players from the COVID-19 list.

The Indianapolis Colts activated three players from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Friday.

The three players who remained on the list were cornerback Xavier Rhodes, defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad and offensive tackle Julién Davenport.

Rhodes and Muhammad were among the first players to be placed on the reserve list when camp opened in late July. They haven’t logged a practice to date. Davenport was put on the list a day or two after practice started at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

The Colts no longer have any players on the reserve/COVID-19 list as it stands.

Rhodes should be put right back in as CB1 on the boundary while Muhammad will have to compete in the defensive end room, which won’t be as easy with Ben Banogu and others showing out. Davenport is likely to join the left tackle competition alongside Will Holden and Sam Tevi.

The Colts also announced Friday that they placed wide receiver J.J. Nelson on the injured reserve list, and they waived safety Rolan Milligan and quarterback Jalen Morton.

Colts’ Xavier Rhodes was a menace in coverage in 2020

Rhodes had the best CROE in 2020.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Xavier Rhodes was hoping to bounce back from a down year when he joined his new team in 2020. He did that and more in the secondary for the Colts.

Rhodes looked more like himself while leading the way in the secondary on the boundary for the Colts, and he proved to be a menace at the catch point, recording the best catch rate over expected (CROE) among cornerbacks, per Next Gen Stats.

CROE is defined as “The difference between a defender’s actual completion percentage allowed and expected completion percentage when the defender is targeted as the nearest defender.”

Rhodes was a big reason the Colts defense was able to do what it did in 2020. With questions about the depth behind him and Kenny Moore, it’s encouraging to see that they will have at least two of their starters ready to go for 2021.

This is after the Colts re-signed Rhodes to a one-year deal in free agency this offseason.

Though he did give up five touchdown passes, he only allowed a completion rate of 51.9% in coverage, giving up just 42 completions on 81 targets. He also allowed just a 78.3 passer rating, per Pro Football Focus.

There are a lot of question marks with the depth in the cornerback room, but they should have some stability when it comes to the top of the depth chart as Rhodes looks to continue his strong play on the boundary.

Xavier Rhodes happy to be back with Colts

The Rhodes will be closed in Indy for at least one more year.

The Indianapolis Colts were able to bring back a key piece of their secondary from the 2020 season when cornerback Xavier Rhodes returned on a one-year deal in free agency.

After testing the market, Rhodes wound up re-signing with the Colts on a deal much cheaper than most expected for the 30-year-old. But the veteran is back wearing the horseshoe for at least another year, and he’s happy with the end result of the process.

“I mean yeah I’m happy with the end result. I’m a Colt. I played well with the Colts. I got along with the players and the coaches at the same time so it was a great bond with us,” Rhodes told the media Thursday. “How I was able to see the potential of the team and how I was able to change the camaraderie, change everything from previous – see how like I said, how much potential this team has, to come back to it and try and strive to go to the Super Bowl again. I know we have the potential to do so. I was more than glad and happy to come back.”

After a rough 2019 season that dealt with injuries and inconsistent play, Rhodes bounced back in a major way for the Colts. He emerged as their top boundary corner. On 80 targets, Rhodes allowed a 51.9% completion rate and a 78.3 passer rating, per Pro Football Focus.

With some question marks about Rock Ya-Sin’s ability to be the CB1 in the defense, Rhodes stepped in wonderfully in that role. He feels the scheme best allows him to be himself and work within his own skillset.

“They just allow me to play my ball. Like I’ve said and like I’ve known before, I’ve been in the league eight years, I’ve played almost everything,” Rhodes said. “It was just that they allowed me to be confident within myself, play myself, play football, be free and be myself – allowing me to just be confident and be strong.”

The Colts are likely to add another cornerback in the draft to compete behind Rhodes and Kenny Moore while the team hopes to get more development from young cornerbacks like Ya-Sin, Marvell Tell and Isaiah Rodgers.

At his age and current standing in his career, Rhodes is happy to embrace the leadership and mentor role in the secondary.

“Yeah, being around guys like Terence Newman and guys that actually helped me be the player that I am now, I was able to bring that knowledge to the guys at the Colts,” Rhodes said. “So it was fun helping these guys become – reach their full potential or trying to reach their full potential and come back another year and get them to be one of the best in the league. It feels good to be that leader.”

There are some question marks when it comes to the Colts defense in terms of the pass rush but getting Rhodes back, even on a one-year deal, is a big move for the secondary.
