Michigan State basketball dominates second half for win over Oakland

Michigan State basketball uses strong second half to knock off Oakland on Tuesday night in Detroit

Michigan State used a big second half to remain perfect all-time against in-state rival Oakland on Tuesday night.

The Spartans turned a narrow halftime lead into a convincing victory over Oakland, topping the Grizzlies by the final score of 77-58 from the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The Spartans used multiple big runs to pull away in the second half for the win.

The first half was tight throughout with neither team being able to build a lead bigger than six points in the opening frame. Oakland shot way above its average from deep in the first half, which helped keep the Grizzlies within the game. When it was all said and done, Michigan State held a 31-30 lead going into the break.

Michigan State jumped on the Grizzlies to open the second half, with a 10-1 run to build a double-digit lead. Oakland would respond and get the Spartans lead back to one possession, but from that point on it was all Michigan State.

The Spartans were led in scoring by Xavier Booker, who scored 18 points off the bench. He played especially well in the second half to help Michigan State pull away from the Grizzlies. Jaden Akins (16 points) and Jaxon Kohler (14 points) also reached double-digits in scoring on the night. Kohler recorded yet another double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds for the Spartans.

With the win, Michigan State improves to 9-2 overall on the year.

Tom Izzo, Xavier Booker, and Jase Richardson addressed the media after the MSU vs. Northern Michigan preseason game

Michigan State basketball won a basketball game yesterday. The Spartans beat a scrappy Northern Michigan team 70-53 in Tom Izzo’s big return game in the Superior Dome in what was an amazing college basketball atmosphere for a preseason game.

After the game, we got to hear from Izzo, but we also heard from star sophomore Xavier Booker, and, interestingly, incoming freshman Jase Richardson. Booker and Richardson talked about their experience touring their coach’s old stomping grounds, how they are feeling heading into the season, and more.

Michigan State basketball opened its trip to Spain with a thrilling victory over the Madrid All-Stars on Thursday

Michigan State basketball opened its trip to Spain with a thrilling victory over the Madrid All-Stars.

The Spartans led most of the game but needed strong play from point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. in the final minutes to hold off a comeback attempt by the Madrid All-Stars. The final score was 94-87.

Michigan State led most of the first half, thanks to strong play from Xavier Booker. He hit several 3-point shots to lead the Spartans offensively in the opening frame, helping Michigan State hold a 49-40 advantage at the break.

The Madrid All-Stars responded in the third quarter, outscoring the Spartans by double-digits in the frame to take a 69-67 lead into the final quarter.

Michigan State didn’t let the Madrid All-Stars lead last for long in the fourth quarter. The Spartans quickly regained the lead and held on late for the victory.

MSU’s Xavier Booker tells Lansing State Journal he’s ready to do ‘big things’ this year

If Xavier Booker can take a big step in his game this upcoming season, MSU has the potential to be very good

If Xavier Booker can take a big step in his game this upcoming season, Michigan State has the potential to be very good.

Booker has been impressing many this offseason, and he is “capable of doing big things” this year. Booker made that comment to Lansing State Journal reporter Nathaniel Bott earlier this week after competing in a Moneyball Pro Am game.

Booker was a highly-rated prospect in the 2023 class but played a smaller role as a true freshman this past season. He appeared in 27 games this past season, averaging 3.7 points and 1.7 rebounds across 9.2 minutes per game.

One Spartan listed among ‘preseason top 30 sophomores’ in college basketball list

Can you name which former McDonald’s All-American on the Spartans’ roster made the list?

One Michigan State player has been included in a preseason list of top sophomores entering the 2024-25 season. Can you name which former McDonald’s All-American it is?

Jeremy Fears Jr. was listed as the No. 19 player among best sophomores entering the 2024-25 college basketball season. He was the only Spartan to make the list, with many (including myself) wondering how fellow former McDonald’s All-American Xavier Booker wasn’t included.

Fears missed most of last season after experiencing an injury due to a gunshot while back home over the holidays. He is expected to be back to full strength by the beginning of the season and will battle with Tre Holloman for the starting point guard spot on the Spartans.

Check out the complete rankings from the College Basketball Report below:
