What: Mountain West Conference Tournament Opening Round
When: Wednesday, March 8th – 11:00 AM PT, 1:30 PT, 4:00 PT
Where: Thomas & Mack Center; Las Vegas, NV
How to Watch: All 3 games can be Livestreamed on the Mountain West Network

After an absolutely thrilling two and a half months of conference play, all 11 men’s basketball teams will converge on the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas for the 2023 Mountain West Conference Tournament. With regular season champion San Diego State the only team really guaranteed to be in the 68 team field announced on Sunday night, every other program is fighting for their postseason life.

The true bubble teams (Boise State, Utah State, Nevada) don’t hit the court until the quarterfinals on Thursday, but first we have three competitive and intriguing games on Wednesday. Let’s take a quick look at the three with some thoughts on the matchup and each team’s potential to make a run to the weekend. Note the early start times; that is to accommodate the women’s tournament which will hold their championship game on Wednesday night.

Game 1: 11:00 AM PT – #9 Fresno State Bulldogs (11-19, 6-12) vs. #8 Colorado State Rams (14-17, 6-12)
Expected Point Spread: Colorado State -3

The tournament opens with the 8-9 game and two teams that underperformed a bit this year. Colorado State has dealt with injuries to multiple key contributors going all the way back to the preseason, but head coach Niko Medved has had the same 9 man rotation in the lineup for the last 3 weeks, so that provides some much needed continuity. The Rams of course, possess one of the best guards in the country in Isaiah Stevens, who enjoyed a memorable senior night last Friday in a win over New Mexico. Their problem has been a lack of consistent scoring to help Stevens. The defense has been leaky at times as well.

Defense cannot be blamed for Fresno State’s shortcomings. The Bulldogs defend as well as anyone in the Mountain West, but for much of the season they couldn’t hit water from a boat when firing from the perimeter. That’s what makes Saturday’s game one of the great anomalies of the entire season. As a team, Fresno State made 21-32 three-pointers, and Jemarl Baker Jr. himself connected on 10-11 for 43 points. Context must be given, as they were playing Chicago State, an independent playing their final game of the season, and maybe just out for a little vacation in the lovely Silicon Valley. Still, had the Bulldogs shot anywhere near that the last couple months they would have a few more wins for sure.

Colorado State won both meetings between the teams this year, winning easily in Fort Collins in early January, before a last second victory in Fresno a few weeks ago. Both teams have reasons to think they can give top seeded San Diego State problems in the quarters if they can get by this contest – the Rams took the Aztecs to overtime in January, while the Bulldogs lost a 45-43 rock fight in mid-February. This is Stevens last hurrah, and as one of the best players in the conference’s history, he will attempt to will his team deep into the weekend. But the hunch here is there’s some carryover from Fresno State’s offensive explosion, and the better defensive team comes away with the W.

Prediction: Fresno State 69 Colorado State 64

Game 2: 1:30 PT – #10 Air Force Falcons (14-17, 5-13) vs. #7 UNLV Runnin’ Rebels (18-12, 7-11)
Expected Point Spread: UNLV -8

The middle game of the day features UNLV taking on Air Force. With the tournament taking place on their home floor, the Runnin’ Rebels will be a trendy pick to play spoiler and possibly steal a bid from a bubble team by claiming the conference’s automatic bid, especially on the heels of Saturday’s dramatic come from behind overtime win in Reno against rival Nevada. The Rebels trailed by 8 with less than 2 minutes left before some late heroics. It was quite the turnaround from Wednesday’s lifeless performance on Senior Night against Utah State, when UNLV gave up the last 12 minutes and were run off Jerry Tarkanian court by 25 points.

Air Force has improved tremendously under Joe Scott. The problem is, the Mountain West is really good, and it’s not easy to show tangible progress. They were not within 2 possessions of the top 4 teams in any of their regular season meetings, so they’re not quite ready for that type of breakthrough, but the talent has been upgraded and the Falcons are no longer an easy victory, they make you work for it. The next step comes from closing out games. They lost their last 3 outings by a total of 8 points, and blew late leads in 2 of them.

One of those 3 games was the only meeting of the season between these two. It was not an aesthetically pleasing game – the Falcons shot 39%, the Rebels 41%, and there were a combined 33 turnovers. UNLV snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a late EJ Harkless steal and bucket. Expect a bit more offense in this one, but we should still get a close game. The mid-afternoon Wednesday tip-off against AF is not likely to provide much of a home court advantage, and the Falcons hang around against just about everybody. If the Rebels don’t come prepared, their stay as host will be a short one. Eventually, it says here they will survive to Thursday, where they’ll present a tricky matchup for Boise State.

Prediction: UNLV 72 Air Force 67

Game 3: 4:00 PT – #11 Wyoming Cowboys (9-21, 4-14) vs. #6 New Mexico Lobos (21-10, 8-10)
Expected Point Spread: New Mexico -10

Wyoming and New Mexico will complete the opening day men’s tripleheader. For New Mexico, they know what’s in front of them; win 4 games in 4 days, or prepare for a home game at The Pit in the NIT. The Lobos have truly been one of the most entertaining teams in the country this season. Between packed houses at one of the best venues in the sport, a couple of star players (and a coach) with familiar last names, and some of the finishes to outstanding games, there has been no shortage of excitement for UNM fans. Of course, with some of that excitement has come heartbreak. Can they summon one final run to reward the large Lobo faithful expected to travel to Vegas?

Much like Colorado State, Wyoming has been snakebit by injuries, including to star forward Graham Ike, who has not suited up once for the Cowboys after a dominating 2021-22 campaign. Also like the Rams, Wyoming has one of the programs all-time best closing out his career in Hunter Maldonado. The 6th year senior was one rebound shy of a triple-double in his final home game last Monday against Nevada. Despite the injuries and dismissal of several other contributors (though that likely helped instead of hurt), this team has stuck together and played hard all season, a testament to head coach Jeff Linder.

These teams split two games, as UNM escaped Laramie with a one-point win on New Year’s Eve, before Wyoming drilled the Lobos in The Pit a few weeks ago. Jaelen House didn’t play, but his teammates didn’t really show up either, in what was by far their worst effort of the season. The Cowboys like to fire from deep, and with Maldonado creating open looks for his teammates and the overall length of Wyoming, this isn’t a great matchup for New Mexico. There isn’t a team in the field that the Lobos can’t beat, but they will have their hands full to win 4 straight, as they do not utilize much of a bench and the legs will be heavy later in the week. We have seen stranger things though, and a deep run by this group would surprise no one. They’ll have to work for it on Wednesday, but despite Maldonado’s best efforts, they should advance to a juicy matchup with Utah State late on Thursday night.

Prediction: New Mexico 81 Wyoming 74

Former USC players dismissed from Wyoming basketball program

It has simply been a disastrous year for Wyoming men’s basketball, and for Ethan Anderson and Max Agbonkpolo.

You haven’t heard much about former USC basketball players Ethan Anderson and Max Agbonkpolo this season. Why? They haven’t played well. The Wyoming team they played on hasn’t performed well. It’s one of those situations in which a transfer decision simply didn’t work out for anyone and everyone involved.

Anderson and Agbonkpolo have not transferred out of Wyoming. They were dismissed from the program on Tuesday — not for any scandalous behavior or unwelcome incident, but simply because Wyoming coach Jeff Linder didn’t like how they were playing. This was an unhappy collaboration between a coach and new players. The arrangement is over, as reported by Ryan Thorburn of the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune:

“I know what right looks like and I know what wrong looks like,” Linder said Tuesday on evaluating his struggling team down the stretch. “As we move forward, we just want to make sure we have the guys who want to be everyday dudes and who want to show up and work and put the time in and do the little things.”

Yikes. Linder obviously thinks Anderson and Agbonkpolo didn’t fit that description, which is really surprising given how workmanlike Anderson and Agbonkpolo were under Andy Enfield. They had their weaknesses as players, but laziness was not a trait either of them displayed at USC.

It is also worth noting that UCLA transfer Jake Kyman was also dismissed from the Wyoming program. All three Pac-12 transfers to the Cowboys were shoved out the door. That’s how bad this season has been for a Wyoming team which lost on Wednesday night at home to UNLV, and sits at the bottom of the Mountain West standings.

Fresh off of receiving a new contract Jeff Linder went to work, improving a Wyoming team that made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Larry Shyatt led the Cowboys there in 2015. After losing several players to the transfer portal Jeff Linder got commitments from three PAC-12 players and drastically changed the Offseason for the Cowboys.

After a surprise run to the NCAA tournament, the Wyoming Cowboys faced a lot of uncertainty about the future of the Basketball program as the season came to a close. How would the Cowboys be affected by the transfer portal? Would Hunter Maldonado and Drake Jeffries return for one more year? What about Jeff Linder? Would the coach that turned the program around in two years return to Laramie? One by one those answers started to come. Four players entered the Transfer Portal: John Grigsby, Deng Dut, Ben Bowen, and Eoin Nelson.

Wyoming will almost be a Pac-12 basketball team in 2023: 2 Trojans, 1 UCLA Bruin

Drake Jeffries announced that he would not be returning to the Cowboys in order to pursue a professional career in basketball. Hunter Maldonado announced that he would go through the NBA Evaluation process, and retain his last year of eligibility. Jeff Linder signed a new contract for a significant pay raise making him the head coach for the Cowboys until 2027. Fresh off of his new contract Jeff Linder hit the recruiting trail and pulled off arguably one of the best transfer hauls in all of college basketball this weekend.

On Friday, April 8th Ethan Anderson (USC), Max Agbonkpolo (USC), and Jake Kyman (UCLA) visited Laramie. Ethan Anderson posted on his social media stories a video of him outside of the Arena-Auditorium, and within an hour Jeff Linder and his tweeted out:

Within the hour Ethan Anderson posted this:

The Wyoming sphere on Twitter was buzzing. Ethan Anderson filled a big need for the Cowboys going into next year at the point and will take a huge load off of Hunter Maldonado if he decides to return. Optimism going into next year was starting to simmer when Jeff Linder and his Staff took to Twitter again:

Within the next hour Max Agbonkpolo posted this to his Instagram account:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CcIuS1-OJys/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Agbonkpolo and Anderson both bring tremendous athleticism and defensive prowess to the Cowboys, as well as Chemistry they have built over several years as teammates. The Buzz around Cowboy Basketball began to roar as the night came to an end. Jeff Linder, however, had one more trick (or player) up his sleeve and come Saturday Morning he and his staff took to Twitter again:

Shortly thereafter Jake Kyman tweeted this out

In less than 24 hours Jeff Linder got three players to leave the sun and beaches of Los Angeles for the High Plains of Laramie. Anderson, Agbonkpolo, and Kyman all figure to contribute for the Cowboys immediately next year, and the depth that they provide will help to push the Cowboys to the next level. College Basketball writers across the country are taking notice too, not just those who follow the Cowboys:

Wyoming Basketball and Jeff Linder aren’t sleeping on their laurels going into next season. Jeff Linder and his staff are positioning the Cowboys as potential conference favorites, and setting up for a potentially deep post season run.

Time will tell, but it certainly seems that Jeff Linder is earning every bit of his new contract.

The 2021-22 Mountain West basketball season was very fun, frustrating, exciting, and disappointing. Four teams made the NCAA Tournament which was great, but they all fell in the first round so that was disappointing. Fresno State made a deep run and won The College Basketball Tournament, but Utah State lost at home to Oregon in the NIT.

The season was up and down, which is nice.

With the national title game in the rear-view mirror and every major outlet putting out their first look at the top 25.

These will be changes with players going pro, transferring, and just testing the NBA waters and be returning to school.

In addition to the way-too-early top 25 rankings, we also take a look the early betting odds for the Mountain West. These are always a great value bet to place a few bucks in hopes of hitting it big.

Below are where the Mountain West teams are ranked or not ranked and a blurb from each outlet.

Heat Check CBB

25. San Diego State Aztecs

Projected 2022-23 lineup: Lamont ButlerAdam SeikoMatt BradleyKeshad JohnsonJaedon Ledee

Although the team has a pair of returning seniors, its success will hinge on Lamont Butler’s ability to succeed as the primary point guard with the departure of Trey Pulliam.

23. Colorado State Rams

Projected 2022-23 lineup: Isaiah StevensKendle MooreJohn TonjeDavid RoddyJames Moors

The biggest question facing Colorado State this spring is whether Heat Check CBB Third Team All-American forward David Roddy returns to campus. Assuming he does, the Rams have another team that should flirt with Top 25 publicity.

NCAA.com’s Andy Katz

23. San Diego State

The Aztecs are the most consistent program in the state of California and will be steered by Matt Bradley again — the Mountain West newcomer of the year. Lamont Butler and Keshad Johnson along with the possibility of Nathan Mensah back means the Aztecs will have the defensive ability to lock down again.

36. Wyoming

There is a chance Hunter Maldonado comes back. He will test the NBA draft process. If he comes back then the Pokes could be a Mountain West title contender again.

ESPN

The World Wide Leader shuts out the Mountain West in its top 25 but even the next five considered are not from the conference.

USA TODAY

25. Colorado State

Assuming the Rams bring back David Roddy (19.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg), they’ll be positioned to out-duel San Diego State in the Mountain West and stay in the national equation.

Sporting News

Another publication that is not a fan of the Mountain West and has zero teams in their early rankings.

CBS Sports

20. Colorado State

The Rams’ ranking is based on Colorado State’s top four scorers returning – among them Mountain West Conference Play of the Year David Roddy, who has declared for the NBA Draft but could return to school considering there’s no guarantee he’d be selected.

Busting Brackets

Honorable Mention: San Diego State Aztecs

With the news that 17 ppg scoring guard Matt Bradley is coming back, that automatically makes the Aztecs a contender in the Mountain West for next season.

No. 21 Colorado State

The Rams proved to be the one mid-major team not named Gonzaga that played up to expectations, getting a 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Junior forward David Roddy (19.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.9 apg) won Mountain West Player of the Year and is currently testing the NBA Draft waters, but odds are decent that he’ll come back for one more year.

If that happens, the duo of Roddy and Isaiah Stevens (14.7 ppg and 4.7 rpg) will once again have them in the top-25 range. And most of the supporting cast is set to return, including guard Kendle Moore, forward James Moor, and John Tonje, the team’s third-leading scorer from this year at 9.1 ppg.

Odds for the 2023 NCAA Tournament have opened and as far as Mountain West teams, San Diego State leads the list at +8000. Majority, if not all, of the US sportsbooks will have odds available for the tournament. Keep in mind that depending on the site, the odds will vary for each MW team so browse through each one to find the best value if you intend to get bets in this early.

Who are the Hoosiers?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Wyoming Cowboys are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 and they will be in the opening round game vs. Indiana. The Hoosiers come from the Big Ten — obviously — and their season ended with an early exit in their conference tournament.

Them like Wyoming have a chance to make a name for themselves in the NCAA Tournament with a chance in the First Four set of games.

WHO: Indiana (Big Ten) vs. Wyoming (Mountain West)
WHEN: Tuesday, March 15, 7:10 p.m. MT
WHERE: Dayton, Ohio
TV: truTV
STREAM: NCAA March Madness Live

To get to know the Hoosiers, Kevin Brockway covers Indiana for CNHI Sports Indiana, He answered a few questions for us to preview the Hoosiers.

1. What is the elevator pitch for people who didn’t follow Indiana basketball this year?

Indiana built an identity under first-year coach Mike Woodson based on defense, leading the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense (39.1 percent), ranking third in the league in scoring defense (65.9 ppg allowed) and second in the league blocked shots (4.97 bpg).

Junior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis (18.1 ppg) and senior forward Race Thompson (11.5 ppg) are consistent scorers in the post. Point guard Xavier Johnson has been more productive and is making better decisions with the ball in the last three weeks, averaging 18.1 points and 6.8 assists over his last eight games. Off the bench, senior point guard Rob Phinisee, sophomore swingman Trey Galloway and sophomore forward Jordan Geronimo are all back healthy and contributing.

2. How did Indiana’s preseason expectations compare to where they ended up as a play-in game for the NCAA Tournament?

The goal before the season was for Indiana to reach the NCAA Tournament. It was achieved, albeit barely. There was hope that Indiana would finish higher in the Big Ten standings after starting the year 7-4 in the league and upsetting rival Purdue, but the Hoosiers lost seven of their last nine regular season conference games to finish with a losing record in conference play (9-11) for a fourth straight season. Indiana did win two games in the Big Ten Tournament to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2013, which has re-energized the fanbase.

3. What is the status of sophomore forward Jordan Geronimo and sophomore guard Trey Galloway, snd how would that impact the Hoosiers if they don’t play?

Geronimo took part in Monday’s open workout in Dayton, Ohio and Woodson said he expects him to be available for Tuesday. Galloway played all three games in the Big Ten Tournament after missing the final five games of the regular season with a groin/hamstring issue.

Both are plus-defensive players. In Indiana’s Big Ten Tournament win over Michigan, Geronimo was plus-21 in his 12 minutes on the floor and played down the stretch because of his ability to guard Hunter Dickinson and Moussa Diabate in the post.  Galloway has improved his offensive game this season, getting to the basket and finishing as a point guard, while creating for others as well. Galloway had 10 assists in three Big Ten Tournament games over last weekend.

4. It seems like forward Trayce Jackson-Davis will be matching up with Graham Ike, what does Jackson-Davis do that makes him such a good player?

Jackson-Davis plays with excellent quickness and footwork with his back to the basket and is starting to develop a better face-up game. Of late, Jackson-Davis has been effective with Xavier Johnson on screen-and-roll plays. Johnson has taken advantage of Jackson-Davis’ leaping ability by feeding him more lobs for alley-oop dunks.

5. How do you see this game playing out?

I see it as a tight game for 30 minutes with Indiana pulling away down the stretch to win by 5-10 points. Fatigue will play a factor, especially with Wyoming crossing two times zones, and Indiana has more quality depth to rest its starters for longer stretches. Hunter Maldonado could present a problem for the Hoosiers because of his size as a point guard, but I’d expect Indiana to switch enough on defense to match up bigger defenders against him. I’d also expect Indiana to pressure Maldonado with strong on-ball defense throughout the game, given Maldonado’s issues turning the ball over.

The Wyoming Cowboys Men’s Basketball team has had one of it’s best regular seasons in Program History this year. This team has been seen as a NCAA Tournament lock for the better part of the season, Being ranked as high as 10th in the NET rankings, the Cowboys have received a lot of attention. However, the last three weeks of the season were brutal for the Cowboys with them dropping five out of nine games, including a semifinal exit from the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Despite the slow end to the season the Cowboys definitely have a resume that warrants them playing in the Big Dance. Let’s go over the top 3 reasons Wyoming belongs in the field of 68.

Final NCAA Tournament Projections: Four Bid Mountain West?

The Cowboys are Road Warriors

One huge factor for the Cowboys this year has been their performance on the road. The Cowboys have 9 true road wins, which is the best in the Mountain West Conference, and good for 11th in the country. Only one team from a Power Conference has more road wins than the Cowboys do. Tournament teams play well on the road. Wyoming has shown that they can win on the road. The Cowboys have road wins against Washington, Grand Canyon, Cal-State Fullerton, Utah State, Nevada, Air Force, Fresno State, San Jose State, and a win against UNLV on their home court in the conference Tournament. This is the most road wins that the Cowboys have had in program history.

“Wyoming week”

Arguably the most one of the most impressive stretches during the season for Wyoming was from January 31 to February 8th in which they won 4 huge games in 8 days. During that stretch, the Cowboys had wins against Colorado State, Boise State, Fresno State, and Utah State.

At the time each one of those teams was top 50 in the NET Rankings, and Boise State and Colorado State are almost certainly playing in the tournament next week. Furthermore, it showed that the Cowboys know how to win close games, as each of those games were won by a single possession. Winning close games is what March Madness is all about.

Hunter Maldonado and Graham Ike

I will be the first to admit that this is not the most important factor on Selection Sunday, but it would be an absolute travesty to not see the country’s highest scoring duo not playing on the biggest stage in March. Maldonado and Ike have flat out been impressive this year, and they provide a lot of mismatches that would help the Cowboys against other teams in the big dance. Hunter Maldonado is playing as a 6’7” point guard who likes to play out of the post. Not many teams can match up well against a 6’7” point guard.

Graham Ike plays like an old school big man in the modern game. He generally lives in the low post and has the grace and finesse to make all but the stingiest defenders pay, add in the fact that he is left-handed and has a 7’5” wingspan and it makes him a nightmare for opposing coaches to gameplan against. With these two players, the Cowboys play in a very different way as compared to many teams today. Many teams today live and die by the three-point shot, whereas Wyoming lives in the post.

Bonus: Even CSU fans know that the Cowboys belong in the Tournament!

Tune in to the Tournament Selection show Sunday, March 13th at 4 PM MDT, to find out if the Cowboys make it into the Tournament.

For the first time in a long time, the top four seeds of the Mountain West tournament made it to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

San Diego State will be taking on Colorado State in what should be an epic game as will Boise State vs. Wyoming in the No. 1 vs. No. 4 matchup

Weeks leading up to the conference tournament we looked at TeamRankings.com who provided predictions for the Mountain West tournament.

Heading into the semifinals, San Diego State is the favorite to win the conference tournament. The Aztecs have been the favorite to win the conference tournament for at least a month.

San Diego State is now given just under 33% chance to win it all followed by Boise State, Colorado State, and Wyoming in the fourth spot.

This conference tournament has been one of the most competitive and fun of all 30-plus out there. Any of these four teams can win it all and currently San Diego State vs. Boise State is the most likely conference championship.
