Hulk Hogan says Shane McMahon pitched WrestleMania 39 match for them

Shane McMahon probably wishes he did face Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 39 instead of injuring himself against The Miz.

At almost 70 years old and with a myriad of health issues, Hulk Hogan is the furthest away from the ring he’s ever been. His last WWE match was in 2006, and his last general ring appearance was in 2012 with TNA when he was 58 years old.

Despite this, he apparently wants one more match.

In an interview on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Hogan said Shane McMahon discussed the idea of a match between the two of them at WrestleMania 39. While it obviously did not happen, WWE’s original WrestleMania headliner said he’ll see how he feels in six months, as he’s always wanted a retirement match (h/t Fightful for transcription).

“You know what’s so funny, Shane McMahon called me. He goes, ‘Hey, you got one more in you, old man?’ I said, ‘Take it easy with the old man stuff, brother.’ I said, ‘What do you want to do?’ He goes, ‘All you gotta do is stand in the middle of the ring, and I’ll come do it.’ I said, ‘Right now, my back needs a little more work, but that’s something we can talk about next year.’ I’ve always wanted to have a retirement match. I’m not moving around the way I should be, so I’m going to keep working and keep training and keep doing rehab and see where I’m at about six months from now. All I found out in the wrestling business, brother, is you never say never,” Hogan said.

McMahon, of course, returned to the ring at WrestleMania 39, only to tear his quad in an impromptu match with The Miz.

Hogan also revealed that he spoke with McMahon “about three months before WrestleMania,” and prior to that, a talked about “one more [run].”

“I talked to Shane probably about three months before WrestleMania, and he happened to be at Madison Square Garden, and I guess there’s a place in Madison Square Garden where they got the Hall of Fame, and they’ve got my boots up there, and they got my tights. He took a picture standing in front of it, and Shane called me at home. He goes, ‘Hey, look at that picture I just sent you.’ I looked at it, he goes, ‘Well, you got one more in you?’ I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ He started running storylines by me to try to ramp us into that mode. I said, ‘Those were all good storylines, whether you’re coming at me like, ‘Hulk, you quit. My father made you and you left, you walked out on my father,’ which I did. Or go the opposite way, that ‘my dad did you wrong,’ because him and his dad go back and forth all the time. ‘My dad did you wrong, I wanna revitalize your career.’ There’s several things we came up with. I told him, ‘I just need to get my feet underneath me more. Now’s not the time, not this WrestleMania, definitely not. Let’s talk about four or five months from now and see where I’m at,” he said.

It seems Hogan is hoping his body will hold up so he can have one more chance. If WWE agrees, fans who want to see him in the ring again may get their wish.

Steve Austin had WrestleMania 39 talks, but new TV show wouldn’t let him commit

Stone Cold Takes on America prevented Steve Austin from being able to realistically prepare for a WrestleMania 39 match.

For seemingly one last time, Stone Cold Steve Austin tore the house at WrestleMania 38 in the main event, defeating Kevin Owens in a No Holds Barred match. Nearly two decades of anticipation for his in-ring return culminated in a night that both evoked nostalgia for older fans and created a fresh memory for the new generation.

Austin did not appear at WrestleMania 39 earlier this month, though legends like Trish Stratus and Lita still featured in the show. Superstars like Owens, Sami Zayn, The Usos, Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes controlled the main event instead, offering ample star power without the Texas Rattlesnake.

However, Austin told Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso that he spoke with WWE about a WrestleMania 39 match. His presence would have added another layer to an exciting weekend, but with production for his A&E show, “Stone Cold Takes on America,” underway, the timing did not work for another match at Austin’s standard of fitness.

“I haven’t spoken to this, but I’ll give you the story,” says Austin. “I met with some people from WWE. We talked about the possibility of me wrestling at WrestleMania 39. The biggest thing in my mind was the presentation and what kind of match it was going to be. Going back to 38, the way the KO thing was presented—I love KO—I turned that down three, four, five times until the creative finally came to what it ended up being. I didn’t want it constructed as a real match, per se. I needed something that could turn into one, and it did, but I think that’s why we got away with it. The Dallas crowd was very receptive. I hadn’t been around, so the timing was right.

“But to do a proper match, I’d have to be in off-the-charts shape. I told them, and this is the exact truth, I said, ‘Guys, I’m just fixin’ to go into production on this show, Stone Cold Takes on America, and until we start production, I don’t know what my life looks like. I can’t commit.’ Sure enough, there were technical issues before we finished. I was supposed to finish a month before we did. There’s no way, with the schedule I was doing—driving an RV all over God’s creation, doing all I was doing—that I would be ready. I had two 30-pound dumbbells, a 45-pound sandbag, and a 25-pound kettlebell. Working 15 hours a day, then getting in a 30- or 40-minute workout, that doesn’t get you ready for WrestleMania. And I was really protected at WrestleMania 38. This time, that wasn’t going to be the case. That was a true statement: Until this show was over, I couldn’t commit.”

At 58 years old, Austin’s time is dwindling to compete at another WrestleMania. WWE legends frequently appear no matter their age in a non-wrestling capacity, but anyone hoping for one more match from Austin must wait and see what WrestleMania 40 holds.

In the meantime, everyone can see what Austin was working on this spring when “Stone Cold Takes on America” debuts on A&E at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, April 30.

Trish Stratus competed at WrestleMania 39 with partially torn hamstring

Trish says no one knew she was injured and she just sucked it up because it was WrestleMania.

When Trish Stratus returned for a WrestleMania 39 match with Becky Lynch and Lita against Damage CTRL, it marked her first in-ring showing in nearly four years. Having last competed at the Grandest Stage of Them All in 2011 in a less prominent six-person tag team match, it was overdue for one of WWE’s top talents of the last 20 years to battle again at WrestleMania.

While Stratus won her WrestleMania match, she was apparently not 100 percent that night to face Bayley, Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky.

In an interview with Busted Open Radio, Stratus said she had “a few obstacles” for this match, including a partially torn hamstring that nobody knew about.

“I had a few obstacles. I had a partially torn hamstring, by the way. Nobody knew about that,” she said. “It was just like, WrestleMania, let’s just go,” she said. “This time, I had this injury, so I was a little unsure going in, but man, there’s something about feeling at home. It’s like riding a bike, as you guys know when we get back in there, your body’s like, ‘I got this just. Just do your thing,’ and it just flows. I’ve kept my health and fitness up, and that always plays into it as well. I am good in those moments, right? I work well under pressure. I always feel like I have to prove myself every time I go out there, so that was like a big driving force for me that evening, was to go out and prove that I belong in this match, that I belong with these other talented women and that I still belong here, period.”

Credit where it’s due for Stratus holding her own while hurt at WWE’s biggest show. Plus, she wrestled in a WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship match nine days later and simultaneously started a program with Lynch. With a potential gap before that payoff match — rumors suggest it might not come until SummerSlam — Stratus can return to health and deliver a memorable performance on another big stage.

Snoop Dogg hit a hideous, beautiful people’s elbow on The Miz to save a Wrestlemania 39 segment

Snoop stepped up when Shane McMahon left a match early due to an apparent injury.

For the second night in a row, Wrestlemania 39 host Snoop Dogg threw his co-host, former WWE champion The Miz, into an impromptu match at the biggest event in all of pro wrestling. But unlike Saturday night’s throwdown with NFL veteran turned podcaster Pat McAfee, Sunday’s bout with a returning Shane McMahon didn’t appear to go as planned.

McMahon’s knee buckled awkwardly following a leap frog, leaving Miz to circle the ring awkwardly as cameras turned away from the part-time wrestler and former WWE executive. When it became clear McMahon could not continue, Snoop answered the call.

He laid out Miz with a pair of rights while stalling for time. Then he hit the ropes as gingerly as you’d expect from a 51-year-old non wrestler channeling The Rock.

Behold, either the worst — or best — People’s Elbow in Wrestlemania history.

Soon after came the 1-2-3 for the win. The Miz’s 2023 Wrestlemania record fell to 0-2 with losses to two different people whose full time jobs are very much not wrestling.

McMahon’s medical status is unclear. But whether his medical stoppage was planned or a horrible accident, Snoop Dogg filled in admirably to add another spectacle to a weekend filled with them. And if it’s a horrible accident, our hearts go out to him in hopes of a speedy recovery.
