Watch: Young wolf has fight on hands with feisty squirrel

Footage captured in Minnesota shows a wolf pup discovering that capturing squirrels can involve painful consequences.

–The Voyageurs Wolf Project on Thursday shared a series of images titled “Trail camera gold” as part of a donation request. The Instagram images, with no description, show a wolf preying on a squirrel with what appear to be painful results.

We featured the back story and video showing this predation event last July. Both are posted below.

Trail-cam footage captured recently in Minnesota shows a wolf pup discovering that capturing squirrels can involve painful consequences.

“This wolf pup learned that squirrel bites on the nose don’t feel so good,” the Voyageurs Wolf Project stated via social media.

The accompanying footage opens with a slow-motion sequence in which the pup sends the squirrel flying after receiving a bite on the tip of its snout.

It picks up with more of the hunt, at regular speed and in slow motion, including a second bite to the snout.

One viewer described the action as a “food fight.”

The footage certainly underscores that life as a young predator includes working hard for just about every meal.

Watch: Wild stallion fiercely protects foal from wolves

Footage shows the wolves searching for an opening, but the stallion and herd mates weren’t about to give them one.

A group that studies wild horses in Alberta, Canada, on Monday shared trail-cam footage showing a stallion and herd members intently defending a foal from wolves.

“A lot of people ask us if the Stallion would try to protect his foal from wolves,” Help Alberta Wildies Society stated via Facebook. “This short video will give you an idea of what that might look like.”

The footage (posted below), which HAWS said was captured a year ago, shows the stallion leading a determined effort to cut off the wolves’ advances. (Click here if video player doesn’t appear below.)

https://www.facebook.com/HelpAlbertaWildiesSociety/videos/1600909290503558

Viewers will note that the wolves steer clear of the larger horses (and their hooves) but remain persistent in trying to single out the foal.

Reads the top comment: “The wolves want them to run so they can separate their intended prey and isolate it to take it down. When the herds stand their ground and put the foals in the center the predators tend to look for easier prey.”

The outcome was not clear, but the horses appear determined to hold their ground.

On a related topic, HAWS also has clips showing horses running from grizzly bears, which can sprint up to 35 mph. The bears, like the wolves, are hoping to catch a weary foal or a larger horse to fall and become injured.

In 2022, we featured one such chase that also involved a foal, with the grizzly in close pursuit. HAWS was quoted:

“The next time someone tells you that the Wild Horses have no natural predators, send them to me. We are losing a lot of horses this year, sooner and quicker than in past years. Not just the foals. Adults also.”

It was not clear if the bear was successful in its chase.

Crystal Palace vs. Wolves: How to watch friendly, TV channel, live stream

The Premier League visits Annapolis, Md. as Crystal Palace takes on Wolves in a summer friendly

Crystal Palace will take on familiar opposition in a Wednesday summer friendly, with Wolves the opposition for a preseason match at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

Palace, featuring U.S. men’s national team defender Chris Richards, have played two preseason matches since beginning preparations for the 2024-25 Premier League season.

A 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic wasn’t ideal, and while a 6-3 win over League One side Crawley Town was plenty of fun, shipping three goals to a third-tier opponent underlines an area to improve.

Yellowstone wolf on solo patrol chased for a mile by coyotes

“This yearling wolf was not being tolerated by this coyote family in the valley and they made it well known,” researcher Taylor Rabe stated in a video post.

A researcher who studies wolves in Yellowstone National Park has shared footage showing a young wolf fleeing from coyotes with its tail between its legs.

“The first video really highlights the size difference between wolves and coyotes,” stated Taylor Rabe of the Yellowstone Wolf Project, in reference to her Instagram slide post featuring wolf 1497F. “This yearling wolf was not being tolerated by this coyote family in the valley and they made it well known.

“They chased her for about a mile before she quickly crossed the road and left the area all together.”

Although coyotes are about one-third the size of wolves, they’re formidable in groups and will aggressively defend cubs. (Female gray wolves can weigh up to 110 pounds; adult coyotes average 20-35 pounds.)

Wolf 1479F, who is wearing a research collar, belongs to the Junction Butte Pack in the park’s northern range. Rabe’s post also shows the inquisitive canine feasting on a carcass and inspecting a bison on a game trail.

The researcher added that it’s common for young wolves to explore on their own and explained that wolf 1479F was only a couple of miles from the main pack, which “is nothing in the wolf world.”

Watch: Wolf pup learns hard way that squirrels will fight back

Extraordinary trail-cam footage shows the young wolf receiving at least two bites to its snout while trying to secure its meal.

It sure sounds like former USMNT prospect Owen Otasowie is done playing

From a onetime top USMNT prospect to out of the game at age 23

Remember Owen Otasowie?

It wasn’t too long ago that Otasowie was seen as a future fixture of the U.S. men’s national team. Now, it seems like he may be done with the game for good at age 23.

The midfielder/defender made his debut for Wolves in 2019 at age 18. In the 2020-21 season, Otasowie made six Premier League appearances for Wolves while making the matchday squad on 23 occasions.

Otasowie’s exploits in the English top flight led to his first senior U.S. national team call-up and cap in November 2020.

But things started going downhill for Otasowie after a €4 million move to Club Brugge in the summer of 2021. A few months after his arrival in Belgium, there were reports he was struggling to adapt. Otasowie didn’t make a single appearance for the club in the 2021-22 season.

The following season, Otasowie returned to the fold and played a handful of matches early in the campaign. But by November 2022, he had gone completely AWOL and Brugge had reportedly stopped paying him.

His last appearance in any match came for Brugge’s reserves in September 2022.

Since then, Otasowie has been mostly out of the public eye, though he did found the clothing company Carsicko in 2021. As a onetime Burberry model, Otasowie has carried a longstanding interest in fashion.

But will he ever return to the field? Based on a live chat shared by @Eyesandvibes on X, that doesn’t appear likely.

“Eventually I just got to the point where I was like, I don’t even give a f—,” Otasowie said.

“The way they troll you is insane. You better be f—–g Cristiano Ronaldo on all days. If you ain’t Cristiano Ronaldo on all days, prepare to be trolled. S–t touch? They are on your ass for anything.

“I don’t play [soccer],” he added. “I haven’t touched a ball in two years.”

Premier League clubs consider Wolves proposal to ditch VAR

VAR is still a big rival for Wolves, who want the Premier League to abandon it entirely

The Premier League’s VAR era may be on the verge of ending.

Wolves is behind a resolution to abandon VAR, with the Premier League set to vote on the matter on June 6 at its annual general meeting.

In a statement published by The Athletic, Wolves referred to VAR as being “at odds with the spirit of our game,” calling for Premier League clubs to end the practice starting with the 2024-25 season.

“There is no blame to be placed — we are all just looking for the best possible outcome for football — and all stakeholders have been working hard to try and make the introduction of additional technology a success,” read Wolves’ statement.

“However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical debate on its future.”

The Premier League adopted VAR for the 2019-20 season and has used it ever since. However, many calls — particularly those involving offside, which the Premier League adjudicates with visible lines provided via Hawk-Eye technology — are narrow enough that controversy remains regardless, leaving few parties satisfied.

The Premier League, in a statement to The Athletic, said that clubs are “entitled to put forward proposals at shareholders’ meetings and we acknowledge the concerns and issues around the use of VAR.”

However, the league added that it remains “in support of VAR.” The Wolves proposal will require 13 of the other 19 Premier League clubs to agree for the league to abandon the practice.

In April, the Premier League approved the implementation for semi-automated offside technology — something along the lines of what was introduced at the 2022 World Cup — for the 2024-25 season, though it may not be introduced at the very beginning of the campaign.

Premier League data supports continuing with VAR

Among the world’s top leagues, VAR is extraordinarily commonplace. 29 of UEFA’s 30 top-ranked leagues use it, with the only exception coming after clubs in Sweden’s top flight rejected a VAR proposal last month.

Multiple clubs have lashed out at VAR over the course of this season. Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said it was “it’s time to question whether someone remote disallowing that goal is really what football wants or needs.” after a 2-1 loss to West Ham in April that saw a Wolves goal called back by VAR.

Later in April, Nottingham Forest publicly accused a VAR official of denying the club three penalties due to an alleged allegiance with Luton Town.

Per the BBC, the Premier League claims that the rate of correct refereeing decisions was just 82% before VAR, and has climbed to 96% since its introduction five years ago.
