U.S. U-20 midfielder Clark to join Minnesota United from RB Leipzig

The midfielder departs RB Leipzig without making an appearance

Minnesota United has announced the signing of midfielder Caden Clark from RB Leipzig.

Clark has signed a two-year contract with the MLS club, which he’ll join in January after completing a half-season loan with Danish second-tier side Vendsyssel FF.

“Caden Clark is a talented, young footballer who is excited to be joining our club,” head coach Adrian Heath said of the 20-year-old.

“He’s a Minnesota kid, which is another big plus for us, he’s coming home. We know what he is capable of and we’ve seen his talent here in Major League Soccer. We are really thrilled to get him beginning next season and I know our fans will be excited as well.”

Clark made his professional breakthrough with the New York Red Bulls in 2020, emerging as one of American soccer’s brightest prospects and earning a transfer to the Red Bulls’ sister club RB Leipzig in 2021.

The Minnesota native went on consecutive loans back to the Red Bulls, first for the second half of the 2021 season and then for the entirety of the 2022 season. Clark had a difficult 2022 campaign back in MLS, as injuries and form limited him to just 16 total appearances.

Clark returned to RB Leipzig for the second half of the 2022-23 campaign, but didn’t see the field despite making the team’s matchday roster several times. The midfielder departs the Bundesliga club without making an appearance.

At the international level, Clark has earned 11 caps with the U.S. U-20 side. He was a part of the team that won the 2022 U-20 CONCACAF Championship, but did not make the roster for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

USMNT players in UEFA Champions League 2023-24

11 U.S. players are in the world’s biggest club competition

There was once a time where a U.S. men’s national team player being on a Champions League squad list — even if they might have no shot at playing in any actual games — was a very big deal.

It’s safe to say those days are gone, with no fewer than 11 U.S. players on the books for clubs that qualified for this year’s competition.

Sure, in some cases the player in question is probably a major longshot to even dress on gameday, but between Christian Pulisic’s sublime start to life at AC Milan and a USMNT trio at PSV, USMNT fans are likely going to be watching games on multiple screens just to keep up.

Here is the complete list of U.S. men’s players to make it to this year’s Champions League proper:

RB Leipzig coach hints at Caden Clark loan next season

The U.S. youth international could make his RB Leipzig debut this weekend

RB Leipzig head coach Marco Rose has hinted that Caden Clark may be sent out on loan next season to get more first-team minutes.

Clark returned to Leipzig in January after spending the entirety of the 2022 MLS season on loan with sister club New York Red Bulls.

Pro Soccer Wire reported in January that Leipzig was looking to loan Clark out for the remainder of the 2022-23 season, with interested clubs in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, but a move never materialized.

Clark has made the bench regularly for Leipzig since then, but is still looking for his club debut. That could come on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach, as Leipzig navigates injuries to Christopher Nkunku and Xaver Schlager.

Though Clark could make his debut this weekend, Rose hinted that the club would once again look to send the U.S. U-20 attacker out on loan next season.

“We might think about giving him playing time at another club,” Rose said in quotes published on Tag 24.

“He’s doing well, but we need patience. He’s a great footballer with good basic technique who recognizes a lot of things. But when it comes to decision-making there’s still a lot of untapped potential, and we’ll work on that with him.”

Clark appears likely to make the USMNT roster for the U-20 World Cup, which will kick off in May. The location of the tournament is currently unknown after FIFA stripped Indonesia of hosting rights on Wednesday.

Haaland goes supernova as Man City dumps RB Leipzig out of Champions League

It’s hard to keep track of how many times Haaland scored

Where do you even begin with Erling Haaland and Manchester City’s Champions League showing on Tuesday?

Let’s start with the facts: Man City tore RB Leipzig to shreds in their second-leg clash at the Etihad Stadium, winning 7-0 and sealing a 8-1 aggregate win. Haaland scored five times, equaling a Champions League record held by Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano for goals in a single match in the competition.

The goal barrage took Haaland up to 39 goals in 36 appearances in his first season with Man City, which are the most in one season by a player in the club’s history (the previous record of 38 had stood since 1929). Haaland’s second on the night was his 30th in the Champions League in just 26 appearances in the competition, the lowest total to surpass the 30-goal mark. Only 23 players in Champions League history have more goals than Haaland’s total of 32.

For a spell at least, RB Leipzig was not being run off the field. They were certainly having to defend for long spells, but after 20 minutes the scoreboard still read 0-0. However, a rather controversial penalty, confirmed by VAR, broke their resolve. Haaland put just enough power on his low spot kick to beat goalkeeper Janis Blaswich, and City were ahead.

That could have sparked Leipzig into stepping their game up and challenging Man City; after all, the aggregate score at that point was merely 2-1. Instead, less than two full minutes later, Haaland finished off a distinctly un-Man City goal. Manuel Akanji thumped a desperate Leipzig long ball forward in hope more than anything else, and Haaland nodded it down for Kevin De Bruyne.

Under some pressure, De Bruyne decided to just have a crack at it from distance, sending a laser that that crashed off the crossbar and into Haaland’s path. From there, Haaland did the “big lad” thing and headed into the unguarded net.

Leipzig was not completely out of it, and recovered their feet to enough of an extent that it seemed like they’d get in for the halftime break down a mere 2-0. However, in the half’s final seconds, Rúben Dias met a corner at the back post, nodding the ball off the post.

Dias was already celebrating as the ball bounced along the goal line, but Haaland’s decision to charge in just to be sure ended up being a good call. Amadou Haidara attempted a dramatic clearance literally off the line, but as he spun to hoof the ball away, it was blocked into the goal by who else but the Norwegian striker.

Leipzig trudged off in need of a miracle comeback, but things got so much worse. Just four minutes into the half, İlkay Gündoğan danced around Haidara on the edge of the box, opening up room to sneak a fourth past Blaswich. It marked the 100th goal for Man City in the 2022-23 campaign.

A defeated Leipzig simply didn’t have the intensity to keep Man City from running up the score, and Haaland wouldn’t be denied a fourth. Another corner for the hosts found Leipzig’s defending to be a suggestion rather than a true obstacle.

Spare a thought for Blaswich, who did extremely well to stop Haaland’s header and a follow-up from Akanji, only to have to watch Haaland smash the rebound past him anyway.

Haaland’s fifth was a near replay of the fourth. This time, the set piece was taken short, but once again Akanji put a shot on frame, and Blaswich somehow managed to claw it away.

By now, you know the rest.

Pep Guardiola showed some mercy to the visitors, bringing Haaland off in the 63rd minute for Julián Álvarez. Sadly for Leipzig, even that didn’t signal an end to the onslaught, with De Bruyne scoring an absolute wonder goal in stoppage time.

Good luck to whatever team has to deal with Haaland and Man City in the quarterfinal! They’re going to need it.

USMNT U-20 attacker Caden Clark set for another loan after RB Leipzig return

The U.S. Under-20 attacker will return to RB Leipzig, but likely won’t be staying long

Caden Clark’s loan spell with the New York Red Bulls has ended, but it doesn’t appear that he’ll be staying at parent club RB Leipzig when he returns to Germany.

Clark was originally acquired by Leipzig last June, then loaned back to the Red Bulls for the remainder of the 2021 MLS season. Ahead of the 2022 campaign the teenager was sent on another loan to Leipzig’s sister club in MLS, this time for the entirety of the season.

But Clark played just 475 minutes for the Red Bulls in 2022, tallying one goal and two assists spread across 16 appearances (three starts).

A league source tells Pro Soccer Wire that Clark will be returning to RB Leipzig in January, but he is set to head on another loan. Teams in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands are eying a January move for the 19-year-old attacker.

Following the Red Bulls’ ho-hum loss at home in the playoffs last Saturday to FC Cincinnati, Clark posted a video to social media indicating he was leaving MLS again.

“It’s been a pleasure, thank you NY! Onto the next,” Clark said on Instagram.

Clark emerged as one of the top young talents in MLS after making his debut in 2020, earning a senior USMNT call-up last December.

In 47 league appearances (23 starts), Clark has seven goals and seven assists. But setbacks — including having his appendix removed last summer — have seemed to set Clark’s development back a bit.

Clark played a major role for the U.S. U-20 side this summer as it won the CONCACAF U-20 Championship, qualifying for the 2023 U-20 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics in the process.

Jordon Pefok keeps rolling, scores again for Union Berlin

Good USMNT news: Pefok is on fire for Union Berlin

Jordan Pefok’s start at Union Berlin is everything U.S. men’s national team fans hoped it would be.

After scoring on his competitive debut in the DFB Pokal, and then scoring in his Bundesliga debut against city rivals Hertha Berlin, the USMNT striker did it again, producing a tidy run and finish to give Union a 35th minute opener against RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Despite countering with just three men against five from Leipzig, Union sliced through the visitors. Janik Haberer passed from the left for Sheraldo Becker, and Pefok maintained his run, waiting for the final Leipzig defender to turn towards the ball. Once he committed, Becker slipped Pefok in, and before any retreating defender could interfere, the USMNT striker took two touches, got Janis Blaswich to lean to his left, and fired into the opposite corner to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Pefok then turned provider for Becker, who scored six minutes later to give Union a surprise 2-0 lead.

Pefok’s excellent start to the season comes after stepping up a level, having moved to Berlin from Young Boys in Switzerland. At the moment at least, he has to be among Gregg Berhalter’s top options for the final World Cup warm-up matches for the USMNT, which are against Japan and Saudi Arabia next month.

Tyler Adams joins Leeds United in reunion with Jesse Marsch

Leeds United States!

Tyler Adams is heading to the Premier League, where he’ll reunite with Jesse Marsch after Leeds United completed a transfer widely reported to be worth £20 million ($24m) to bring him to England from RB Leipzig.

Adams, a U.S. men’s national team fixture, moves to Leeds just as their first-choice defensive midfielder over the past few seasons, Kalvin Phillips, moves to Manchester City. It is expected that Marsch, has worked with Adams at both the New York Red Bulls and at RB Leipzig, will install Adams at the base of his midfield in the coming Premier League season.

They’ll be joined by another familiar face from the MLS and Red Bull worlds, as Leeds acquired USMNT youngster Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg just over a month ago.

While Adams made 37 appearances across all competitions in each of the last two Leipzig seasons, by the end of this past season it appeared that head coach Domenico Tedesco preferred players like Kevin Kampl and Konrad Laimer as his starters. In the club’s final 15 Bundesliga games this year, Adams made 10 appearances, and only three of those were starts.

However, a move to Leeds points at better days ahead. While Adams will be swapping a club with Champions League expectations for one that avoided relegation by an extremely slim margin, he has extensive experience playing for Marsch, and his experience in continental competition will be a big positive in the high-pressure environment that is playing for a club with the kind of fervent support that Leeds has.
