Which Premier League teams are owned by Americans?

Half of the Premier League’s 20 teams are now under majority American ownership.

With the news of Everton’s takeover by U.S. private equity firm 777 Partners, the influence of American owners in the Premier League has never been higher.

When that deal goes through, it will mean that exactly half of the Premier League’s 20 teams are under American ownership. That includes four of the league’s biggest teams: Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.

The English top flight has become an attractive investment for prospective owners as the league’s revenue from broadcast deals continues to skyrocket.

Here, we have listed all 10 Premier League clubs currently under American ownership. Some of the clubs include multiple owners/investors, so the American owners are italicized in those cases.

USMNT coach Berhalter hints Richards may soon leave Crystal Palace

Richards has recently been linked with a move back to the Bundesliga

U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter has hinted that Chris Richards could be set to leave Crystal Palace in the coming days.

Richards has established himself as a key player for the USMNT, but injuries and coaches’ decisions limited him to just 10 total appearances last season after an offseason transfer from Bayern Munich.

This season has been more of the same for the 23-year-old, who has yet to play in any league games for Palace and made his first appearance of 2023-24 in a Carabao Cup win over Plymouth on Tuesday.

After naming Richards to his September roster on Wednesday, Berhalter was asked in a media availability about his lack of minutes at the club level.

“That may change in the next couple of days, right? That’s not set in stone,” the coach said, with the transfer window set to close on Friday.

“We see him as an important piece to what we’re doing,” Berhalter continued. “I think he’s got a tremendous amount of potential. Now for him, it’s about getting minutes and staying healthy. He’s a great guy, great competitor, and looking forward to having him back in camp. His last camp went really well with the Nations League and scoring a goal (in the final against Canada).

“We think that he’ll make a big impact in this camp, but also excited to see what the future brings for him.”

Richards has been capped 10 times by the USMNT, and was forced to withdraw from contention for the World Cup squad last year due to a hamstring injury.

Earlier this month, Kicker reported that Stuttgart was interested in bringing Richards in on loan to help replace Konstantinos Mavropanos, who transferred to West Ham.

Joining Stuttgart would reunite Richards with Sebastian Hoeness, who coached Richards at Bayern Munich and during two loan spells at Hoffenheim. Hoeness was named Stuttgart coach in April 2023.

Forbes ranks 20 most valuable soccer teams in the world

Valuations of the world’s biggest clubs are sky high

Who are the most valuable soccer teams in the world?

With success being more and more tied to an ability to spend, being a “big” club — at least in financial terms — is the clearest indicator of whether a given team is going to contend for trophies in the world’s top leagues.

That said, what defines value doesn’t necessarily require a team to be in the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga, or Serie A. MLS has three teams in the top 20, including LAFC becoming the first club to break the $1 billion valuation barrier.

That said, Europe is still the home of the world’s biggest clubs, and its most valuable. In particular, eight of the top 20 hail from the Premier League, which will not be a particular surprise given the league’s global reach.

Here are Forbes’ 20 most valuable teams in global soccer.

Premier League home stretch: Where things stand as season enters its final month

Some teams are having a blast, while others are going through it

The Premier League is getting down to the nitty-gritty.

The end of the season is approaching, with most teams having five or six games left to secure a trophy, a spot in Europe, or just keep themselves in the top flight for another year.

For some teams, the end of the season was expected to be a pressure-cooker, but has instead been something of a celebration. For others, it’s one last chance to fight their way to safety, or at least salvage some pride in an otherwise disappointing season.

Here’s where everyone stands heading into the last month of the 2022-23 season.

Roy Hodgson’s wife doesn’t seem too broken up about his coaching return

“I think she was glad to see the back of me”

There were several considerations Roy Hodgson needed to make when deciding whether to come out of retirement at age 75.

One of the biggest was how his wife would feel about the whole thing. As it turns out, that doesn’t seem to have been too big of a hurdle.

Hodgson retired after coaching Watford for the second half of last season, only to be brought back by former club Crystal Palace earlier this month after Patrick Vieira was sacked.

Ahead of his first game in charge, Hodgson spoke to the media about his return to the game.

“I have accepted that I had retired, as it were, because that’s what everyone had been saying. When I walked down the street people would say to me, ‘Are you enjoying your retirement?'” he said.

“At the same time, I have never really felt old enough to retire, if the truth be known. I know what I am, I know my birth certificate tells me I am, but the way I feel doesn’t really tell me that.

“So I suppose there has always been an opening there for a project such as this one whereby I know very clearly what the project is, what the objective is, why I am there and what is expected of me.”

He then touched on the subject of his wife Sheila, who doesn’t seem to have been too broken up about him spending a bit more time outside of the house.

“As far as my wife was concerned she didn’t make too many complaints either. I think she was glad to see the back of me.”

USMNT defender Chris Richards announces he’ll miss the World Cup

The Crystal Palace center back has not played since August due to a hamstring injury

Chris Richards will miss the World Cup due to a lingering hamstring injury, he announced on Instagram on Tuesday.

Richards has not played for Crystal Palace since August due to the injury, and hasn’t played for the U.S. national team since January.

Crystal Palace head coach Patrick Vieira said over the weekend that Richards had yet to resume team training, putting his status for the World Cup in serious doubt with just two weeks remaining until the USMNT’s first match.

On Tuesday, one day before the USMNT announces its World Cup roster, Richards confirmed himself that he will not be going to Qatar.

“Gutted that this injury has ruled me out of the World Cup but I know that the boys will go crazy regardless,” he said. “I’ll be rooting for y’all the whole way. Go out and make history.”

USMNT center back options

Richards was almost certain to make the roster had he been healthy, and was a candidate to start next to Walker Zimmerman at central defense.

The 22-year-old joins Miles Robinson as World Cup roster locks who will be forced out of the tournament with injury. Robinson tore his Achilles in a game with Atlanta United in May.

His absence makes it more likely that either Aaron Long or Cameron Carter-Vickers will partner Zimmerman when the USMNT begins the World Cup on November 21 against Wales.

With Richards out another defensive roster spot will also open up, which could be filled by Fulham’s Tim Ream.

Ream hasn’t played for the USMNT since September 2021, but is in the midst of a stellar campaign in the Premier League. According to a report from the U.S. Fútbol Podcast, Ream has been selected for the World Cup squad in Richards’ place.

USMNT’s Chris Richards is running out of time to get fit before the World Cup

It’s time to start nervously tugging on some shirt collars

The U.S. men’s national team will reveal its World Cup roster next week, and that tight timeline is not looking good for Chris Richards.

The Crystal Palace center back has been out for over a month with a hamstring injury, and according to his boss at club level, he’s only just begun workouts separate from the team.

“Chris has started doing some work outside but he didn’t do any kind of training with the team yet,” said Patrick Vieira in quotes published by The Athletic. “What is important is about him physically, there is a step he has to go through and at the moment he hasn’t done any kind of training with the squad.”

Vieira added that he is following guidance from club doctors, giving them the final say on whether Richards is cleared to train or not.

“The decision is not going to be mine but with the doctor we have to decide as a club what is best for the club,” said the former Arsenal and France midfielder, who reportedly indicated that he plans to speak with USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter in the near future.

Richards the latest concern

As is the case with many national teams, injuries are starting to pose more and more of a conundrum for the USMNT.

A healthy Richards seems like a strong bet to make Berhalter’s 26-man squad, and possibly even start in Qatar. However, it’s not known how severe his hamstring issue is, and the USMNT is 17 days away from kicking off against Wales.

Given that center backs are generally counted on to play the full 90 minutes if at all possible, Richards likely needs to go beyond being fit enough to play some minutes, and get to a place where he can reliably play a full match.

If Richards were the only concern, the situation wouldn’t be ideal for the USMNT. Instead, the list long enough that we need to break out the bullet points:

That list doesn’t include the long-term injury Miles Robinson suffered a few months ago, and it doesn’t account for any of the bad news to come between today and the final two rounds of club matches before players report to the USMNT.

In other words, it’s gonna be a long, nervous couple of weeks before that flight to Qatar lifts off.

Erling Haaland explodes for second-half hat trick in Manchester City win over Crystal Palace

Haaland’s probably going to score a few goals this year

It seems like Erling Haaland is going to score a lot of goals for Manchester City.

For the second week in a row, the defending Premier League champions came from two goals down to get a result, this time in a 4-2 win over Crystal Palace, and it wouldn’t have happened without Haaland’s first hat trick since completing a summer move from Borussia Dortmund.

Palace raced out to an early 2-0 lead at the Etihad Stadium thanks to a John Stones own goal and a powerful header from Joachim Andersen, and got into halftime without conceding.

Last week, Newcastle lead Man City 3-1 only for Pep Guardiola’s side to come back for a 3-3 draw. This time, they took it a step further, scoring four times in the second half to make it three wins out of four to start the 2022-23 season.

Bernardo Silva got the comeback in motion with a 53rd minute goal, setting the stage for Haaland. First, the Norway striker knifed through the Palace defense to nod in Phil Foden’s delicate 62nd minute cross, leveling the scores.

Man City then took the lead in the 70th minute, as Haaland got the final touch following a stunningly intricate sequence of one-touch play inside the box after a quickly-taken corner had caught Palace off-guard.

Finally, Haaland sealed his hat trick as the game got stretched. Ilkay Gundogan drove forward through the midfield before pushing play forward to Haaland, who held off a defender before powering a shot past Vicente Guaita, effectively killing the game off with his league-leading sixth goal of the season.

“It was a proud moment for me and my family and yes I’m happy,” Haaland told the BBC after the match. “It’s a mentality that we trust each other and we know the chances will come. It’s about keeping going. In the end we scored four goals and that’s a really good thing.”

“We have not done anything special for him that he didn’t do before,” noted Guardiola, again speaking to the BBC. “It is important for him to get goals. He has the sense to score goals. The third one, to have the quality to be strong then put the ball in the net.”

Joachim Andersen got death threats for the crime of being headbutted in the face

Andersen posted a sampling of the abuse he received from fans. It was not pretty

Joachim Andersen has shared some of the vile abuse he received online, including death threats, after he was headbutted by Liverpool forward Darwin Núñez in Monday night’s game.

Andersen tangled with the Liverpool striker for 55 minutes before the Uruguayan lost his cool and headbutted the Danish defender square in the face.

After the game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp said that Andersen “provoked” Núñez, but also admitted the striker was wrong to react the way he did.

The day after the game, Andersen posted on his Instagram stories, saying he got between 300-400 “of these messages last night. I understand you support a team but have some respect and stop act tough online.”

Andersen then posted a sampling of the abuse he received from fans in his inbox. It was not pretty.

The BBC reported that Andersen reported the messages to the police via Crystal Palace’s police liaison officers.

Núñez, meanwhile, posted an apology on Twitter on Tuesday.

“I’m aware of the bad attitude I had,” he said. “I’m here to learn from my mistakes and make sure they don’t happen again.”

Darwin Núñez just went and lost his mind

The striker’s Anfield debut was memorable for all the wrong reasons

Darwin Núñez had a memorable home debut at Anfield, just not in the way he would have hoped.

The Liverpool striker damaged his side’s bid for three points against Crystal Palace by getting sent off for a vicious headbutt on Joachim Andersen.

This wasn’t one of those headbutts where two players come together and one recoils back in agony after a slight touch. Núñez, when slightly provoked by Andersen, got his money’s worth when he drove his forehead into the Dane’s chin and drew a deserved a 57th-minute red card.

Liverpool, down a goal at the time, battled back admirably and drew level after a superb individual effort by Luis Díaz. But despite pressuring Palace late with a man disadvantage, Liverpool could only draw 1-1.

It was the second straight draw to start the season for the Reds, who are already four points behind Man City. Considering the kind of early-season form City has shown, that already appears to be a big deficit.
