The Badgers fall out of the Top 25 AP Poll

After a pair of road losses this week, Wisconsin basketball fell out of the AP Top 25 Poll for the first time all season.

The Badgers dropped games to Purdue and Iowa to fall to 10-10 in the Big Ten and 16-11 overall. Around the Big Ten, Michigan fell to No. 4 after a loss to Michigan State on Sunday. They were jumped by Illinois who vaulted to No. 3 this week.

March equals madness, and the Big Ten conference will be at the center of it. College basketball’s culminating month is just two days away, and in the best conference in the country a majority of teams are fighting for their position in the dance.

The Big Ten has been a man amongst boys in college basketball this season, leading the way with the Big 12 as the best conferences in the sport. The depth, scary potential at the top, and talent within the league will result in a handful of squads receiving a ticket to dance. How many get in and where are they going to be seeded? There is still a crucial week of basketball and a Big Ten tournament to play before we get definitive answers on that.

Where does each Big Ten team stand and what do their tournament hopes look like as we near March? Let’s start from the bottom:

Five takeaways from Wisconsin’s 68-51 win over Northwestern

Wisconsin gets back in the win column vs Northwestern

After a slow start that was reminiscent of the past few weeks, Wisconsin used the defensive, mistake-free identity that their previous success was built on to come away with a 68-51 win over Northwestern. The Badgers snapped their first two-game losing streak of the year in the process.

No. 21 Wisconsin (16-8, 10-7 Big Ten) withstood a long scoring drought through the middle of the first half and took control of the game near the end of the first 20 minutes. Micah Potter and D’Mitrik Trice were humming on all cylinders in the pick-and-roll, and freshman guard Jonathan Davis looked decisive and confident alongside them. The three Badgers combined for 32 of the 34 Badger points in the first half to build a 34-24 Wisconsin lead.

The defense of Brad Davison near the end of the first half and Tyler Wahl throughout the second half helped to hold Northwestern (6-14, 3-13) to just 51 points on 40% shooting. Wisconsin held it down at that end to never allow the Wildcats back in. Boo Buie had streaks of offense for Northwestern to finish with 19, but he was the only Wildcat in double figures.

Here are five takeaways from Wisconsin’s road win at Northwestern:

Wisconsin basketball has a new Wednesday opponent after Louisville cancellation

The Badgers have scheduled a quality new opponent for Wednesday

What is college basketball in 2020? Finding out a game is cancelled and scrambling to schedule a quality opponent that neither school has time to prepare for. We have seen it all over the nation this first week, and now we have seen it at Wisconsin.

After positive cases within the Louisville program, the Badgers and Cardinals have canceled this Wednesday’s Big Ten/ACC challenge game. In it’s place, the Badgers have scheduled a last minute non-conference home game with Rhode Island:

Rhode Island is out of the Atlantic 10, one of the best conferences in mid-major college basketball. Led by dynamic senior guard Fatts Russell, the Rams are off to a 3-2 start with wins over San Francisco, Seton Hall, and South Florida. They have played a demanding early schedule that also featured losses against top-25 Arizona State and Boston College.

Wisconsin managed to schedule a quality opponent for Wednesday, and have a bounce back opportunity at home after Friday’s buzzer-beating loss to Marquette.
