Colts with reported ‘interest’ in Louisville OT Willie Tyler

The Colts are one of several teams with reported ‘interest’ in Louisville offensive tackle Willie Tyler. Here is what you need to know.

The Indianapolis Colts are one of several teams who have shown ‘interest’ in Louisville offensive tackle Willie Tyler, according to Aaron Wilson.

Along with the Colts, other teams that were mentioned include the Giants, 49ers, Jets, and Raiders.

Tyler measures in at 6-6 and weights 310 pounds. He did not test all that well, recording a Relative Athletic Score of just 3.26, which included a 5.22 second 40.

Tyler’s RAS alone would make him at outlier for GM Chris Ballard, who has had only three prospects in the last two drafts score below 9.0, with the lowest RAS being 8.48.

Tyler played 2,124 snaps in his career. His first season in 2021 was spent at Louisiana Monroe, 2022 was with Rutgers, and this past season at Louisville. All of his snaps have come as a left tackle.

This past season, Tyler allowed seven sacks and 26 pressures. He ranked 169th in pass-blocking efficiency and 126th in PFF’s run-blocking grade.

With only four offensive tackles currently on the Colts’ roster, from a pure depth perspective for training camp and the preseason, they are going to have to add more players to the mix.

During his pre-draft press conference, Ballard discussed the depth of the offensive line class and mentioned being able to find ‘really good’ players in the middle rounds and even later than that.

“I think there’s a few positions that’s got some real depth,” said Ballard Friday at his pre-draft press conference. “Like the O-line in this draft is excellent and there’s depth throughout. I truly believe you’re going to get a really good player in those mid-rounds and even some later because of the depth of the group.

Tyler is the 69th-ranked tackle on Dane Brugler’s big board and will likely go undrafted, signing somewhere afterward.

Willie Tyler is closing in on double-digit offers, the University of Louisiana-Monroe offensive tackle getting some legitimate ‘Power Five’ interest.

On Wednesday, Tyler had a visit with a coach from Syracuse. On Thursday, he is expecting an in-home visit from Rutgers offensive line coach Augie Hoffman.

“Honestly, it’s been pretty cool. I’ve been talking to him and [running backs] coach [Andrew Aurich] a lot. Since he played in the NFL and he’s working with the running backs, I can get a different perspective on how they do things. Coach Schiano says he helps the offensive line,” Tyler told ‘Rutgers wire.’

“Getting words from him, seeing where I fit in.”

Hoffman, a former standout at Boston College, spent three years in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints.

Tyler, who has had a long winding journey to the NFL that includes a stint in junior college, is looking at the cold hard facts of the situation when he entered the transfer portal. With two years of eligibility remaining, Tyler wants to put himself in the best possible position for the NFL.

Location isn’t a big concern given that the Wisconsin native has played hi entire college career far from home.

“I mean really just the school that can help me get to goals. I want to play in the NFL, I’m looking at the type of offense they run, strength staff, nutritionists,” Tyler said. “Some places, I know the players so I’m calling them.”

Tyler said he plans on a visit to NC State next week and potentially a couple of midweek visits. He is less concerned about meeting with potential teammates as he is checking out the program and learning the ins and outs of how the team functions.

A few schools are beginning to consistently reach out to Tyler.

“Honestly, Purdue has been really consistent…Rutgers, Syracuse. Cal has been pretty consistent, talking to them pretty much consistently every day,” Tyler said. “NC State, we just started talking the day before.”

Here are three transfer portal players who can boost Florida’s offense in 2021

The Gators are losing a significant portion of their offensive core to the NFL after a wildly successful 2020 and will need reinforcements.

The Gators’ offense was a bulldozer in 2020, forcing their way downfield in an unstoppable wave that was irrevocably destined for the end zone. NFL teams noticed. Florida is starting nearly from scratch with their offense in 2021 and a number of starting jobs are totally up for grabs.

Head coach Dan Mullen was not unprepared for this eventuality. Emory Jones is the presumptive heir to Kyle Trask‘s spot as the starting quarterback. Five-star transfer Demarcus Bowman brings an additional dimension to the Florida run game that was mostly left in the wake of the passing offense in 2020. However, without much veteran experience or certainty on the team, more could be done to buttress the depth chart.

Mullen has never shied away from recruiting guys from the transfer portal. He’s certainly been active in the regard so far this offseason, already having brought in Antonio Shelton and DaQuan Newkirk to replace the departing duo of defensive tackles. Don’t be surprised if he does the same to bolster the offense. If he does turn to the transfer market, here are three players who could pique his interest.

Texas has their third opt out of the 2020 season, this time in offensive linemen Willie Tyler. A redshirt sophomore from Racine, Wisconsin, Tyler was going into his second year in the program. He was a JUCO transfer from Iowa Western Community College.

Tyler announced his decision on his Twitter account.

After talking it over with my family. Also much thought and prayer. While this decision was VERY hard for me to make, with everything going on in the world and with the uncertainty of having a season. I have decided to opt out of the 2020 football season. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity that I have to be apart of the longhorn family. I’ll be back in 2021.

Defensive end Marquez Bimage and running back Daniel Young are the other two players who have opted out for COVID-19 precautions. All three have stated they will be back to play in the 2021 season.

Tyler did not take a snap in the 2019 season, taking a redshirt year. He has been transitioning to the offensive line after spending most of his high school career playing on the defensive line.

Listed at 6-7 and 335 pounds, Tyler is still a work in project for offensive line coach Herb Hand. Once his transition is complete, Tyler is going to have great size and potential to play offensive tackle.
