Notable quotes from Oregon QB Bo Nix after Ducks’ fifth spring practice

In Year 5, Bo Nix is playing with some freedom. He spoke about that after Saturday’s practice.

Saturday marked a pair of firsts for the Oregon Ducks, and in particular, the media members who cover the team.

Not only was it our first chance to talk to new offensive coordinator Will Stein since he took the job early in December, but it also gave us our first opportunity to talk to Bo Nix since he led a heroic comeback against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Holiday Bowl at the end of the 2022 season.

There were a lot of things to talk to Nix about, like his decision to return to Oregon for another year, and how things have been going with Stein as his new QB coach and coordinator.

Here are some of the most notable quotes from Nix during his presser.

Notable quotes from Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein after Saturday practice

“Our job is to get our best players the ball as many times as possible. Plays are highly overrated. It’s about the players here at Oregon, and we have unbelievable players.”

At long last, on Saturday afternoon we got to talk to Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator Will Stein for the first time since he took the job in December, filling the void left by Kenny Dillingham after he left for Arizona State.

Obviously, there was a lot to talk about.

Since coming over from the University of Texas San Antonio, Oregon’s offense has had an impressive offseason under Stein. He kicked off his tenure in Eugene by flipping 4-star QB recruit Austin Novosad from Baylor to the Ducks, and he also helped lead the charge to bring Bo Nix back to Oregon for one more year, while playing a hand in landed a handful of offensive transfers as well.

There are a lot of questions going forward for Stein and the Oregon offense. After seeing such marked improvement under Dillingham a year ago, there are high expectations for year one with a new coordinator.

A lot of questions were asked on Saturday. Here are some of the most notable quotes from Stein in his first presser with Oregon media members.

Troy Franklin talks year two with Bo Nix, Ty Thompson growth, and Will Stein’s offense

Troy Franklin talked to media for the first time in months on Thursday. He dished about Will Stein’s offense, and which CBs have impressed him so far.

There’s a nice mix of returning faces and new additions for the Oregon Ducks this season. While almost half of the roster has been turned over, and over 40 recruits or transfers are now on the team, some of the top performers from the 2022 season will be in Eugene again this year.

Among them are QB Bo Nix, WR Troy Franklin, RB Bucky Irving, and TE Terrence Ferguson.

We got our first chance to talk to Franklin, Oregon’s leading WR from last season, on Thursday afternoon following the Ducks’ fourth spring practice of the year. It gave us a chance to discuss what Franklin had been working to improve over the offseason, how his chemistry with Nix is growing, and what his new role in the Will Stein offense.

It resulted in some great insights and quotes from the junior WR. Here are a few of the most notable things Franklin said.

Oregon Spring Ball Player Spotlight: Austin Novosad and the future of the Ducks’ QB position

There are a handful of Ducks we can’t wait to see once spring ball starts. QB Austin Novosad is near the top of the list.

The Oregon Ducks will be taking the practice field and getting the spring football season started a week from today. This fact has brought a ton of excitement to Eugene.

Why? Because after the successful and encouraging 2022 season under Dan Lanning, there seems to be more anticipation surrounding this program than we’ve seen in the past few seasons. The Ducks have a Heisman contender at quarterback, a potential Biletnikoff contender at wide receiver, and a running back group that could be among the best in the nation next season. On the defensive side of the ball, there are some key returning starters in the front seven, a couple of promising up-and-coming players in the secondary, and a handful of intriguing transfer-portal players who could end up making a massive difference for Oregon. On top of all of that, the Ducks are fresh off of back-to-back top-15 recruiting classes, stacking the roster with young, unproven talent.

It’s safe to say that there are a handful of guys that we can’t wait to see take the field in Eugene.

To kick off our preview of some of these players, we wanted to focus on QB Austin Novosad, a 4-star player from the 2023 class who flipped to Oregon late in the game, choosing Will Stein and the Ducks over the Baylor Bears.

Here’s our breakdown of the young QB who could end up giving a glimpse of what’s to come this spring in Eugene.

Report: Ducks to add Antonio Parks as offensive analyst

Report: Ducks to add Antonio Parks as offensive analyst

The Oregon Ducks are reportedly making another addition to the coaching staff this week, adding Antonio Parks to the offensive staff as an offensive analyst.

The move was first reported by On3’s Justin Hopkins and later confirmed by The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman.

Parks is a former player at UTSA, where Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein worked for a couple of years as the OC. Prior to accepting the Oregon job, Parks took a job at Arizona State as a defensive recruiting analyst for Kenny Dillingham.

Parks was a safety at UTSA as a player after transferring from the Arizona Wildcats during his playing career. He is early in his coaching career, but has worked mainly on the defensive side of the ball before coming to Oregon and joining up with Stein.

How Will Stein’s contract compares to past Oregon offensive coordinators

A look at how Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator Will Stein’s contract compares to other OCs in Oregon history.

The college football world has become a more lucrative business for assistant coaches over the years.

While we know that head coaches in the sport make an astounding amount of money — guys like Jim Harbaugh, Nick Saban, and some of the other top coaches in the nation bank upwards of $10 million per year — there’s been a nice boom for coordinators in the sport as well.

Earlier this week, The Oregonian’s James Crepea reported the contract details for Will Stein, the Oregon Ducks’ new offensive coordinator, which were obtained via a public records request. According to Crepea, Stein is set to earn $800,000 per season with the Ducks, and can make up to $125,000 in bonuses should the team reach certain incentives along the way.

This encouraged me to go back as far as I could to see how Stein’s contract compared to other offensive coordinators in Oregon’s past. While the former UTSA OC is not as established as some guys before him — Kenny Dillingham, Scott Frost, Chip Kelly — does the inflation in the market that we’ve seen over the past few years have him making as much money as those coaches?

Unfortunately, I was only able to uncover contract details as far back as Scott Frost in 2013. While it would be interesting to see what guys like Mark Helfrich, Kelly, and Gary Crowton made as coordinators before him, my research capabilities stopped me short of finding out that information.

Here are Stein’s contract details compared to the OCs before him in Eugene.

Which storylines have dominated the Oregon Ducks’ offseason so far?

Sco-ing Long host Zachary Neel had Oregon reporters Jared Mack, Jarrid Denney on the podcast to draft off-season storylines for the Ducks.

It’s been a busy offseason for the Oregon Ducks by any stretch of the imagination. There have been coordinator changes, numerous recruiting flips, veteran passers returning, and transfer portal craziness that has allowed Dan Lanning to reshape the roster ahead of his second season in Eugene.

And that’s only to mention about half of what took place over the past two months in Eugene.

While it would be too time-consuming to list everything that has taken place between now and the start of the offseason on November 26, 2022, we wanted to take a second and go over some of the most important things that have taken place in Eugene.

In order to try and sift through the most important occurrences, I brought On3’s Jarrid Denney and 247Sports’ Jared Mack on the Sco-ing Long Podcast to draft the offseason. With five picks each, we chose our favorite storylines, most entertaining events, or most important developments going forward.

Identifying the biggest winners, most impressive wins on Oregon Ducks’ historic signing day

The Ducks just had arguably the best signing day in program history. Here are our biggest winners and most impactful wins from the day.

No matter how you want to look at it, the notion that the Oregon Ducks aren’t the biggest winner coming out of the first day of the early signing period in college football is bordering on insanity.

The Ducks entered the last 48 hours with some tough recruiting news after the loss of 5-star QB Dante Moore, holding the No. 14 ranked recruiting class in the nation. After Wednesday, they now hold the No. 7 class in the nation and were able to pull off some of the biggest flips and commitments of the entire day.

It started early with the flip of 4-star Baylor Bears QB Austin Novosad. Not too long after the surprising flip came from Notre Dame’s 5-star safety Peyton Bowen, which was soon accompanied by a commitment from 5-star EDGE Matayo Uiagalelei. After a little bit of time passed, 4-star LSU CB Daylen Austin announced that he was flipping to Oregon, and then 4-star Notre Dame RB Jayden Limar completed his flip to the Ducks early in the afternoon.

On top of all of that drama, the Ducks were able to sign a majority of the players who were already committed to Oregon, losing only 4-star CB Caleb Presley in an expected flip to Washington.

The afternoon was capped off with a commitment from OT Ajani Cornelius, one of the most coveted players in the transfer portal, giving the Ducks a potential starter on the offensive line.

Not a bad day, huh?

That’s an understatement. It could very well go down as the best signing day in Oregon history, with the Ducks starting out as the No. 14 class in the nation and finishing well within the top 10.

Here are some of the biggest winners and individual wins from the day:

Ducks flip 4-star QB Austin Novasad from Baylor Bears

A massive win for Dan Lanning and Oregon OC Will Stein. The Ducks have pulled off the flip and landed former Baylor commit Austin Novosad, the No. 9 QB in the nation.

The Oregon Ducks made a splash in the recruiting world on Wednesday, pulling off a flip that gets their quarterback room back in order after losing 5-star QB Dante Moore to the UCLA Bruins earlier in the week.

4-star quarterback Austin Novosad, the No. 9 QB and No. 86 overall player in the 2023 class, has announced that he will flip his commitment from the Baylor Bears and instead join the Ducks going forward. Novosad has a long-standing relationship with Oregon’s new offensive coordinator Will Stein, and once Stein came to Eugene and a spot at the QB position opened up, the wheels were in motion for the Ducks to pull off this flip.

With Bo Nix returning for the 2023 season, Novosad will be able to likely redshirt as a freshman and pick up some valuable experience from the veteran who projects to be a Heisman Trophy candidate this season. Going forward, Novosad could be in competition for the starting job in 2024.

The Ducks were dealt a tough blow on Monday when Moore announced that he would flip to UCLA, but Dan Lanning and his staff did a great job of quickly pivoting and finding a way to still get a win at the end of the day.

Ducks pick up new predictions to flip 4-star QB Austin Novosad from Baylor

Things are heating up for the Ducks as we head into the early signing day. Flip watch is officially on.

With the news on Monday that 5-star quarterback Dante Moore was going to flip his commitment from the Oregon Ducks to the UCLA Bruins, a lot of fans started to wonder what Dan Lanning and his staff were going to do going forward.

It has since become clear that the staff has been working on a contingency plan for a bit now, knowing that there was a chance that Moore was going to flip. That plan may be working.

A pair of 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions came in on Tuesday night that show Baylor Bears’ 4-star QB Austin Novosad, the No. 9 QB in the 2023 class, is likely to flip to the Ducks.

Novosad has a relationship with new Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein, and the two have kept in touch since Stein came to Eugene.

With Bo Nix returning for the 2023 season, it has become clear that the Ducks are set at the starting QB spot for this season, but they need players to fill out that room and compete for the starting job in 2024. Should they be able to pull off the flip from Baylor and land Novosad, who is the No. 86 overall player in the 2023 class, it would be an impressive pivot from Lanning and his staff after suffering a blow with the Moore decommitment.
