Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner makes NFL analyst’s All-Preseason team

Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner made NFL analyst Jacob Camenker’s All-Preseason team, with four others earning honorable mention

Preseason football is important for everyone on the roster, to varying degrees. For established veterans, it’s important to get back into the flow of things after an offseason of inactivity. For players fighting for a roster spot, it’s important to get the reps and show coaching staffs – both their own and the 31 other teams’ – that they belong in this league.

For rookies, like Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner, it’s their first chance to see professional action and to show why they were drafted.

While Turner didn’t see much action during this year’s preseason, he made an impression when he was out there. So much so that he’s been named to one NFL analyst’s All-Preseason team. Jacob Camenker of The Sporting News released his First-Team All-Preseason team Monday, and Turner is one of his two choices at EDGE.

Speed was the name of the game for Turner this preseason. He used his athletic ability to beat Saints offensive tackle Andrus Peat in the team’s first game and got a key sack in the red zone. That gave fans and the league just a glimpse of the talent that made the Vikings trade back up into the first round to grab Turner.

If Turner can continue to develop and maintain that speed, he should be a dangerous weapon in a Brian Flores-led defense. Turner only saw 31 snaps this preseason, but it was more than enough to show that his first-round selection was warranted.

Along with Turner, the Vikings earned four honorable mentions on Camenker’s All-Preseason team: Quarterback Jaren Hall, wide receiver Trishton Jackson, defensive tackle Taki Taimani, and kicker Will Reichard all received nods for their summer performances.

Several Vikings among league leaders in various stats from 2024 preseason

With the 2024 NFL preseason over, the Minnesota Vikings had a number of players among the statistical leaders, including QB Jaren Hall.

Preseason football is less about raw stats and more about getting reps in in anticipation of the coming season and looking good while doing it. That said, it’s always nice when those two things coincide. That is the case for several Minnesota Vikings players this year, as the team has several preseason stats leaders.

The plan and hope is that Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold can start all 17 games and play well in doing so. However, Jaren Hall showed during the preseason that he has developed since his brief starting stint last season. In limited action, Hall was among the preseason leaders in passer rating, finishing third overall at 112.5, just behind Jaguars backup Mac Jones and Broncos starter Bo Nix, who led the league at 116.7.

Though he may not have won the battle for WR3 against Jalen Nailor, Vikings wide receiver Trishton Jackson showed he deserves a role in the offense this preseason. A favorite target of anyone taking the snap, Jackson tied for third in receiving yards. But Jackson wasn’t just wracking up yards, he was also putting the ball in the end zone. Jackson led all receivers and tight ends this preseason with three scores.

The final statistical leader for the Vikings was new kicker Will Reichard. The sixth-round pick from Alabama finished his college career as the NCAA’s FBS all-time leading scorer. He picked up right where he left off, coming in second this preseason with 29 points, just two behind leader Cairo Santos. Reichard also booted a 57-yard field goal this preseason to show off his range.

Vikings special teams leaders are now in place following roster moves

The special teams units of the Minnesota Vikings have found their leaders as we head into the final week of the preseason in 2024.

The special teams units of the Minnesota Vikings have found their leaders as we head into the final week of the preseason in 2024. Training camp started with competitions at both the kicking and punting positions and almost three weeks later we have resolutions to those jobs.

For kicking, rookie Will Reichard earned the job early in camp. Meanwhile, Ryan Wright earned the punting job on Monday after the team released Seth Vernon.

Reichard has been phenomenal in training camp and in both preseason games for the Vikings. They drafted the Crimson Tide kicker after letting Greg Joseph leave in free agency, which seemed puzzling at the time. It shows that perhaps we need to give Kwesi Adofo-Mensah more credit for his decision-making.

With the punting job now decided. Ryan Wright can head into the final preseason game knowing he has the job locked up. He will be a part of the final 53-man roster decision.

Vikings K Will Reichard continues to impress during training camp

The former Alabama kicker continues to be efficient during the preseason.

Minnesota fans have bad memories of the Vikings drafting kickers out of college. The Vikings drafted Blair Walsh (Georgia) in 2012 and while he started off strong, fans won’t forget his playoff miss against Seattle. Then Minnesota took Daniel Carlson (Auburn) in 2018. The Vikings waived Carlson early, and he turned out to be a good enough kicker for the Raiders.

In the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Vikings took Alabama kicker Will Reichard. Minnesota has all but said Reichard is the unquestioned starter, which could scare some fans, but he was as good as they come in college.

And he continues to impress the Vikings as the preseason rolls on.

According to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, Reichard made all five field goals in Thursday’s joint practice with the Cleveland Browns. He also boomed in a 52-yard field goal, and most of the kicks he made were from longer distances. While practice is a different atmosphere than gameday, Viking fans should be excited about what they could have in Reichard.

Will Reichard earns kicker job, follows it up with rough day at Training Camp

Heading into training camp, there was to be a kicker completion between John Parker Romo and Will Reichard, it quickly was won by Reichard.

Heading into training camp, there was to be a kicker competition between John Parker Romo and Will Reichard, and Reichard quickly won. Despite that news coming to him on Monday, he followed it up with a rough Tuesday practice with the team.

According to Leighton Glodek of Strictly, the Vikings 2024 draft pick had difficulty from distance.

Will Reichard was just 1-for-3 on field goals from 50 yards or more. Before the release of John Parker Romo and Reichard’s winning the competition, he had been 5-for-5 at camp kicking. Both misses were wide right, one of which was captured by a fan at training camp.

Vikings fans know how kicking can make or break a game or even a season. In recent memory, the team has had a rough go of it on special teams, especially in the kicker and punter position. When the team drafted Reichard in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, they hoped he would be the long-term solution.

Time will tell.

Update on the kicking competition from Vikings training camp

There is a kicking competition in Vikings camp and we have an update for you and it appears that there is an early leader in the race.

Of course, the most underrated but exciting part of the football game is the kicking. Okay, maybe not for Vikings fans, given their history. Despite that, there is an open competition for the starting kicking job for the Vikings, and it is worth following after the investment in the position.

According to Will Ragatz of Bring Me News, there has been a clear leader to start training camp for the Minnesota Vikings.

2024 NFL Draft pick Will Reichard out of Alabam has been a perfect five-for-five to start training camp. Meanwhile, free agent signing John Parker Romo has started three-for-four, with the one miss being a wide left mishap.

Whenever a team drafts a kicker, it is often met with questions, ones we asked when the pick was made and analyzed. The position is full of free agent options and other players who could be signed as UDFAs, but if Reichard is proven to be a consistent piece for the team, then perhaps he was worth the pick.

We will leave this discourse open for more down the road.

Vikings sign three draft picks as rookie minicamp opens

The Minnesota Vikings announced the signings of rookies Michael Jurgens, Will Reichard, and Levi Drake Rodriguez as rookie minicamp opens.

The 2024 NFL draft was less than a month ago, but the work has just begun for the incoming class. The Minnesota Vikings kicked off their rookie minicamp and while the headlines are J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner taking the field for the first time, it’s not the only noteworthy thing to come out of the first day.

Today, the Vikings announced they have reached contract agreements with three more members of their rookie class: offensive lineman Michael Jurgens, kicker Will Reichard, and defensive lineman Levi Drake Rodriguez.

The Vikings took Jurgens and Rodriguez with their two picks in the seventh round, while they were able to get Reichard in the sixth. With the signings of those three, the Vikings are left with four members of the 2024 draft class unsigned: the aforementioned McCarthy and Turner, along with fourth-round pick Khyree Jackson and sixth-rounder Walter Rouse.

With the rookie wage scale, signing the draft class is largely a formality, and fans should expect all four remaining unsigned rookies to be under contract before too long. Certainly, before the pre-season starts in earnest this summer.

Minnesota Vikings sign punter Seth Vernon

The Minnesota Vikings have signed punter Seth Vernon to the roster. He will be the second punter on the team when camp starts.

The Minnesota Vikings have signed punter Seth Vernon to the roster. He will be the second punter on the team and will likely compete with Ryan Wright for the starting job.

Vernon most recently played in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons during their 2022 training camp. He signed with the Falcons after being undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. He attended Portland State, where he played his entire career for them.

Vernon averaged 43.9 yards per punt and an average hangtime of 4.06 seconds. His career-long is 66 yards, and 26 of his 87 career punts went inside the 20-yard line while only six went for touchbacks.

The signing of Vernon is only the latest addition to what is gearing up to be a revamped special teams room.

Vernon and Wright will compete for the punting job, while 2024 NFL Draft selection Will Reichard and John Parker Romo will compete for the kicking job. The Minnesota Vikings will have many competitions across various positions; special teams are looking for special players who can make special plays.

Mock draft watch: Breaking down the Lions haul in The Athletic’s 7-round projections

Mock draft watch: Breaking down the Lions haul in The Athletic’s 7-round projections from Dane Brugler

The latest projections from longtime NFL draft analyst Dane Brugler from The Athletic are now out, and it’s a massive undertaking. Brugler projected all seven rounds in his latest mock draft.

For the Detroit Lions, Brugler projected a trade out of the first round. This mock draft has the Las Vegas Raiders moving up to No. 29 and sending the Lions No. 44 and No. 77 overall so the Raiders can snag Washington QB Michael Penix Jr.

[lawrence-related id=105629]

That leaves Detroit with two second-round picks and two more in the third. The Day 2 picks focus on most of the team’s primary needs.

Brugler’s final haul for Detroit:

2 (44). Zach Frazier, G/C, West Virginia
2 (61). Braden Fiske, DT, Florida State
3 (73). Ja’Lynn Polk, WR, Washington
3 (77). Caelen Carson, CB, Wake Forest
5 (164). Braiden McGregor, Edge, Michigan
6 (201). Will Reichard, K, Alabama
6 (205). Sione Vaki, S, Utah
7 (249). Johnny Dixon, CB, Penn State

A lot of those names should look familiar for Lions fans. Frazier, Fiske and Polk have all been common second-round names in recent Detroit projections. Selecting a kicker in the sixth would surely be a debatable point in the fanbase, as would ignoring the giant hole at offensive tackle behind starters Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell–especially in light of Decker’s recent foot surgeries (yes, plural).

None of the players selected here would be projected to start in 2024, a prevailing theme for Detroit’s championship-caliber roster.
