In a new golf sitcom, Will Ferrell will star as the ‘face of a controversial new league’, per report

This new scripted comedy does not yet have a name or a release date.

He’s frequently seen courtside at NBA and NHL games. He was on the pitch during an MLS championship celebration. He starred in a “mockumentary” on HBO in 2015 after he played nine positions for 10 baseball teams in a single day during spring training in Arizona.

He’s taken his love of sports to the big screen, portraying a NASCAR driver, a figure skater and basketball player in the movies.

Up next, Will Ferrell is reportedly going to be a golfer in a new sitcom.

According to a report by Deadline, the “series revolves around a professional golfer who becomes the face of a controversial new league competing with the PGA.”

Hmmm, sounds a lot like PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf.

Ferrell, who broke on the scene on Saturday Night Live, has primarily made movies, with sports-themed hits such as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Blades of Glory and Semi-Pro.

Since his days on SNL, Ferrell’s only significant TV role was on the Apple TV+ streaming service in a show called The Shrink Next Door.

His new scripted golf comedy does not yet have a name or a release date.

In real life, Ferrell has been active in the Cancer For Colleges Classy Golf Classic, a charity which awards college scholarships to children fighting cancer. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the charity was founded by Ferrell’s USC fraternity brother Craig Pollard. In 2022, a Florida man paid $57,000 to play with Ferrell in the charity event.

GM, Netflix and Will Ferrell? The trio make a big splash ahead of Super Bowl 57 in first teaser

A trio made possible by the wonderment of Super Bowl commercials.

General Motors is back for another Super Bowl Sunday in 2023, building on the 2021 campaign that starred Will Ferrell and focused on the car brand’s electric vehicles (EVs).

That 60-second ad, titled “No Way Norway,” had a successful stretch during the Super Bowl commercial surge in ’21, placing sixth in the Ad Meter Ratings while enjoying a post-SB week that included a Replay Ratings nod for Best Comedy ad, plus tons of internet and social media conversations—including one from Norway.

This year, one more passenger is helping guide the creative vehicle in one of the more notable initiatives that truly highlights the common cinematic theme of “life imitating art.”

Enter Netflix.

“Entertainment has a huge impact on culture. We want to make EVs famous on streaming, small and silver screens to build an EV culture through storytelling that incorporates the experiences of driving and owning an EV,” GM’s Global Chief Marketing Officer Deborah Wahl explained in a statement. “Netflix is a great partner because of the company’s compelling storytelling, commitment to sustainability and track record of sparking conversations that shape cultural trends. We are united in creating a better, more sustainable future for our world as we bring everybody in on EVs.”

Netflix’s Chief Marketing Officer Marian Lee, echoed that thinking: “At Netflix, we create shows and films that can influence culture and spark meaningful conversations,” said Lee. “From the TikTok dance trends inspired by “Wednesday” to thoughtful discussions about climate change with “Don’t Look Up,” we know that entertainment can drive fandom and inspire connections. GM is a cultural leader in the auto industry and we are proud to partner with them in their efforts by amplifying the presence of electric vehicles in our shows and films.”

General Motors. Netflix. Will Ferrell.

It’s hard to imagine such a combo, but that’s the quintessential formula for the big game ads—you never know!—and it also uncovers the worldwide demographic that will tune in on February 12…to watch the commercials.

Let’s just hope Ferrell finds a more helpful Zombie to get him back on “the 15” before then.

Will Ferrell rises to the occasion, drinks from MLS Cup after LAFC victory

Cometh the hour, cometh the man

Will Ferrell has played some characters that know how to party, and it turns out he can match them in real life.

Ferrell, an LAFC owner, drank from MLS Cup after his side came through a nutty, dramatic 3-3 draw with the Philadelphia Union to lift the trophy after a penalty kick shootout.

Ferrell stood on the pitch at Banc of California Stadium and channeled the spirit of Frank “The Tank,” his beer-loving character from the 2003 movie “Old School.” With help from the club’s star striker Cristian “Chicho” Arango, Ferrell tipped back the MLS Cup trophy to take a big swig of whatever sponsor-provided beverage was inside.

That’s expert-level partying, with Ferrell leading by example for an LAFC side that had never lifted MLS Cup before Saturday’s success.

FTW’s obscure pop culture debate: What’s the funniest song you’ve ever heard in a movie?

In which we debate The Lonely Island, Will Ferrell, more Will Ferrell and … Matt Damon?

Writing funny songs is not easy. YouTube is littered with would-be satirists who are really, truly bad at their jobs. There’s only one “Weird Al” Yankovic.

Fortunately, blending humor and music is an art form where the cream rises to the top. Every now and then, Hollywood skims from that pool and creates magic. Occasionally unintentionally, as all 110 minutes of Cats’ completely pointless run time can attest.

But while truly hilarious soundtrack songs may be outliers, the ones that exist are deployed nearly perfectly. And, because it’s July and sports news has slowed to a trickle thanks to a perfect storm of offseasons, we’ve decided to talk about it.

So what’s the funniest song you’ve ever heard in a movie?

Watch: Will Ferrell warms up with Klay Thompson as Jackie Moon before Warriors vs. Clippers

Before facing the Clippers on Tuesday, Klay Thompson and the Warriors were joined by Flint Tropic’s legend Jackie Moon during warm-ups.

Riding a season-high five-game losing streak, the Golden State Warriors pulled out all the stops to snap the slide on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers at Chase Center.

As the Warriors hit the floor for pregame warm-ups, Klay Thompson was joined by a special guest. Dressed as his iconic character Jackie Moon from the movie “Semi-Pro,” actor Will Ferell joined Thompson and the Warriors for warm-ups before facing the Clippers.

Donning a full Flint Tropics uniform, Ferrell warmed up on his own, dished passes to Thompson and even attempted to guard the five-time All-Star shooting guard during the pregame period. Ferrell ended his pregame routine with a deep 3-pointer from the logo to mirror Steph Curry.

As the Warriors were introduced to the crowd at Chase Center, Ferrell made an appearance with the team as they jogged through the tunnel onto the court before tipoff against the Clippers.

Watch all the highlights from Ferrell’s pregame appearance on Tuesday night.

See the debut, amazing trailer for HBO’s new Lakers series ‘Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty’

Whatever it is you were doing, it can wait. There is a trailer for the new Lakers project on HBO Max and it deserves your immediate attention.

Whatever it is you’re doing, it can wait. There is a trailer for the new Lakers project on HBO Max and it deserves your immediate attention.

The show, which was previously just referred to as the Untitled Lakers Project, has a name: Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. It also has a premiere date: March 2022.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a basketball fan because this is one that you’re going to want to check out the moment the series begins. Once you watch the trailer, even after just a few seconds, it won’t take long for you to figure out why.

They leaned all the way into the 1980s vibe and it looks like just the right amount of camp for easy watching every week. Plus, it looks like they are including a scene of when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar acted in Airplane! (1980):

Winning Time is produced by Academy Award-winner Adam McKay, who has directed comedies like Anchorman (2004) and dramas including The Big Short (2015). He has also produced HBO shows Succession and Eastbound & Down.

It is based on sportswriter Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.

If you were paying close attention to the trailer, you will notice some big-name actors like John C. Reilly (portraying Jerry Buss), Jason Segal (as coach Paul Westphal) and Adrien Brody (as coach Pat Riley).

While it sucks that Reilly’s casting decision hurt McKay’s relationship with Will Ferrell and it also sucks that Bo Burnham is no longer playing Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird, the rest of the cast still looks incredible and Reilly is capturing the essence of the eccentric late Lakers owner.

I’m excited to see how the newbies do in their big roles because based on what we’ve seen so far, it seems like we’ll have some new stars to fall in love with as well.

When director Adam McKay and his former …

When director Adam McKay and his former creative partner Will Ferrell broke up their production company in 2019, their longtime friendship ended too — because McKay erred on the side of “making the right casting choice over a lifelong friendship.” The comedic minds behind “Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights” and “Step Brothers” ultimately drifted apart professionally and personally over McKay’s decision not to cast Ferrell as former Lakers owner Jerry Buss for an upcoming HBO limited series.

Lakers superfan Ferrell wanted to play …

Lakers superfan Ferrell wanted to play Buss, who owned the team in the 1980s, but the comedy star wasn’t McKay’s first choice for the part. “The truth is, the way the show was always going to be done, it’s hyperrealistic,” McKay said. “And Ferrell just doesn’t look like Jerry Buss, and he’s not that vibe of a Jerry Buss. And there were some people involved who were like, ‘We love Ferrell, he’s a genius, but we can’t see him doing it.’ It was a bit of a hard discussion.” Although he didn’t want to slight Ferrell, he went on to cast his friend John C. Reilly without telling Ferrell — a move that reportedly infuriated the “SNL” veteran.
