Music played a major factor in the Super Bowl commercial lineup.

Music moves the moment, regardless if it’s an everlasting memory or a quick 30 seconds in a Super Bowl commercial.

For the latter, while the talent, twists and punchlines can make or break an ad, it’s hard to overlook the importance of what’s playing in the background.

And this year’s big game lineup certainly helped highlight that pop-cultural truth, as multiple brands turned up the music for campaigns that hit with a heavy dose of nostalgia or catchy beat that had fans singing along well after they were back from the break.

Diana Flores surprises family with Super Bowl 57 ad for the NFL

What turned out to be one of the top ad from #SuperBowl 57 was kept a bit of the secret:

Diana Flores gave her family the surprise of a lifetime.

Her name is one you likely recognized from Super Bowl 57. Flores was the star for the NFL’s game day ad, which featured during the commercial break of the Chiefs’ 38-35 win over the Eagles.

But prior to its release, Flores kept it a big secret.

The advert begins as Flores, the captain of Mexico’s women’s national flag football team, is taking part in a sideline interview with known NFL reporter Erin Andrews.

Andrews attempts to take the flag from Flores’ hip as the player is in her gameday uniform. From there, the chase is on.

The commercial follows Flores as she evades NFL players, such as Sauce Gardner and Jalen Ramsey, who are all trying to take her flag. Non-football icons appear to include tennis legend, Billie Jean King.

The commercial was so well received it earned a second-place finish in this year’s USA TODAY Ad Meter ratings with a score of 6.38.

Following the Big Game and the ad’s airing, the NFL has since shared Flores revealing her secret to her family. According to the video, Flores told them that she was going to appear in the 90-second spot for the league… not that she was going to be the star of it.

Upon finding out when viewing the ad for the first time, the emotions poured out.

The Voice of the Next Generation: The Brandcenter at VCU weighs in on the Ad Meter ratings

For the first time in Ad Meter history, we’re taking a closer look at the Super Bowl commercial ratings in the eyes of the program’s grad students.

What did the next generation of creators think about the Super Bowl 57 ads?

That’s a question many marketers and brands would probably like to know, and one that certainly piqued our interest at USA TODAY Ad Meter.

When considering the near-record 113 million viewers who tuned in for the big game—some, if not most, doing so specifically for the commercials—to get a glimpse at a focused demographic’s thoughts about the grandest stage on the advertising calendar seemed like a fun project.

Focused data isn’t the easiest to obtain these days, however, so we got lucky when the Brandcenter at Virginia Commonwealth University reached out with an idea: Have the program’s grad students watch the Ad Meter lineup, rate the ads, and provide a few thoughts about what worked and what didn’t.

The voice of a new generation, so to speak —and a great one at that.

Which ad took the top prizer? Here’s the 2023 Ad Meter Top 10

The Brandcenter at VCU is a two-year, full-time graduate program where students can concentrate on five areas of marketing-related study: Art Direction, Copywriting, Strategy, Creative Brand Management, and Experience Design.

Grads of the program earn a Master of Science degree in Business, and have gone on to work in top-tier ad agencies, like Wieden + Kennedy, Mischief, and The Martin Agency, plus well brands like Google, Apple, and Nike.

And probably most impressive, alums have been involved in some 20-plus Super Bowl commercials each year, including 2023 spots for Busch Light, DoorDash, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Rakuten, Molson Coors, Oikos Yogurt, Tubi, Pepsi Zero, Kia, Booking.com, and more.

Final thoughts as the Watch Party wrapped on Super Bowl 57:

“The ads went beyond the expected and traditional. Bringing tropes and jokes from other categories and trends was a breath of fresh air. A great example of that was Highdive’s Ram spot, “Premature Electrification.” It was a hilarious crossover from the pharmaceutical category that was unexpected, yet insightful and memorable.” – Jo Rozycki, Strategy student

Outside the lineup:

“Tubi’s ‘Rabbit Holes’ was a nice changeup when so many companies felt obligated to pack their Super Bowl commercials with star power. The slow reveal of the streaming service personified as a warren of rabbits dared the viewer to lean in and wonder what the story might be all about. It’s a simple but imaginative identifier for Tubi in a very saturated category.” – Mark McColey, Copywriting student

“Honorable mention to Anytime Fitness for their outside social campaign that had me pressing my ears to the speakers listening for the word “Anytime.” I would definitely say they successfully hacked the game this year. Even during the halftime show, I was waiting at the edge of my seat for Rihanna to sing Umbrella so I could send out a tweet. Kudos.” – Morgan MacLachlan, Art Direction student

Thanks to Ashley Sommardahl, Associate Director of the Brandcenter at VCU, for organizing the Watch Party. And a shoutout of appreciation to all the students who participated in the ratings. We look forward to seeing your work during future Super Bowl commercial breaks… and beyond.

Super Bowl Commercial Watch Party with YouTube AdBlitz: Trailers that captured attention during Super Bowl 57

Which #SuperBowl trailer had you wanting more?

As always, the Super Bowl in 2023 caught our attention and had many of us glued to the television screen for hours.

Both the Chiefs win over the Eagles and ads during Super Bowl 57 did the trick. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only time you’ll be sitting in front of screen looking for entertainment.

The BIg Game is a fantastic opportunity for movies and shows to leave a mark on us. One that, hopefully for them, make us remember to get right back in front of our screens check out these features in the near future… after we stretch our legs, of course.

Winner, winner, chicken (dog) dinner.

The Farmer’s Dog, a pet food brand, took home the top spot in the 35th year of Ad Meter’s ratings after Super Bowl 57. It earned a rating of 6.56 out of 10, edging the competition.

The spot titled “Forever” beat out the NFL’s ad “Run With It” (6.38) and Amazon’s “Saving Sawyer” (6.35) feature in the race for No. 1.

Adverts during the Big Game can take numerous directions. With their first-ever Super Bowl commercialThe Farmer’s Dog went the route of love.

The emotional spot followed the life of a girl and her best friend, a dog named “Bear.” She goes through life’s experiences from childhood to a family of her own and her pup is there, by her side, from top to bottom.

The commercial tugged at your heartstrings, as many can relate to the passion of raising a pet of their own.

Even before the Super Bowl, the teaser for the 60-second ad piled up thousands of views on YouTube AdBlitz.

After its title-winning performance on Ad Meter, it’s clear those views mounted for a good reason.

The Super Bowl commercials that missed the mark in 2023.

In the advertising world, there will always be campaigns that don’t resonate with the audience. And that scenario is magnified when it’s on the grand stage of the Super Bowl.

Each year, a handful of big game commercials don’t land the way some might have predicted or hoped, for whatever reason—timing, direction, all of it.

Ultimately, the reward is in the risk. And while these five ads didn’t have the Ad Meter ratings impact of others during Super Bowl 57, it’s still worth giving the nod of respect for the creative efforts.
