Western Michigan vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Western Michigan Will Win

The offense got its groove back.

After a strange and disappointing performance against Ball State two weeks ago, the Broncos rolled for 648 yards in a blowout win over Kent State with the ground game rolling at will.

Toledo’s offense has been strangely silent. It hasn’t been awful, but it’s struggling to get past 22 points over the last several weeks because it can’t keep the chains moving.

The Rockets are awful on third downs, they’ve had massive penalty issues all year, and they don’t have an efficient enough passing game to make up for all of the negatives.

Western Michigan’s defense is great on third downs – Toledo’s going to have a tough time moving the chains, so …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Toledo Will Win

The Toledo defense has to force takeaways.

The MAC’s No. 1 defense is good enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but it would really, really help to come up with a few takeaways to hold down the high-powered Bronco attack.

If the Rocket D that forced three takeaways to stay alive against Notre Dame, and four to dropkick UMass, can make a few big plays at home, it should be in this until the end.

Western Michigan hasn’t turned the ball over in four of its last five games, but it gave it up four times against Ball State. The pass defense is good enough to keep WMU QB Kaleb Eleby from going off, but it needs the picks.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Toledo defense is good enough to pull this off, but the team can’t get hammered with penalties and the offensive line has to do its job to help keep the chains moving.

It’ll be a close, good fight for a full four quarters, but Western Michigan will be a little sharper when it needs to be in the fourth.

Kent State vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flashes got through the rough part of the early schedule – all road losses to Power Five teams – and now the offense is rolling against the MAC.

2-0 in league play, and coming off a 48-38 win over Buffalo with 633 yards of total offense, the attack can do a little of everything.

Western Michigan has the attack that can keep up, but it clunked against Ball State thanks to four turnovers and no takeaways. Overall, the Broncos aren’t bad when it comes to turnover margin, but Kent State is third in the nation with 16 takeaways and just four mistakes.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Western Michigan Will Win

The Broncos are far better than they showed against Ball State.

The offense was fine against the Cardinals but it kept screwing up and giving the ball away. The passing attack has been consistently good, there’s enough of a ground attack to balance things out, and in this, the key will be simply keeping the chains moving.

Kent State – by its FlashFast design – likes to go really, really quickly. The yards pile up, but the O never has the ball. Western Michigan is third in the nation in time of possession – it’ll likely have the offense on the field for close to 40 minutes.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Broncos might have lost to Ball State and it has a whole lot of work ahead, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing if this turned out to be the matchup for the MAC Championship several weeks from now.

The Western Michigan offense has the ability to move the ball in a variety of ways, but it’s going to be the defense that pulls this off. It allowed more than 75 rushing yards once over the last five games – it’s not going to get gouged.

The turnovers from the Ball State game will stop, the offense will be balanced, and the time of possession different will matter.

Western Michigan Broncos College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense was a blast and it’ll be every bit as strong again. It finished 16th in the nation overall averaged 480 yards per game and was ninth in scoring as it pumped out 42 points an outing. The ground attack was solid and the downfield passing game was the best in college football, but …

– Top target D’Wayne Eskridge is now a Seattle Seahawk. He averaged over 23 yards per game with eight scores, but 6-4, 185-pound all-star Jaylen Hall returns after averaging 27 yards a pop with seven scores. 5-9 speedster Skyy Moore was second on the team with 25 catches and averaged 16 yards per catch.

The receiving corps has its veteran bomber to keep things going. Kaleb Eleby was terrific in his first year at the helm hitting 65% of his passes with 18 touchdowns and two picks, and he can run a bit, too. No. 2 Nick Kargman is also back.

The offensive front that was among the best in the nation in pass protection loses Jaylon Moore to the San Francisco 49ers, but it gets back four starters around all-star left guard Mike Caliendo.

The receivers are the stars, but the Broncos have the backs, too. 223-pound junior La’Darius Jefferson ran for a team-high 624 yards and five scores, and 5-9 scooter Sean Tayler added well over six yards per carry. Fellow speedster Jaxson Kincaide is back for his super-senior season after averaging over seven yards per carry and finishing third on the team with 218 yards.

NEXT: Western Michigan Broncos College Football Preview 2021: Defense

Western Michigan’s outrageous, 15-lateral TD was just like Cal-Stanford, except it didn’t count

Absolute chaos.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a frenzied multi-lateral play not work out for the offense this season, but what happened between Western Michigan and Ball State on Saturday was absolutely wild — even by #MACtion standards.

With 29 seconds left in the game, the Cardinals kicked a 22-yard field goal to take a 30-27 lead over the Broncos in a game with the MAC West on the line. Western Michigan’s next drive began on its own 39-yard line, and the Broncos moved up 10 yards before attempting this ridiculous touchdown attempt with just six seconds remaining.

After 13 passes back and forth, the Broncos failed to hold onto the ball, and it looked like Ball State recovered the ball. Not quite. As the Cardinals rushed the field to celebrate prematurely, the Broncos picked up the ball and continued trying to score, lightly weaving through swarms of opposing players.

Eventually, sophomore wide receiver Skyy Moore ended up with the ball again and took off for the end zone, seemingly ending this pandemonium with a game-winning touchdown. (Cut to flashbacks of Cal-Stanford in 1982.)

Absolute chaos.

But unfortunately for Western Michigan, officials overturned the touchdown and penalized the Broncos for an illegal forward pass somewhere in there. Our best guess is around the 21-second mark in the ESPN video where the ball appears to be thrown around the 32-yard line and caught near the 34-yard line. Both teams were also handed unsportsmanlike penalties.

Here’s another look at the play and doesn’t cutaway after Western Michigan dropped the ball:

Whether or not you think the Broncos were fairly penalized for an illegal forward pass, college football Twitter loved this — though no one was happy for the broadcast cutting away an a very in opportune time.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Western Michigan Broncos Offense 3 Things To Know

When the offense worked and scored, the team won. Duh – that’s how this whole thing is supposed to work – but WMU was 6-0 when it scored more than 35 points, and 1-6 when it scored fewer.

The rushing offense averaged 2-5 yards per game, the passing attack was efficient enough to get by, and there weren’t a whole lot of giveaways. Consistency, though, will be the key going forward with a group full of potential All-MAC talents.

No, the running game didn’t get better after losing LeVante Bellamy – who ran for 1,472 yards and 23 scores – but the backfield just got very, very interesting. No. 2 back Sean Tyler is back after averaging close to six yards per carry with five scores, and coming in is La”Darius Jefferson from Michigan State for more thump, and Jaxson Kincaide from Nevada for more splash.

They’ll work behind a line that gets back four starters and was excellent in pass protection and blasted away for Bellamy. Second Team All-MAC performer Mike Caliendo is the best of the bunch at left guard, and Jaylon Moore is a good one at tackle. Replacing all-star C Luke Juriga its the one blip.

All-star QB Jon Wassink is done, but Kaleb Eleby is ready to go after getting a little work in as a freshman in 2018, but redshirting last year. Backup Griffin Alstott – a former Purdue transfer – is back, too.

All-MAC TE Giovanni Ricci is done along with 50-catchWR Keith Mixon, but Skyy Moore is a dangerous playmaker coming off a team-high 51 catches for 802 yards and three scores.

Also back is D’Wayne Eskridge, who missed most of last year and might end up working as a defensive back. It’s going to be a deep overall group as the season goes on.
