Georgia walk-on DL announces transfer destination

Georgia defensive lineman Tyler Malakius has announced that he will be transferring to Western Illinois

Georgia defensive lineman Tyler Malakius has announced that he will be transferring to Western Illinois. Malakius has three years of eligibility remaining. He walked on to the team in 2019 and redshirted.

Tyler Malakius will have a much easier path to playing time at Western Illinois. Malakius, who played high school football at Westfield School, is from Byron, Georgia. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive lineman played in one game for the Bulldogs during the 2021 season, so it is understandable that he wants to get more game action.

Malakius is one of Georgia’s top walk-ons. He saw his first game action against Charleston Southern this past season and spent the 2020 season on the scout team.

Malakius had offers from UNLV, Samford and Chattanooga, but is ultimately rolling with Western Illinois.

Western Illinois plays in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. They are members of the Missouri Valley conference in football, which is one of the most difficult conferences at their level. The conference features frequent national champion North Dakota State.

Western Illinois is coming off a 2-9 season.

Why Western Illinois Will Win

The Leathernecks were able to change around with Missouri State in a 30-24 loss with the passing game doing a decent job and the defense able to come up with three takeaway. One problem (actually four) …

Turnovers. WIU kept shooting itself in the foot with four giveaways, but outside of the two picks, Connor Sampson threw relatively well, the defense did a nice job against the run, and the team had its chances.

South Dakota State hasn’t done much on the ground in the first two games and stalled after getting up 14-7 against North Dakota – losing 28-17 – but …

Why South Dakota State Will Win

North Dakota might just be the best team in the Missouri Valley Conference, and the Jackrabbits were able to come through late in a win over Northern Iowa.

Mark Gronowski might not have been the quarterback everyone was planning for, but he came through against UNI and threw for over 300 against the Fighting Hawks. The Western Illinois defensive front should have problems with RB Pierre Strong – SDSU will start to run better – and won’t have enough of a pass rush to be a bother.

What’s Going To Happen

Slow and steady will win the race. South Dakota State has the overall talent to start to breakout, and Western Illinois is the team to to it against. After two great battles, here comes the Jackrabbit offense with its best performance of the young spring season.

Missouri State (0-0) vs Western Illinois (0-0) Game Preview

Why Missouri State Will Win

It’s the fourth game under Bobby Petrino, whose team went out and got whacked 48-0 by Oklahoma and lost twice to Central Arkansas in entertaining battles in the fall of 2020.

The experience from those three games will matter.

QB Jaden Johnson didn’t throw a touchdown pass, but he has a good all-around running back in Kevon Latulas to take the pressure off, and Damoriea Vick is a potential star if the passing attack can open up a bit. The experience is there for the O line, but …

Why Western Illinois Will Win

Missouri State still has to prove it can get enough out of the offensive front to be a whole lot stronger.

It should be okay in pass protection, but the running game is going to be a massive concern and question mark early on. Western Illinois has even more work to do after a horrible 2019 and without the experience Missouri State was able to get in 2020, but it has a veteran quarterback in Connor Sampson and a few receivers who can get deep.

What’s Going To Happen

Can we please get a repeat of the three-overtime thriller – a 37-31 Missouri State win – back in 2019?

The loser of this isn’t guaranteed to finish last in the Missouri Valley, but this is one of those game that both reworking and rebounding programs need to have considering what’s next on the respective schedules.

Western Illinois will show enough improvement at home to provide some hope going forward, but Petrino’s team will come up with a big more pop on offense.
