West Virginia ended the regular season losing 4 of its last 7 games. It beat Texas Tech 78-62 in the Big 12 Tournament as a 4-point favorite before losing to the eventual West Region’s No. 1 seed in Kansas 78-61. Thanks to a late run, the Mountaineers are 17-16 against the spread (ATS) this season. They covered 5 in a row before the loss to Kansas as 3-point underdogs.

Maryland lost as a 2.5-point underdog to the Indiana Hoosiers 70-60 in the Big Ten quarterfinals after beating Minnesota 70-54, slightly covering as a 14-point fave. The Terps lost 3 of their last 4 games, yet did win 8 of their last 12 to close out the regular season. The Terrapins enter the NCAA Tournament with a 21-12 ATS record.

West Virginia vs. Maryland picks and predictions

Prediction

Maryland 70, West Virginia 67

Moneyline

PASS.

I like the Terrapins, and there is clear value as they have plus-money odds here. I would prefer to get a couple of points on the spread and would pass on the (+110) moneyline.

Against the spread

BET MARYLAND +2.5 (-115).

The Terrapins were more impressive down the stretch than the Mountaineers. West Virginia lost 4 of its last 7 games and 3 of its last 4 games on the road. It was also blasted by Kansas.

Maryland has several good wins on the season — taking down tournaments teams like Purdue, Penn State and Northwestern in its last 10 games. The strength-on-weakness should bode well for Maryland, which has an elite defense.

It ranks 24th in opponents’ points per game (63.2), according to NCAA.com. It should be able to heavily limit a West Virginia team that ranks 133rd in field-goal percentage (45.3%). The Terrapins’ defensive dominance should help it prevail.

BACK MARYLAND +2.5 (-115).

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 138.5 (-112).

Maryland has gone Under in 3 straight games and is 11-21-1 O/U on the season. It has a defense that is among the best in the nation and should be able to tame West Virginia.

The Mountaineers have gone Under in 2 straight games, both conference tournament games.  Maryland ranks 125th in defensive rebounding rate which is in the top half of the nation.

West Virginia is solid on the offensive glass, ranking 90th in the nation in offensive boards per game (11.1). The Terrapins’ strength should neutralize West Virginia, which may result in a slower game and the Under hitting. BACK UNDER 138.5 (-112).

West Virginia at Maryland odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s West Virginia Mountaineers at Maryland Terrapins odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The West Virginia Mountaineers and Maryland Terrapins will meet Saturday in the season opener at Maryland Stadium in College Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the West Virginia at Maryland odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Mountaineers meet the Terrapins for the 53rd time, and first time since a 45-6 win over Maryland in Morgantown, W.Va., Sept. 26, 2015. The Mountaineers have a slight edge in the series, 28-22-2, but they have won nine of the past 10 meetings.

The Terrapins have some question marks in the run game, but a familiar name is back to lead the pass game. QB Taulia Tagovailoa (the brother of Tua Tagovailoa) could help the Terps put up big totals, and he is helped by a solid receiving corps, too. The Achilles’ heel of UMD might be its inability to stop the run as they allowed 230.0 yards per game in 2020. The run D needs to be much, much better, or else.

West Virginia at Maryland odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

West Virginia 34, Maryland 30

Money line

WEST VIRGINIA (-150) is a decent play in this road outing as it looks to maintain its mystery against rival Maryland (+122). The Mountaineers have some question marks under center as they need more consistency from QB Jarret Doege.

However, West Va. is the play because of the presence of RB Leddie Brown. He galloped for 1,010 yards last season, while the Terps were trampled in the run game. That’s going to be the difference.

Against the spread

WEST VIRGINIA -2.5 (-120) is worth a look, although play it lightly. This game won’t get out of hand and should be a one-score game. While these teams haven’t played in a while, West Virginia is 7-2 ATS across the past nine meetings, including 4-1 ATS in the past five trips to College Park.

Over/Under

OVER 56.5 (-110) might be the most certain thing on the board. The Mountaineers like to run the ball, and the Terps struggle to stop the run. That’s good for Over bettors. In addition, the ability to get to the QB is a concern West Virginia, but that’s good news for Tagovailoa and the Maryland pass attack. This one has the potential to be a barnburner.
