Former Seahawks WR Golden Tate had a strong game in his baseball debut

Not every professional athlete who tries to switch sports finds success.

Not every professional athlete who tries to switch sports finds success. Switching to baseball certainly didn’t work out too well for Michael Jordan – perhaps the greatest competitor of all time – who only managed to hit around .200 while playing for a minor league affiliate of the White Sox.

It appears former Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate actually knows what he’s doing on the diamond, though. Tate made his debut for the Port Angeles Lefties in the West Coast League a couple days ago and it went pretty well for him. According to ESPN, Tate went 2/4 with a run and an RBI.

Golden Tate switches positions…to center field

Former wide receiver Golden Tate signed with the Port Angeles Lefties of the WCL and will play center field for the team.

Veteran NFL wide receiver Golden Tate has a new team, and a new position. Tate has decided to switch to the baseball diamond and has signed with the Port Angeles Lefties of the West Coast League. He is scheduled to start in centerfield on Tuesday night as the Lefties host the Bend Elks.

The WCL announced the news on their website on Tuesday afternoon:

Today the West Coast League’s Port Angeles Lefties announced that ex-NFL wide receiver Golden Tate has signed as a Lefties player for the remainder of the 2022 season. While Jake Locker and Jordan Poyer both played for WCL teams before their NFL careers, Tate will become the first former NFL player in the league.

As the WCL pointed out, Tate is not new to the game of baseball. During his time at Notre Dame Tate played seasons on the baseball team, and was drafted by two different MLB teams:

While at Notre Dame, Tate also played baseball for two seasons. As a sophomore, he batted .329 and scored 45 runs in 55 games. He’s been drafted twice: first out of high school by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and then out of college by the San Francisco Giants; both times he declined to sign a professional baseball contract.

Tate last played in the NFL during the 2020 season for the New York Giants. That year he played in 12 games, catching 35 passes for 388 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Some of the greatest athletes of all time played both football and baseball in their prime, including Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson. While his NFL career is now over, it seems former Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate is going to give playing professional baseball a try.

According to Dacota Haynes at Northwest Sports Desk, Tate will be making his debut later today for the Port Angeles Lefties in the West Coast League. Tate will be playing centerfield.

“While the league is making the announcement on June 14, 2022. Tate is currently listed on the roster of the PA Lefties on their official website. Tate will be making his debut for the Lefties on the 14th. The former NFL Wide Reciever played baseball at Notre Dame from 2008-2009. As well as being selected in the MLB draft twice (Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants), though he decided to pursue the NFL at the time.”

The Seahawks selected Tate in the second round of the 2010 draft. He went on to play 160 games in the NFL, totaling 695 catches, 8,278 yards and 46 touchdowns. Tate made the Pro Bowl once in 2014 and won the Super Bowl the previous season.
