Ex-Giants Wes Martin, Rysen John claimed off waivers

Former New York Giants, OL Wes Martin and TE Rysen Johnson, were claimed off of waivers on Wednesday.

The New York Giants waived four players on Tuesday — tight ends Rysen John and Jake Hausmann, linebacker Omari Cobb and offensive lineman Wes Martin.

For two of them, it didn’t take long to find new homes.

The Chicago Bears swooped in and quickly claimed John off of waivers.

John, 24, came to the Giants by way of Canada. A graduate of Simon Fraser, he was selected in the third round of the 2020 CFL draft. He also went unselected in the NFL draft that same year. In 2021, John signed with the Giants but did not make a regular season appearance.

Shortly before Chicago claimed John, it was announced that the Jacksonville Jaguars had claimed Martin.

Martin, 25, was originally a fourth-round pick of the Washington Redskins in the 2019 NFL draft. He spent the 2021 season with the Giants, appearing in seven games with one start.

Hausmann and Cobb went unclaimed and are now unrestricted free agents.

Jags add DE/OLB Rashod Berry and OL Wes Martin off waivers, waive PK Matthew Wright

The Jags had a busy day on the waiver wire Wednesday. They added two players in DE/OLB Rashod Berry and OL Wes Martin, then parted ways with Matthew Wright.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were a busy team when it came to the waiver wire Wednesday. They added two players from it in offensive lineman Wes Martin and defensive end and outside linebacker Rashod Berry. They also waived placekicker Matthew Wright, too.

Martin, 26, joins the Jags after previously spending time with the New York Giants. However, he entered the league in 2019 as a fourth-round pick from Indiana University Bloomington with the Washington Commanders. He saw a majority of his time on the field with Washington and started in 10 games for them between 2019 and 2020. Martin also registered a start last season with New York, bringing his start total to 11.

Berry, 25, entered the league in 2020 as an undrafted player with the New England Patriots. He played tight end and defensive end for Ohio State before entering the NFL Draft and stuck with playing on the defensive side as a professional player.

Berry joined the Lions last August and was active for five games with them. In the process of his time with Detroit, he saw the field for 62 snaps and recorded three tackles and a quarterback hit.

Wright, 26, joined the Jags last season in late September after former kicker Josh Lambo failed to make a field goal attempt in the Jags’ first two games. He initially was on their practice squad, but was elevated to the active roster in mid-October. During his third game on the active roster, he was able to hit a game-winning field goal for the Jags against the Miami Dolphins, giving them their first win of the season.

Wright ultimately finished the 2021 season 13-of-15 (86.7%) on extra-point attempts and was 21-of-24 (87.5%) on his field-goal attempts. He was one of three kickers on the offseason roster, but with the team moving on from him, they are now down to undrafted rookie kicker Andrew Mevis and veteran Ryan Santoso.

Giants waive TE Rysen John, three others

The New York Giants have waived four players, including tight ends Rysen John and Jake Hausmann.

In preparation for additional signings, which includes their 11-player draft class, the New York Giants did a little roster maneuvering on Tuesday.

The team officially announced that tight ends Rysen John and Jake Hausmann, linebacker Omari Cobb and offensive lineman Wes Martin have all been waived.

Martin, 25, was originally a fourth-round pick of the Washington Redskins in the 2019 NFL draft. He spent the 2021 season with the Giants, appearing in seven games with one start.

The 24-year-old Cobb signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted rookie out of Marshall in 2020. He spent more than a year with K.C. before signing with the Giants in September of last year. Cobb did not appear in a game for Big Blue.

John, 24, came to the Giants by way of Canada. A graduate of Simon Fraser, he was selected in the third round of the 2020 CFL draft. He also went unselected in the NFL draft that same year. In 2021, John signed with the Giants but did not make a regular season appearance.

The 24-year-old Hausmann initially signed with the Detroit Lions after going undrafted out of Ohio State in the 2021 NFL draft. However, he lasted just three months with the team before being waived. The Giants claimed him off waivers in August of last year but Hausmann didn’t see any action throughout the season.

Giants guards were worse than you thought in 2021

The New York Giants struggled with offensive line play in 2021, but their guards were especially detrimental to production.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The New York Giants are seeking a starting right tackle this offseason, and with the fifth and seventh overall selections in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, they’ll likely find one.

But right tackle isn’t New York’s only gaping hole on the offensive line. They actually have three others — both guard positions and center.

Come the new league year in eight days, the Giants will only have two guards under contract that are healthy (Ben Bredeson, Wes Martin) and two receiving from serious injuries (Nick Gates, Shane Lemieux).

Understandably, the Giants will be in the market for replacements and upgrades, especially considering the rancid performance of the unit last season.

The Giants also don’t have a center under contract other than Gates, and he is coming off a fractured leg that may keep him sidelined for some time, if not for posterity. That is unfortunate for him and the Giants as he was developing into a leader up front on offense.

So, that leaves the Giants looking for guards and a center on the open market. Some names to look out for are Ike Boettger, James Daniels, Connor Williams, Nate Herbig and Austin Corbett among others. Centers on the market that could interest the Giants are Mason Cole, Ryan Jensen, Bradley Bozeman and Trystan Colon-Castillo.

The Giants could be on the outside looking in on a lot of these players due to salary cap constraints which would mean they have to snag one or two in the draft.

Giants-Bears Week 17: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The New York Giants had the doors blown off them in Week 17, falling to the Chicago Bears by a score of 29-3 at Soldier Field. It was a game that ended (for the Giants) after the very first play.

It was a new low for the Giants. And that’s saying something considering how poorly the 2021 regular season has gone. Unfortunately, they’ll have one more opportunity to outdo themselves in Week 18 against the Washington Football Team.

But before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ latest humiliation.

Offensive snaps: 56
Defensive snaps: 66
Special teams snaps: 23

The Giants did a lot of rotating along the offensive line on Sunday — specifically at left guard where Wes Martin and Ben Bredeson platooned. They also frequently used a jumbo package with Derrick Kelly serving as an extra blocker.

Defensively, with Adoree’ Jackson back in action, Jarren Williams saw a significantly reduced role. Jaylon Smith also appears to be taking snaps away from other linebackers — he took 70% of all defensive snaps.

Giants sign Evan Boehm to practice squad, elevate Pharoh Cooper

The New York Giants made a series of roster moves on Thursday, including the addition of center Evan Boehm to their practice squad.

[mm-video type=video id=01fq4cdc6w1mczzdfpqq playlist_id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fq4cdc6w1mczzdfpqq/01fq4cdc6w1mczzdfpqq-be4ffa6fa9c9e004457bf49529b300a2.jpg]

The New York Giants made several transactions on Thursday facilitated by an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. Among their moves was the addition to center Evan Boehm to the practice squad.

The 28-year-old Boehm was originally a fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2016 NFL draft. He became a journeyman after that, spending time with the Los Angeles Rams (2018), Indianapolis Colts (2018), Miami Dolphins (2019, 2021), Buffalo Bills (2020), Jacksonville Jaguars (2020) and Detroit Lions (2021).

Boehm has appeared in 55 career games with 21 starts. He’s taken snaps at both left and right guard in addition to center.

The Giants also did some Reserve/COVID-19 list shuffling. Cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, who is out on Sunday, was added to the list. Offensive lineman Wes Martin was removed.

Finally, the Giants also elevated wide receiver/return man Pharoh Cooper as a COVID-19 replacement. He was a likely elevation anyway, so this permits the Giants to make additional roster moves ahead of a Week 15 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Giants’ Oshane Ximines, John Ross test positive for COVID-19

The New York Giants have two new COVID-19 positives — Oshane Ximines and John Ross — and several more close contacts.

The New York Giants placed wide receiver Kadarius Toney on the Reserve/COVID-19 list earlier this week following a positive test.

Toney’s positive result came while the Giants were flying back to East Rutherford from Los Angeles. He was immediately isolated from the team, but additional positives were expected.

On Wednesday, Giants head coach Joe Judge revealed that two more players — linebacker Oshane Ximines and wide receiver John Ross — had also tested positive.

Ross and Ximines have been isolated from the team and are likely to land on the Reserve/COVID-19 list as well.

In addition to the new positives, Judge said there had also been a number of close contacts. As a result, the team has reimplemented a mask mandate and social distancing within the building. They are also considering going back to virtual work.

The players who were deemed close contacts were not at permitted at team facilities as of Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, two other members of the organization who had previously tested positive — quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski and offensive lineman Wes Martin — are headed back to team facilities.

As the NFL deals with a league-wide COVID outbreak, more positive tests and close contacts are expected.

James Bradberry, Nate Solder among highest-graded Giants in Week 6

CB James Bradberry and OL Nate Solder were among the New York Giants’ highest-graded players in a Week 6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Los Angeles Rams blew the New York Giants out of the water in Week 6, earning a 38-11 victory at MetLife Stadium. And no, the game wasn’t as close as the final score indicates.

Half of the stadium was empty by the fourth quarter and the fans who remained were either cheering on the Rams or booing the Giants.

Generally, we try to express some level of positivity and optimism each week, but there is none left to be had. And the Pro Football Focus grades are testament to that.

Offensive tackle Nate Solder, who had a horrific game, led the Giants’ offense with a grade of 67.0 (min. 20 snaps). How he graded out so high is beyond us.

If you eliminate the minimum snap count, wide receiver Kadarius Toney led the team with a 86.4 (six snaps) and was followed up by fullback Eli Penny (71.8 on 15 snaps).

Other notable offensive grades include tight end Evan Engram (60.8), wide receiver Sterling Shepard (57.6) and quarterback Daniel Jones (35.1).

The lowest-graded Giant on offense was guard Wes Martin (23.5 and a 0.0 pass block grade). It’s the second week in a row a Giants offensive lineman earned a 0.0 in pass protection (Matt Skura the other).

Veteran cornerback James Bradberry led the defense with a grade of 81.7. He was followed up by defensive lineman Austin Johnson (77.2), safety Xavier McKinney (76.3) and defensive tackle Leonard Williams (76.3).

Other notable grades on defense include linebacker Lorenzo Carter (55.4), cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (53.3) and safety Jabrill Peppers (57.0).

The lowest-graded Giant on defense was safety Julian Love, who earned a 23.2.

Report: Giants’ Ben Bredeson could miss time with hand injury

Things have gone from bad to worse for the New York Giants as guard Ben Bredeson is expected to miss time with a hand injury.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

When it rains, it pours. And when it pours, it floods.

That’s the exact scenario the New York Giants are experiencing right now, having lost center Nick Gates (leg), guard Shane Lemieux (knee) and linebacker Blake Martinez (knee) for the season over the past two weeks.

The Giants also saw wide receivers Sterling Shepard (hamstring) and Darius Slayton (hamstring) go down hurt, joining fellow receiver Kenny Golladay, who has been bothered by a hip injury.

[lawrence-related id=675697,675693,675691]

All of this comes on the heels of several other injuries and the summer retirements of offensive linemen Joe Looney and Zach Fulton, and linebacker Todd Davis.

Those issues have left the Giants thin at three positions and the one with the most issues — offensive line — may get even thinner.

Jordan Raanan of ESPN reports that guard Ben Bredeson, who who was acquired from the Baltimore Ravens in late August, may miss some time due to a hand injury.

With Bredeson now likely out, the Giants will be forced to move Will Hernandez back to left guard or plug Wes Martin, who was signed off of the Washington Football Team’s practice squad earlier this week, into the spot alongside left tackle Andrew Thomas.

Either way, the Giants will run their fourth different offensive line combination this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints and their fourth different guard next to Thomas this season.

Who could have ever guessed the Giants had interior offensive line depth issues entering this season? Certainly not general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Joe Judge.

Giants sign guard Wes Martin off Washington’s practice squad

Wes Martin was a fourth-round pick in 2019 who failed to hold down a starting spot in 2020.

The New York Giants signed guard Wes Martin off the Washington Football Team’s practice squad on Monday.

Martin, a fourth-round pick in 2019, appeared in 25 games for Washington, with 10 starts in 2019-20. He began the 2020 season as Washington’s starter at left guard, replacing Ereck Flowers, who left in free agency.

After five games, Martin was replaced by Saahdiq Charles, who was quickly injured. Instead of turning back to Martin, Washington’s coaches went with veteran Wes Schweitzer, who started the rest of the season.

Martin was a part of Washington’s final cuts at the end of training camp but was quickly re-signed to the practice squad. Washington protected Martin in Week 1 but did not the last two weeks.

Martin replaces Nick Gates on New York’s roster, who injured his leg in the Week 2 meeting between Washington and the Giants.
