Wenyen Gabriel and South Sundan win their 2024 Olympics opener

South Sudan defeated Puerto Rico 90 – 79 to open the 2024 Olympics.

Former Kentucky basketball players got off to a good start at the 2024 Olympics with wins by Canada and Team USA, which feature three former Cats apiece. However, South Sudan also features a starter who played in Lexington in Wenyen Gabriel.

On Sunday, South Sudan opened up their Olympics run with a victory over Puerto Rico 90 – 79. Five members scored in double figures, and Gabriel was not one of them. However, he contributed in multiple ways.

Gabriel, who spent two seasons with the Wildcats, scored just six points. However, he also added a team-high nine rebounds, and recorded two assists, two blocks, and a steal.

Next up for South Sudan is a rematch with Team USA. They faced each other in a showcase game on July 20th, and game them all they could handle. Team USA managed a one point win 101 – 100, but it was a good one. The rematch will be on July 31st and can be watched on the USA Network and Peacock.

Boston cuts DJ Steward, Jay Scrubb, Wenyen Gabriel; what’s next for the Celtics?

Potential options for the open two way contract slot are likely being explored by the team’s front office, and the Celtics could elect to go into the start of the 2023-24 NBA season with an open roster spot for flexibility and cap savings.

The Boston Celtics made some minor waves in the NBA media sphere this week by releasing former Duke point guard DJ Steward, two way wing Jay Scrubb, and former Los Angeles Lakers big man Wenyen Gabriel, while ex-Cleveland Cavaliers swingman Lamar Stevens remains on the team for the moment. What does this tell us about their plans for the season ahead?

Potential options for the open two way contract slot are likely being explored by the team’s front office, and the Celtics could elect to go into the start of the 2023-24 NBA season with an open roster spot for flexibility and cap savings — or they could scoop up one of the many fringe players currently trying to find a home for the season ahead right now in the league’s version of musical chairs.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics” podcast sat down to think over what Boston might do on a recent episode.

Boston Celtics reportedly waive big man Wenyen Gabriel

Gabriel was on a non-guaranteed deal with Boston.

The Boston Celtics have elected to waive reserve big man Wenyen Gabriel ahead of the NBA’s 2023-24 regular season per multiple reports. Gabriel, a four-year NBA veteran, spent last season with the Los Angeles Lakers and had decent stats with 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per game with the Lakers.

The South Sudanese big man joined the Celtics during their 2023 training camp, but despite the team’s frontcourt depth taking a hit in the trade for All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday when the team sent center Robert Williams III to the Portland Trail Blazers, Gabriel received only a non-guaranteed contract with no assurances beyond the preseason.

Ultimately, he was outperformed by two-way player Neemias Queta, who looks like a player Boston may consider offering a full roster spot to on the strength of his own preseason play with the Celtics.

New Boston Celtics big man Wenyen Gabriel career NBA highlights

Many fans of the team are entirely unaware of Gabriel’s game on both ends of the court.

The Boston Celtics had to trade away beloved center Robert Williams III in order to land former Milwaukee Bucks All-Star guard Jrue Holiday, leaving the ball club with a thin proven frontcourt rotation as a result. But the Celtics also elected to sign free agent big man Wenyen Gabriel to the team this offseason in the hopes that the South Sudanese center could help shore up that rotation until the playoffs.

Will he be able to fill in at least during the 2023-24 regular season to save the legs of oft-injured Kristaps Porzingis and veteran big man Al Horford?

Many fans of the team are entirely unaware of Gabriel’s game on both ends of the court.

To that end, we have included a highlight clip of the best of his play over the course of his four-season NBA career.

How much floor time will Wenyen Gabriel get with the Boston Celtics in 2023-24?

Despite being well under a 7-footer, Gabriel is expected to fill in some of the minutes left behind by the departure of big man Robert Williams III.

How much floor time will Wenyen Gabriel get with the Boston Celtics in 2023-24? Gabriel recently expressed his enthusiasm for being in Boston at the Celtics’ 2023 Media Day after spending time with the team during the summer. The South Sudanese center played a career-high 68 games last season, showcasing his ability to contribute as a hustle player who does all the little things for their team.

Despite being well under a 7-footer, Gabriel is expected to fill in some of the minutes left behind by the departure of big man Robert Williams III. Some even believe he could have a similar impact on the defensive end of the ball as Timelord, albeit with a different style and greater availability.

The hosts of the CLSN Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast took a deep dive into his game on a recent episode.

Former Lakers big man Wenyen Gabriel is joining the Celtics

A Lakers fan favorite is now getting a shot at cracking the rotation of the team’s arch-rivals back East.

During the disastrous 2021-22 season, the Los Angeles Lakers had a glaring lack of depth, especially at both forward positions. It was a major factor in them missing the play-in tournament that season, which rendered the previous offseason’s Russell Westbrook trade a failure.

Late in the campaign, Los Angeles picked up free agent big man Wenyen Gabriel. He played the rest of the year and all of last season with the team. Although he is undersized, at 6-foot-9 and 205 pounds, he always gave 100%, which especially helped him on the boards.

During the 2022-23 season, Gabriel averaged 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15.1 minutes a game.

Now, with training camp about to start, Gabriel signed a deal to join the Lakers’ archrivals, the Boston Celtics.

Gabriel joins a new-look Celtics team that is bringing in borderline All-Stars Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday while giving up Malcolm Brogdon, Marcus Smart, Robert Williams III and Grant Williams. It badly needs depth, and Gabriel should help a bit.

Shams: Boston Celtics sign big man Wenyen Gabriel to training camp deal

With the Celtics having dealt away longtime big man Robert Williams III, Gabriel will be playing for a position of considerable need for Boston next season.

The Boston Celtics have reportedly signed unrestricted free agent big man Wenyen Gabriel to a non-guaranteed training camp deal according to new reporting from The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Per Charania, “Gabriel is finalizing a deal with the Boston Celtics” and “Gabriel, who averaged 5.5 PPG and 4.2 RPG for (the Los Angeles) Lakers last season, will compete for a reserve big man spot in Boston.”

The Athletic NBA insider also notes that the former Lakers center’s “strong play for South Sudan in the FIBA World Cup this summer helped secure the team’s first-ever spot in the 2024 Olympics.”

“Gabriel averaged 9.2 points and 6.8 rebounds for South Sudan and has worked out for the Celtics in Boston in recent weeks,” notes Charania.

With the Celtics having dealt away longtime big man Robert Williams III, Gabriel will be playing for a position of considerable need for Boston next season.

There, he will join potential two way big man Neemias Queta as potential options to help eat minutes for the Celtics during the regular season.

Lakers 2022-23 season player grades: Wenyen Gabriel

A final look at Wenyen Gabriel’s performance for the Lakers this season.

Last season, the Los Angeles Lakers were in desperate need of serviceable wings and forwards, so they took a flyer on Wenyen Gabriel, a 6-foot-9 man who had played 58 games total dating to the 2019-20 campaign.

Gabriel was undrafted and had bounced around the league playing for five teams. But he started to find a home with the Purple and Gold.

This season, he kept his place in the rotation for much of the campaign. Although he’s lacking in skills and strength, he made up for it in the effort department, and he made an important contribution.
