NFC West standings: Rams gain ground as only team that won in Week 6

The Rams were the only NFC West team to win in Week 6, so they inched closer to the 49ers and Seahawks in the division

The Los Angeles Rams came out of Week 6 with a victory, which is more than the other three teams in the division can say. They were the only team in the NFC West to win on Sunday, improving their record to 3-3 on the year.

The division now has three teams at or above .500, but what’s important for the Rams is that they gained ground on the two teams ahead of them in the standings.

To recap Week 6, the Rams beat the Arizona Cardinals, 26-9, at home. It wasn’t the cleanest game from start to finish, with Los Angeles scoring just six points before halftime, but the offense came alive in the final 30 minutes and scored 20 unanswered to beat the Cardinals.

Elsewhere, the San Francisco 49ers were stunned by the Cleveland Browns on the road. The 49ers led that game 10-0 in the first half but went ice cold in the second half and scored just seven points in the final two and a half quarters. The Browns, meanwhile, outscored San Francisco 19-7 the rest of the way to win at home, 19-17.  The 49ers had a chance to win but Jake Moody missed a 41-yard field goal wide right with 9 seconds left, which would’ve won the game for San Francisco.

Then there were the Seattle Seahawks, who also lost on the road to the Cincinnati Bengals. They were beaten, 17-13, scoring just one touchdown in the game, which came midway through the first quarter. The Seahawks’ last two possessions ended on failed fourth-down conversions, failing to mount a comeback.

Here’s how the NFC West looks after six weeks:

  1. 49ers: 5-1 (next: at MIN)
  2. Seahawks: 3-2 (next: vs. ARI)
  3. Rams: 3-3 (next: vs. PIT)
  4. Cardinals: 1-5 (next: at SEA)

It’s still a bit early in the season to look at the playoff picture, but the Rams are in good shape. At 3-3, they currently hold the seventh seed in the NFC, owning a tiebreaker over the Commanders, Falcons and Saints, who have the same record.

With a long way to go, the Rams still have plenty of work to do. But with no unbeatens left and teams such as the Seahawks, Commanders, Buccaneers and Falcons losing, the Rams gained some ground on the conference.

Studs and Duds from Tampa Bay’s loss to the Detroit Lions

There were more duds than studs in this matchup, that’s for sure.

Sometimes, a game will give you more studs than duds, and others, more duds than studs. We can definitely say that this game falls into the latter category.

The Bucs lost 20-6 to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, and although the team’s throwback uniforms looked good, that was about the only thing. Tampa Bay’s defense held up fine given the circumstances, but the offense turned in a dreadful performance that it will want to forget — and one that it may have to if it wants to be competitive with other teams this season.

Here are Bucs Wire’s studs and duds from Sunday’s throwback matchup:

Social media reacts to Tampa Bay’s 20-6 loss to the Detroit Lions

The Bucs’ futile offense and lack of physicality were a big reason they lost against the Lions, and social media took notice.

It was a rough one for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so naturally, the internet had opinions on it.

The Bucs lost 20-6 against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, falling to 3-2 on the season. The game was the team’s second against one of the NFC’s best football teams, and it went a similar way the last one did — losing a physical ballgame without a lot of offense. In particular, the run game struggled, and that was a point of emphasis among social media commentators all night. The Bucs will now look to defeat the Atlanta Falcons next week to try and take hold of the NFC South.

Here are some social media reactions from Bucs fans, pundits and neutral observers:

6 takeaways from Rams’ Week 6 win over Cardinals

Here’s what we learned from the Rams’ 26-9 win over the Cardinals, which featured a dominant showing by LA in the second half

The Los Angeles Rams got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon with a victory over the Arizona Cardinals in their first of two meetings this season. The Rams dominated in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 20-0, but Arizona held a 9-3 lead late in the first half before Los Angeles finally woke up.

Los Angeles is now 3-3 on the year and just two games back of the San Francisco 49ers, so the team’s playoff hopes are very much alive after six weeks. And with Cooper Kupp looking like his usual self, the Rams are in great shape leaving Week 6.

Here are six key takeaways from Sunday’s victory at SoFi Stadium, a convincing 26-9 win.

Instant analysis as Jets pull the upset, finally score a victory over Eagles

Game notes and three stars as the Jets get the upset, finally defeat the Philadelphia Eagles.

The donut is finally gone. The Jets are no longer 0-for-forever against the Philadelphia Eagles. A late touchdown off of a Tony Adams interception helped the Jets pull the upset of the previously undefeated Eagles by a score of 20-14 and record their first win ever in the regular season over the Eagles. The Jets had previously been 0-12 against Philadelphia.

Scoring a win over the Eagles and getting to 3-3 heading into their bye week, with all that happened with injuries and the schedule they faced, the Jets are on cloud nine right now. Here’s our game notes from New York’s major win.

Bucs don’t know how to shine, drop game vs. Lions 20-6

An entirely futile offense was the prevailing factor in Tampa Bay’s second loss of the season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers threw it back to the 1970s on Sunday — in the worst of ways.

The Bucs lost their game on Sunday to the Detroit Lions 20-6, giving Tampa Bay its second loss of the season and first loss to the NFC North. Both of the Bucs’ losses have been at home this year, the first coming against the Philadelphia Eagles.

A futile offense was to blame, putting up just six points over four quarters. It was a pedestrian day for the entire unit, with quarterback Baker Mayfield throwing for just 206 yards on 37 attempts and Tampa Bay’s leading receiver in Chris Godwin only managing 77 yards (a chunk of which were in garbage time). The team’s run game was particularly dreadful, averaging only 2.9 with the team’s leading rusher in Rachaad White managing only 26. The Bucs were left without a touchdown across the game, the only game so far that such a thing has occurred.

Overall, the defense was good, holding a normally explosive Lions team to just 20 points on the day and holding in the red zone. The lack of offensive prowess left the defense tired, however, and the Lions took advantage after being stifled for just 10 points in the first half. Detroit scored two touchdowns, once on a third and long pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown for 27 yards and a deep ball to Jameson Williams for 45 yards. The team was particularly spited by 3rd and 10-plus scenarios, giving up over three over the course of the whole game.

The Bucs fall to 3-2 but still remain atop the NFC South, as the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons both lost their games on Sunday as well. Tampa Bay’s next opponent will be against the Atlanta Falcons at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Bucs are donning their classic Bucco Bruce decor to play an old NFC Central rival in the Detroit Lions, and the game could have ramifications for the end of the season. Both teams have one loss, are at the top of the division and have defeated two teams from the other’s division, so Sunday’s contest could be a fun one and both teams would benefit massively from a win.

Bucs inactives list for Week 6 vs. Lions

With OLB Shaquil Barrett set to play, the Bucs only have one player inactive due to injury on Sunday.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers inactives list has been released and to the sure delight of the team and the fans,  it’s a short one.

This game will mark the first game active for Bucs OLB Markees Watts, who will be needed for depth reasons with the absence of Nelson.

Here’s the full inactives list for Tampa Bay:

Saints shake up their offensive line with two new starters vs. Texans

Saints shake up their offensive line with two new starters vs. Texans

The New Orleans Saints shook up their offensive line with two new starters in Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans: James Hurst at left tackle and Max Garcia at left guard. Hurst had been starting at guard but poor performance by left tackle Trevor Penning prompted the coaching staff to make a change.

Garcia getting the starting nod is a little odd. Andrus Peat had been expected to start at his old left guard spot with Hurst moving to tackle, but a groin strain injury held him out of practice on Friday and likely impacted this decision. Peat was active on Sunday so the coaching staff must have believed he would be healthy enough to play in a pinch, but not to start an entire game.

It’s an odd choice to shake up the line this much coming off a 34-0 shutout win where the offense finally seemed to get its act together. But head coach Dennis Allen doesn’t have the luxury of time on his side, and he can’t wait for Penning to develop into a reliable starter at left tackle. Allen’s team had to fight and claw its way to a poor 7-10 finish last season and the 3-2 record he took into Week 6 on Sunday was the best of his career to this point in the season. Hopefully Penning can watch and learn and still turn into a player who can help this offense.

Chiefs K Harrison Butker says he could’ve made a 65-yard field goal vs. Broncos

#Chiefs K Harrison Butker says he could’ve attempted a 65-yard field goal in Thursday night tilt vs. #Broncos

The Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Denver Broncos on Thursday night was due in large part to their stellar play on defense. A significant portion of the praise goes to kicker Harrison Butker for contributing 13 of the team’s 19 points, including a 60-yard field goal.

Butker opened up about his big night during the postgame press conference, revealing his ability to make kicks from even farther.

“In warmup, I made a 65-yarder with some room to spare, and Coach [Dave] Toub loves banging big field goals at the end of the half or end of the game, but our offense is so good, we normally get a short field goal or even score a touchdown,” said Butker. “So a 60-yarder, definitely a 61-yarder was in our range, and going towards that tunnel, the wind was at my back. And you know, thankfully, it just went inside that left upright went through. And you know, it’s just something we practice, and we try to be the best we can leading up to the game so that when we get to the games, it just feels smooth and like we’re in a rhythm.”

Butker going 4 for 4 was important after his struggles last season following his ankle injury.

“You know, I don’t try to kick a ton of balls in the warmup, so like in past seasons, I’d go back to 70, 72, 74 yards and see what my max was, but this game you know, I made from 65. OK, I probably could make from 68, 69 or something with the wind, but yeah, I made 65 in the warmup.”
