What’s Going To Happen

Appalachian State can lock up the Sun Belt East title with a win over a Texas State that’s lost four of its last five games.

The Mountaineers overcame the loss to Georgia Southern with two straight wins, but just finishing the regular season 11-1 – needing to beat Troy next week to do that – and isn’t enough. They want another Sun Belt title, and they want to stay in the race for the Group of Five champion’s New Year’s Six bowl slot.

That shouldn’t be an issue against a Bobcat team that’s can’t run the ball and just don’t score enough.

To beat Appalachian State, a Sun Belt team has to be able to grind a bit, crank up third down conversions, and win the turnover margin. TXST can’t do anything of those things.

ASU won’t rub it in, but they’re looking impress the College Football Playoff committee. It’ll put up a big number.

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State is bowl eligible, but now it’s time to cement a spot before finishing up with the rivalry date with Georgia Southern. South Alabama is just looking for win – it hasn’t beaten an FBS team yet.

The Jaguar team isn’t coming up with third down conversions, and the offense as a whole isn’t doing anything consistently well scoring just 17 points per game.

Georgia State’s defense is getting broadest, and it can’t stop the run, and USA can move the ball just well enough on the ground to keep things moving.

Panther QB Dan Ellington is fishing through a torn ACL and keeps on playing, but the pats around him will work.

Tra Barnett will run for well over 100 yards as the Panthers control the clock and the game from the start. USA won’t be able to close out enough drives with points.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a strange year for both 3-7 teams.

Houston is 3-7, but it’s been a massive underachiever and disappointment after bad start, and with nothing happening over the last few weeks with three straight losses to the league’s stars.

Tulsa has a bad record, but it’s played a nasty slate – there’s a shot that all ten teams it has played so far will end up going bowling. However, it was able to get by UCF two weeks ago.

The Golden Hurricane don’t have a pass rush, the offensive line has a hard time keeping good defenses out of the backfield, and the offensive consistency isn’t there, but the attack is able to control the clock and it can keep up the pace in shootouts.

Houston’s defense isn’t even close lately, especially against the decent passing teams. It has allowed two touchdown passes or more in every game, it’s getting bombed on for ten yards per pass over the last few outings, and it’s about to get rocked by Zach Smith for close to 300 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Cincinnati’s chance to win the East title, and it’s Temple’s shot to make this really, really fun.

Here’s the deal. If UC wins, it’s the East champ and it’s off to play Memphis next week and then likely against – although it’s hardly a lock – in the AAC Championship.

If Temple wins, then all it has to do is beat UConn next week and then hope Memphis can beat the Bearcats … and hope for a UCF loss in the last two games.

The Owls haven’t been all that consistent, but the offensive line has been terrific, the defensive line lives in the backfield, and there’s been just enough offense to win its last two games to get back into title contention. However, it’s had a bit of an issue with turnovers, and the Bearcats are great at forcing them.

UC has allowed 17 points or fewer in three of the last four games. It’s going to step up in the final home game of the year and keep the Owl offense from going on enough long marches. Temple isn’t good enough on third downs, and it’ll be the death blow.

Cincinnati will throw better on the way to the division title.

What’s Going To Happen

Memphis can’t clinch the West title this week, but it come awfully close. Win this week and against Cincinnati, and it’s playing for the AAC title.

Lose this, and then beating UC is a must. Win this, and it can afford a loss to the Bearcats if the winner of the SMU-Navy game loses next week.

Basically, Memphis could use a win over USF.

The Bulls have lost two straight, and now they have to come up with a win over MU and win at UCF to be bowl eligible.

The team has had its moment over the second half of the year – helped by a win over BYU – but it lost three of its last four against the AAC elite. In the home finale, it has to handle the Tiger passing game that keeps going off.

USF has yet to allow 300 year this year, and it’s been solid overall, but can the O keep up? Memphis has one of the nation’s most efficient passing games for an offense averaging 42 points per game.

The USF offensive line isn’t good enough to establish anything consistently strong. The D will come up with a few takeaways to keep this from getting out of hand, but the O simply won’t be able to keep up.

This is where the American Athletic Conference West race gets good.

Navy and SMU both lost to Memphis – the loser of this game is out of the West title hunt.

The winner needs to win its final game, and it needs Memphis to lose one of its last two games against USF and Cincinnati,

Step One for both of them – just win this.

SMU’s offense is averaging 45 points per game with a high-powered passing game that keeps on pushing the ball down the field, but also gets help from Xavier Jones and the running game. The Doak Walker semifinalist has rushed for 18 scores, but it’s the other side of the ball that’s going to have to get the job done.

Can the Mustangs hold down the Navy running game?

Notre Dame was able to do it to a point in the 52-20 win – allowing just 281 yards to the nation’s top attack that’s been pushing 400 yards every week late in the season – and only TCU have been able to hit the 200-yard mark against the Mustangs.

Ian Book and the Irish picked apart a Navy secondary that’s about to be in for a long day. The pass rush and pressure from the SMU defensive front will be enough to stall the Midshipmen ground attack once in a while. That will be just enough to get by.

East Carolina hasn’t been winning, but it’s been a whole lot of fun.

It pushed SMU really, really hard … and lost late.

It pushed Cincinnati really, really hard … and lost late.

The offense has found its passing game with Holton Ahlers throwing or well over 1,000 yards in the last two games with ten touchdowns. And now he’s going to bomb away on the UConn defense.

Teams are usually running the ball on the Huskies, but it’s possible to keep pushing the ball on a secondary that’s among the least effective in college football. There’s not enough of a pass rush to bother Ahlers, but the offense should be able get running on the porous Pirate defensive front.

Expect another fun East Carolina, but this time it won’t come down to the final play. And this time, it’ll finally get a win.

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t going to be another New Year’s Six bowl season for UCF, and it’s coming off an embarrassing loss to Tulsa, but it has had two weeks off to rest up with a shot to still get to a ten-win season by winning out.

The Knights are still potent, and they’re still explosive, but the defense hasn’t been the killer of the last few seasons.

It has to handle a Tulane offense that’s been terrific at times – the Green Wave were able to beat Tulsa – but stalled on the road at Temple.

At home, TU is 5-0 scoring 38 points or more in every game.

UCF will get the deep passing game going from the start – that’s been Tulane’s slight issue. It only played one team that can bomb away, and it lost to Memphis by 30 when Brady White went off.

With the extra two weeks to recharge, this will be a different Knight team that’s able to stop the big pass plays it’s had so many problems with at times over the second half of the year.

Nevada is bowl eligible after stunning San Diego State two weeks ago, but Fresno State is a desperate team needing to win its final two games to get eligible.

The Bulldogs were supposed to be in for a rebuilding season, and it has shown all year long with a shaky defense and not enough of an offensive pop to make up for the issues on the other side.

Nevada’s offense hasn’t done much of anything over the second half of the season – scoring 21 points or fewer in five of the last six games – but it’s been able to find ways to get by against the bad teams.

At home, a desperate Fresno State team will start to get the running game going.

The Wolf Pack don’t have the pass rush to get into the backfield, and it’ll get powered on just enough for the Bulldogs to start playing like they were expected to a few weeks ago.

Fresno State will be a +2 in turnover margin, capitalizing on all the mistakes to set up a date against San. Jose State for a shot at going to a bowl.
