5 Bold predictions for the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving

Four bold predictions for the Detroit Lions as they host the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day.

The Detroit Lions are preparing for their second bout with the Chicago Bears this season, hoping for a much better outcome than last time.

Detroit has had quite the season so far, holding a lead in each of their 11 games but sitting at the bottom of their division at 3-7-1. With an injury-plagued roster and some recent struggles on defense, can the Lions turn it around in their prime time matchup?

Here are my bold predictions for this week’s game:

Quarterback change-up changes nothing

With rookie David Blough getting his first career start while both Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel deal with their injuries, don’t think that we’ll see anything new on offense.

Driskel’s tenure as the Lions’ starting quarterback wasn’t exactly noteworthy, with four touchdowns and just as many interceptions in three games. While he and Blough are very different passers, don’t think that this will change things up on offense.

Blough is an undrafted rookie who’s first regular-season action comes in a major prime time game. Though he has been with the team since the beginning of the season, don’t think his play will be any better than what we’ve seen in recent weeks.

While we’ll see a much different style of play from Blough than the other two Lions quarterbacks, don’t expect anything new.

Amani Oruwariye will make another interception

In his first game as a starter, filling in for the injured Rashaan Melvin, Oruwariye proved to be more capable than many expected. In the loss to Washington, the rookie pulled off an impressive interception on a pass from Dwayne Haskins.

Bears’ quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has thrown six interceptions so far this season and will be down three offensive weapons on Thanksgiving Day. I think the rookie will be able to keep the momentum going from last week and capitalize on this opportunity.

There will be a dearth of yellow flags

There were 20 flags thrown the last time these two teams faced each other, but that may not be the case this time around.

Jerome Boger and his crew will be officiating this game. This is a crew that hasn’t called more than 12 penalties in a game in 2019, so this could bode well for the Lions. Detroit only committed six penalties last week, so it appears that some of their discipline issues have been resolved.

Hockenson will re-emerge in the offense

After a fairly quiet season, Hockenson may be able to rediscover his place in the passing game. He had three receptions for 47 yards against Chicago earlier this year.

Can he put on a similar performance this week? I hope so.

The Detroit Lions will come out with a win

Usually, predicting a victory isn’t considered a bold prediction, but that’s not the case for this team.

Detroit is itching for a win amidst a four-game losing streak. The Bears aren’t in a much better situation at the moment, so this game could be an interesting one.

The Lions defense has shown some improvement since their last game against Chicago. Their run game has been revived with the emergence of Bo Scarborough. The only liability is the quarterback situation. If the defense and the offensive line can hold up, the Lions will be able to overcome and snap their losing streak.

Even Jason Garrett can use these analytics showing who the Bills really are

A look into how the Bills have accomplished their 8-3 record, whether it’s fool’s gold or legitimate, and what Josh Allen is doing so well.

Despite it being the week of Thanksgiving, Sunday’s result didn’t leave Cowboys fans with a feeling of gratitude. The field became a quagmire in the midst of a nasty rainstorm, and it made life difficult for both quarterbacks and offenses. To this point in the season, the Dallas offense has been more reliant on Dak Prescott’s ability to make plays, and thus the weather better served the New England defense as it mitigated Prescott’s potential impact.

Games like Sunday’s contest demonstrate the importance of having every possible edge a team can find. Uncontrollable elements like the weather can level a matchup in unexpected ways, and thus its important to maximize the value of your own decision-making. In light of this loss, and perhaps with the rise of the Baltimore Ravens, Jason Garrett has come under scrutiny for the lack of usage of analytics in the team’s decision-making. Baltimore is the latest team to grab headlines for this usage, but New England has been at the forefront for the majority of their dynastic run and now Dallas will face another analytically-inclined franchise in the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo comes to town holding an 8-3 record, and the top Wild-Card spot in the AFC. Due to historic-level production, the New England and San Francisco defenses have garnered the attention of most headlines. But the Buffalo defense has played a significant role in their record to this point.

The truth, however, is that they’ve likely benefited from some weaker offenses.

Here we see the EPA per play that a defense has allowed (Y-axis) vs the EPA per play the offenses generated against other teams (X-axis).

The idea is to compare a team’s defensive production against their quality of competition.

And as you can see, Buffalo’s opponents have been quite abysmal overall. In fairness, Buffalo has performed well against those opponents. But its safe to say that their defense has been largely untested. The Dallas offense should theoretically give a better indication of what Buffalo’s defense is capable of achieving.

Because their opponents have been so appalling, it’s hard to glean what’s real from Buffalo’s defensive statistics. However, a player worth noting is cornerback Tre’Davious White and his lock-down potential.

According to Pro-Football-Reference, White has allowed a 47.9 passer rating on passes his way, ranked second among all cornerbacks. He’s a player who’s shown the capability of shadowing a team’s top wide receiver, so it should be interesting to see how Buffalo chooses to deploy him.

On the opposite side of the ball, it’s hard not to talk about the Buffalo Bills without talking about their young quarterback, Josh Allen. It seems fitting Allen comes to town in a week where analytics was featured as a prominent discussion point. Entering last year’s draft, Allen was the prototypical case in skills vs stats. From a physical standpoint, it’s hard not to be wowed by his talent, as he blends an unprecedented amount of arm strength and mobility. Despite this though, things never quite came together at Wyoming, and many wondered whether Allen’s physical tools would translate to success on the NFL field.

Allen put these physical tools on display immediately as a rookie, but we also saw his rawness play a role. That said, Allen’s development as a quarterback is rather impressive when you observe his Next-Gen passing charts from 2018 and 2019.

In his rookie campaign, it was clear how much Allen believed in his arm, as he routinely attacked downfield, and found great success attacking the seams. He did, however, struggle to attack the perimeter of the field. But in 2019, we see Allen utilizing the entire field, without really sacrificing much of his downfield shots. It’s almost downright laughable that Allen has the ability to uncork a pass to any point on this chart. As a defense, it means having to defend every level on a given play, and can prove costly if there’s a lapse in focus.

Arm strength of Allen’s caliber is certainly rare, but it’s the combination of strength and mobility that truly sets Allen apart. Common sense would dictate players should be keenly aware of their strengths, and stick to those as much as possible. This is certainly the case with Allen, as no quarterback has relied more heavily on his legs this year.

The chart above shows that about 12% of Allen’s successful plays have come due to his rushing ability, while about 9% of his dropbacks resulted in a scramble overall. While Allen has shown development as a passer, he still likes to use his legs, and can certainly do so if unaccounted for by the defense.

Buffalo’s schedule to this point may have inflated their overall record, but they’re still dangerous enough to cause trouble for a team, especially on a short week. Dallas will need to regroup quickly if they hope to avoid an unpleasant Thanksgiving. But with a holiday game, the eyes of America will be tuned in, and that presents a unique opportunity for Dak Prescott to vault forward in the MVP discussion.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: Week 13 Preview

Lions Wire’s weekly examination of what happened in fantasy football last week and a look forward at what to watch in the upcoming week.

As fantasy football owners we all have a multitude of things to be thankful for. Maybe you are thankful for drafting Dalvin Cook, Christian McCaffrey, or Michael Thomas high in your fantasy drafts. Or, maybe you took some sage advice (wink-wink), waited to draft a quarterback and then snagged Lamar Jackson with one of your late-round picks.

Hopefully, you are thankful when you look at the standings in your fantasy league and you have more wins than losses. If you haven’t been derailed by injuries or bad roster moves, please be thankful.

As we turn the page to Thanksgiving and the fantasy playoffs, let’s take a look at Week 13 in the National Football League.

Bears at Lions fantasy focus

Football at 12:30 pm on Thanksgiving is a tradition in Detroit. Often it doesn’t matter what the Detroit Lions record is headed into this game they often seem to play well on this big day where they have the national stage. I don’t see this year being any different.

The Lions have had a tough season and have been riddled by injuries all year. They are starting their backup quarterback, a running back they found a couple weeks ago, and a defense that has been missing key pieces all year as well. For all these reasons, I feel they will come out and play one of their better games this season. They will give us something to cheer about right before the turkey comes out of the oven.

Fantasy players to watch in this one are Bo Scarbrough (RB Lions), Allen Robinson (WR Bears), Danny Amendola (WR Lions), David Montgomery (RB Bears), and Tarik Cohen (RB Bears). Don’t be surprised if the Lions pull out a couple of trick plays and change up their defensive schemes to try to get a win in this game that we are all so thankful to have in Detroit.

Now What

This might be the final week you have to either make or miss the playoffs. If so, do all you can to score one more point than your opponent and hope you don’t have a crucial injury that costs you the week. Do all you can to win, as that is all that matters, but also enjoy these last few weeks of fantasy football.

I hope you enjoy this great holiday. Family, food, and football. It doesn’t get much better than that. We all have many things to be thankful for. Be thankful if you didn’t draft Odell Beckham (WR Browns), Joe Mixon (RB Bengals), and Kerryon Johnson (RB Lions) in most of your leagues like I did.

In all seriousness though, this is the time of year where we all count our blessings and remember to be grateful. Please cherish the time you have with those close to you this Thanksgiving. Indulge in homemade food and as always please enjoy both your football and fantasy football this holiday season.

Falcons LT Jake Matthews talks about team’s offensive line issues

Atlanta lost the momentum it had built during its two-game winning streak when the team gave up six sacks in an embarrassing loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Falcons are now 3-8 entering their prime-time Thanksgiving matchup with the Saints. Jake Matthews, the team’s veteran left tackle, talked earlier this week about what the line needs to do to get back on track in Week 13.

Rookie expectations: David Blough, Amani Oruwariye preparing to start

The Detroit Lions are about to face off against the Chicago Bears for their annual Thanksgiving Day game. Unfortunately for them, a short week means that injured players have less time to heal and prepare, leaving the rookies to fill their roles.

The Detroit Lions are about to face off against the Chicago Bears for their annual Thanksgiving Day game. Unfortunately for them, a short week means that injured players have less time to heal and prepare, leaving the rookies to fill their roles.

Here’s what to expect from the rookies before Thursday’s game:

Quarterback David Blough

Matthew Stafford has been ruled out.

Jeff Driskel, limited with a hamstring injury, is not expected to play.

Now, the Lions have to rely on undrafted rookie David Blough to lead the offense this Thanksgiving.

The rookie out of Purdue, who the Lions acquired via trade from the Cleveland Browns, has yet to play a snap in a regular-season game. With Cleveland in the 2019 preseason, he completed 58 percent of his passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns, along with two interceptions.

The level of competition will be much higher than they were in the preseason. The Bears have one of the best defenses in the league at the moment, so the rookie will have a lot to prove.

[lawrence-related id=34279]

Running back Ty Johnson

Johnson’s rookie campaign has slowed down immensely due to Bo Scarborough’s recent successes on offense. Once thought to be the team’s starter, Johnson has taken just 31 snaps on offense since the Lions signed Scarborough two weeks ago, rushing six times for 17 yards and making three receptions for a mere 10 yards.

Facing off against a solid Bears’ run defense that is allowing just 3.7 yards-per-carry this season, Johnson isn’t expected to contribute much on offense this week.

Tight ends T.J. Hockenson and Isaac Nauta

Despite taking the most tight end snaps last week, Hockenson managed to keep his name clear from the box score. He was targeted twice but failed to make a reception on either pass. Expect the team’s first-round pick to start once again, but don’t expect him to make a difference on offense — especially if his shoulder injury continues to be burdensome.

Nauta, who played in his first regular season game last week, took a bulk of his snaps from the fullback position. While only used for a handful of offensive snaps, the rookie tight end showed promise as a run blocker. His ability as a lead blocker could make an impact in Detroit’s run game. Expect the rookie’s role to be limited to fullback and special teams against Chicago.

Offensive lineman Beau Benzschawel

The undrafted rookie was active for the first time in his career on Sunday but never saw the field.  With both Frank Ragnow and Kenny Wiggins being full participants in practice, expect Benzschawel to make his way back to the inactives list.

EDGE Austin Bryant

Bryant’s NFL debut last week showed some promise in his limited action. The rookie was credited with one quarterback pressure, where he was able to make a hit on Washington’s Dwayne Haskins.

With both Trey Flowers and Da’Shawn Hand limited in practice, Bryant may have another opportunity to see the field this week.

Linebacker Jahlani Tavai

The last time the Lions faced the Bears, Tavai walked out of that game with three tackles and a sack. Despite his usage on-field going down drastically in recent weeks, the rookie could still have the chance to make some big plays. He’ll be used in a much more limited role, coming in as an extra linebacker in some situations. Expect the rookie to see the same success he had last time.

Cornerbacks Amani Oruwariye and Michael Jackson

One of the most pleasant surprises of the Lions’ 2019 seasons was the sudden emergence of Amani Oruwariye. After spending most of the season on the bench, the fifth-round pick found himself in the starting lineup against Washington, subbing in for an injured Rashaan Melvin.

In his first full game as a Lion, Oruwariye blanketed receivers, allowing just half of the passes that came his way, with an average passer rating of 18.7 against him.

With Melvin still listed on the injury report, expect this rookie to come in and contribute heavily on defense once again.

Fellow rookie cornerback Michael Jackson received his first snaps as a pro on special teams. If he is active again this week, his role isn’t expected to change.

Safeties Will Harris and C.J. Moore

For the third time this season, rookie Will Harris saw the field for every defensive snap in the game.

While he started the season strong, his skills in coverage have started to look like an issue. He has missed almost a fifth of the tackles he’s attempted this season and has allowed an average of nearly 12 yards-per-completion.

With Tracy Walker limited again with his lingering knee injury, Harris may be starting again this week. Hopefully, his struggles don’t show up in this matchup.

Undrafted rookie C.J. Moore has remained relatively quiet this season on defense but he’s shown some promise on special teams. With injuries at the safety position, expect Moore to be active again this week with a limited role on defense.

Chiefs release updated depth chart for Week 13

The latest depth chart reflecting all of the Kansas City Chiefs’ recent roster moves.

The Kansas City Chiefs released their depth chart for Week 13 of the 2019 regular season. This depth chart reflects a change to the roster that occurred ahead of Week 11 and another change that occurred leading up to Week 13.

Generally speaking, these depth charts give you an idea of where a player is in the pecking order. They’re considered unofficial because they’re assembled by the team’s PR staff and not the coaching staff. Some things may not accurately reflect what happens on game day because of that. However, the PR staff does have access to the teams’ closed practices and wouldn’t purposely mislead with the depth chart.

Let’s take a look at this depth chart and see what we can learn.

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Offense

Pos. First Second Third Fourth
QB Patrick Mahomes Matt Moore Chad Henne
RB Damien Williams LeSean McCoy Darwin Thompson Darrel Williams
FB Anthony Sherman
WR Tyreek Hill Demarcus Robinson Byron Pringle
WR Sammy Watkins Mecole Hardman Gehrig Dieter
TE Travis Kelce Blake Bell Deon Yelder
LT Eric Fisher Cameron Erving
LG Andrew Wylie Stefen Wisniewski
C Austin Reiter Nick Allegretti
RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Stefen Wisniewski
RT Mitchell Schwartz Jackson Barton

Observations:

  • The Kansas City Chiefs added Gehrig Dieter to the 53-man roster ahead of the Week 11 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. Since he was added over the weekend the team had already released the depth chart and the change wasn’t yet reflected.
  • Dieter is a third-string receiver behind Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman. His contributions on special teams will be most-felt unless there is an injury that thrusts him into action on offense.

The Bears at Lions Week 13 bet line sees drastic shift from opening line

Updating Vegas Watch for Week 13: According to BetMGM, the betting line has shifted from favoring the Detroit Lions to favoring the Chicago Bears.

According to BetMGM, the Detroit Lions (3-7-1) opened the week as 1.5-point favorites over the Chicago Bears (5-6) but the betting line has seen a big shift since then and now favors the Bears by 2.5-points. Now with the report that third-string undrafted rookie David Blough will start for the Lions, the bet lines have stayed the same but the odds have heavily shifted.

BetMGM has a lot of various bet lines to wager on in this game, but here’s a look the basic concepts most would be interested in, including the Moneyline, points spread and over/under.

Lions Wire editor’s thoughts/predictions

The Lions Wire editors are split on their predictions, in both who wins on Thanksgiving and by how much.

On the latest episode of the Detroit Lions Breakdown podcast, Episode 130, Erik Schlitt discussed why he believes this game favors the Lions and why they will come away with a close 17-14 victory.

Jeff Risdon made his prediction in his Behind Enemy Lines with Bears Wire article saying, “I think a healthy Lions team would roll at home on Thanksgiving, but given the shell of a team the Lions will trot out, it will take a lot of help from the Bears themselves for Detroit to win. Bears 30, Lions 17

Prediction

Philadelphia 31, Miami 10

Moneyline (?)

This has all the makings of a college moneyline with Philadelphia (-455) a massive favorite over Miami (+340). As much as Philly’s offense has struggled and been missing key weapons to the offense for the last month, -455 is a stiff price to pay to get such little return. While we would avoid this one for obvious reasons, if you were to make a bet, the only one that makes sense is a small wager on Miami on the off chance of Fitzmagic from QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Against the Spread (?)

The Dolphins have been ugly all season, which is why they’re a 9.5-point home dog (-110 on each team). If the Eagles can’t blow this one out, they don’t deserve to be in the playoffs. Including the Dolphins, four of the Eagles’ final five games are against teams currently 2-9 (Miami, New York Giants and two against Washington). This is a statement game for the Eagles – good or bad – and we think it’s going to be an aggressive statement for a team with a fresh ring. LAY THE 9.5 POINTS.

Over/Under (?)

The O/U is 44.5 points (-115 on the over, -106 on the under). Miami is last in the league in points allowed, giving up 31.5 per game. But the Eagles defense, despite an anemic showing from the Philly offense, held Tom Brady and Russell Wilson to 17 points each in their last two games. Miami’s offense? Fitzpatrick is going to be under attack all day. He may not get 10 points. TAKE THE UNDER … but not by much.

Mike Vick passes torch to Lamar Jackson as Madden’s fastest QB ever

If you played sports video games during the early-mid 2000s, then you probably remember the sensation that was playing as Michael Vick in Madden football.

If you played sports video games during the early-mid 2000s, then you probably remember the sensation that was playing as Michael Vick in Madden football games

Never before did the EA Sports classic have such a fast player at the quarterback position. In fact, Vick’s 95 speed rating nearly broke the game when he first entered the league.

Playing against Vick in Madden was infuriating because he could run backwards halfway down the field and scramble around until he found someone open. There was no defense for it.

That’s why the game designers were hesitant to make Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson as fast as he truly was during his rookie year. After last week’s dominant performance over the Rams, Madden updated Jackson’s speed rating to 96, breaking Michael Vick’s record.

Vick had fun with it and sent out a congratulatory video to Jackson, which you can see below:
