Gators remain fifth in Amway Coaches Poll for Week 13

Florida Gators’ win over the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday earned them the privilege of holding on to their ranking from the previous poll.

The Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports for Week 13 was published on Sunday with the Florida Gators still ranked fifth in the nation after a solid, but sometimes disconcerting, effort in their win against the Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday.

The most interesting change this week is the Ohio State Buckeyes and Clemson Tigers swapping places in the poll, as the former dropped a spot to No. 4 while the latter inched up to third.

The remainder of the top 10 otherwise went unchanged, with the Southeastern Conference placing four teams in the upper echelon of the standing — the Alabama Crimson Tide held onto the top spot while the Texas A&M Aggies are one notch behind the Gators at No. 6 and the Georgia Bulldogs wrap up the top tier at tenth.

The only other SEC team previously in the top 25, the Auburn Tigers, dropped out of the poll after a 42-13 drubbing by the Tide last Saturday after being ranked No. 19 the week prior. The conference-only schedule has certainly taken its toll on the league’s middle class, leaving only the cream of the crop to survive the 2020 college football gauntlet.

Here are the full top 25 rankings for college football’s Week 13 of the 2020 schedule.

Cowboys-Ravens game pushed to December 7 due to COVID outbreak

The Baltimore Ravens have had a spike in COVID cases lately. This forced the NFL to push back their Week 13

The Cowboys are coming off of an embarrassing 41-16 loss to the Washington Football Team on Thanksgiving. They were set to have another Thursday game with the Baltimore Ravens next week, but those plans have now been altered.

The Ravens have had a spike in COVID cases following their Week 11 game. At least a dozen players and staff members have all tested positive for the virus which has forced the NFL to push back their Week 12 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers again from this Sunday to Tuesday after they were set to square off Thursday. Now, it has also rescheduled their showdown with the Cowboys to December 7.

The Cowboys have been affected by COVID as well lately, just not to the level of the Ravens. Quarterback Andy Dalton and defensive lineman Tyrone Crawford were both placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list earlier this month before being added back to the active roster on November 18. Even running back Ezekiel Elliott had his battle with the virus during the summer.

This gives America’s Team four extra days to prepare for the Ravens and try to salvage what’s left of the 2020 season, which from the looks of things won’t be a whole lot.

Broncos QB Drew Lock told Courtland Sutton what route to run on 1st TD pass

Before he threw his first touchdown pass in the NFL, quarterback Drew Lock told wide receiver Courtland Sutton which route to run.

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock made his NFL debut on Sunday and threw his first touchdown pass to wide receiver Courtland Sutton, a 26-yard toss that was caught with one hand by the talented receiver.

Lock later threw another touchdown pass to Sutton and Denver went on to beat the Chargers 23-20. After the game, Sutton revealed that Lock told him what route to run for the duo’s first score of the game.

“You know what’s crazy, Drew actually told me — I wasn’t supposed to run that route,” Sutton said. “Drew told me to run it, which I was happy that he told me to do, because I’m not going to go off-schedule.

“But him telling me to do it, it was awesome, and it was cool to be able to get a touchdown from him and get us rolling, get his confidence going and get the momentum on our side.”

Broncos coach Vic Fangio explained during his Monday press conference that the play was “tagged” with multiple options. Lock “had the ability to change the route,” the coach said. It turned out to be the right decision — thanks in large part to Sutton’s brilliant catch.

“Amazing is not even a good word for how great of a catch that was,” Lock said Sunday evening. “He’s been making plays left and right for us and I think he is a top receiver in this league without a doubt.”

‘Baby Yoda Russell Wilson’ has taken over Seahawks social media

A bizarre crossover between the NFL and Star Wars, a photo of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson as “Baby Yoda” has gone viral.

Of the handful of universally beloved things in this country, two are NFL football and “Star Wars” movies. It’s not often these two pillars of American pop culture intersect, but when they do, it’s usually a big hit.

One of the most popular images trending on social media is “Baby Yoda,” an adorable little character from Disney’s new streaming series, “The Mandalorian.”

On Monday before the Seahawks’ primetime showdown with the Vikings, a new version of the popular “Baby Yoda” was edited to resemble quarterback Russell Wilson.

To encourage Pro Bowl votes for Seattle players, the Seahawks official Twitter account issued a dare to fans . . .  with 33,333 retweets, “Baby Yoda Russ” would become the team’s new profile picture.

Of course, it’s not just the fans who have gotten into this social media phenomenon. Wilson himself also changed his profile pic to “Baby Yoda Russ.”

Even the NFL’s official Twitter account is getting in on the fun as well. This year after major primetime games, the NFL tweets out a graphic from “The Checkdown” depicting players from the winning team.

In this image showing Wilson, Bobby Wagner and DK Metcalf enjoying coffee in the Space Needle, fans should zoom in on Wilson’s phone.

Seahawks Twitter is a lot like this year’s version of the team – a little bizarre at times, but more than fun nonetheless.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio disappointed by 19,094 no shows, hopes to draw them back

“We’re happy that the ones that did come and we’re working hard to get the ones that didn’t come to feel better about coming,” Fangio said.

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Drew Lock made his NFL debut on Sunday and defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 23-20. More than 19,000 fans who purchased tickets to the game didn’t show up.

The game was played on Thanksgiving weekend in cold conditions and Denver was 3-8 entering the contest so fan spirits were low. Still, 19,094 no shows is an alarming number.

“I thought that the crowd that we had there was great,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said during his Monday press conference. “It’s become very evident to me how much the fan base here loves the Broncos and depends on them.

“Our previous home game against Cleveland, it felt like a playoff game — the atmosphere in the stadium, the electricity. It’s disappointing that there were so many no shows [today], but we’re happy that the ones that did come and we’re working hard to get the ones that didn’t come to feel better about coming.”

After turning the offense over to Lock and getting a win over a division rival, Denver seems to be on the right track toward winning back fans.

The Broncos will play at home in Weeks 16 and 17 to close out the year.

3 Studs and 2 Duds from Seahawks’ besting of Vikings Monday night

Who stood out and who didn’t as the Seattle Seahawks beat the Minnesota Vikings Week 13 on the national stage to advance to No. in the West.

It’s a good time to be a cardiologist in the Seattle area thanks to all these heart-pounding Seahawks games. For the second time in three games, the Seahawks were back on “Monday Night Football” and yet again it came down to a wild fourth quarter.

The Seahawks downed the 8-win Vikings in front of a national audience to improve to 10-2 and take first place in the NFC West. Meanwhile, the Vikings stay put at the No. 6 seed and a game and a half behind the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North.

For whatever reason, the Seahawks can never seem to play a normal game as they always come down to nail-biters late. As a result, here’s who stood out in the Seahawks’ explosive win.

Seattle Seahawks Week 13 player of the game: Rashaad Penny

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny had his first career two touchdown game, en route to his second straight player of the week.

The Seattle Seahawks always keep things interesting, and what was shaping up to be a blowout turned into a narrow 37-30 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football.

It wasn’t the prettiest game (is it ever?) but the player of the game honor – for the second week in a row – goes to running back Rashaad Penny.

Penny, who has been nearly non-existent for the majority of the season, carried the ball 15 times for 74 yards and a touchdown, while also hauling in four receptions (on five targets) for 33 yards and a touchdown on a screen pass – giving him his first career two touchdown game.

“I thought Rashaad looked so fast tonight,” coach Pete Carroll commented postgame. “He just looked so explosive. The screenplay was a beautiful call, beautiful execution. It just showed that burst that he has and why he’s so exciting.”

While Carson outgained Penny, rushing 23 times for 102 yards, it was Penny’s work as both a receiving threat and a runner out of the backfield that gave him the honor this week.

Seahawks fans have been waiting nearly two years for the 1-2 punch of Penny and Carson to show up together in the same game, and the duo picked a great game to finally do it – as the win gives Seattle sole possession of first place in the NFC West, where they hold the tiebreaker over San Francisco.

Seahawks take lead over 49ers in NFC West after beating Vikings

After the Week 13 win over the Minnesota Vikings, the Seattle Seahawks have leaped the San Francisco 49ers for first place in the NFC West.

The Seattle Seahawks beat the Minnesota Vikings Monday night at CenturyLink Field in an NFC game of epic proportions. With the win, the Seahawks have leaped over the San Francisco 49ers to take the lead in the NFC West and the No. 2 seed in the conference.

San Francisco lost a close game Sunday to the Ravens and stands at 10-2 on the year. Seattle, also 10-2 this season, has already beaten the 49ers and thus advanced to first place in the division.

The Seahawks have also drastically changed their potential playoff position. Here’s a look a the two possible outcomes from Monday night.

Had Seattle lost, the Seahawks would have dropped to the No. 6 seed, below both the 49ers and the Vikings and San Francisco would have remained at the top of the NFC West.

There is plenty of football to be played this season, however, including the Seahawks Week 17 matchup against the 49ers at home, which could prove to be the team’s most important game of 2019.

Seahawks running backs prove unstoppable Monday night against Vikings

The Seattle Seahawks turned to their trusty running back duo of Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny in their Monday night win over the Vikings.

The Seahawks turned to their trusty running back duo Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings to come away with a huge NFC win and the lead in the NFC West. Seattle beat Minnesota 37-30 Week 13 to advance to 10-2 on the year.

Starter Chris Carson and second-year running back, Rashaad Penny, split the load in primetime and each came away with major yardage and a rushing touchdown.

Carson scored first on a one-yard run in the first quarter after an impressive long of 25 yards to get the Seahawks in the red zone. On the night, he posted 23 carries for 102 yards and the TD. He also managed an absolutely huge third-down conversion in the final minutes of the game to basically seal the deal for Seattle.

Penny’s one-yard TD run came in the third quarter to tie up the game 17-17. He finished the outing with 15 touches for 74 yards on the ground and also factored nicely into the passing game, totaling four catches on five targets for 33 yards and a receiving touchdown.

Carson and Penny have been hot and cold throughout the year, with one or the other dominating each week. On Monday night, however, the group effort finally paid off and two combined for 176 yards rushing to give the Seahawks exactly what they needed to emerge victorious over the Vikings.
