Fantasy Football Market Report: Week 11

The top risers and fallers heading into Week 11.

For those who drafted some of the top tight ends only to be bitterly disappointed, it would appear the tide has turned.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce has caught 32 passes over the last three games. Sam LaPorta (shoulder) of the Detroit Lions is catching touchdowns after a slow start. Baltimore Ravens TE Mark Andrews has five touchdowns in his last five games.

For those who were impatient, these guys were traded after painfully slow starts. Those who are patient have been rewarded. Only give up on tight ends after National Tights Ends Day.

Fantasy Football Market Report: Week 11

The top risers and fallers heading into Week 11.

Quarterbacks always make headlines in the NFL, but what wide receivers have accomplished so far this season has been amazing. It seems like history is made every week, and it has been spread throughout the league.

Tyreek Hill topped 1,000 receiving yards in eight games. A.J. Brown had six straight games with more than 125 receiving yards. In the eight games he has played, Amon-Ra St. Brown has either 100 yards, a touchdown or both. Michael Pittman Jr. has caught eight or more passes in seven of 10 games. In the four games without Cooper Kupp, rookie Puka Nacua caught 39 passes for 501 yards.

This year more than most, the biggest headline in fantasy football hasn’t been about the quarterbacks, it’s been about the weekly back-breaking performances by wide receivers.

The best fantasy football gamble of Week 11

Can the Lions make Daniel Jones a QB1 in Week 11?

Every week, at least one player becomes my fascination of whether he’s worthy of a fantasy football start as a streamer. The decision can be a mental wrestling match, but for the purpose of brevity, only one player can be chosen as the fantasy football gamble of the week.

The best fantasy football gamble for Week 11

Tracking my predictions: 2-7-1
Win: Player produces ≥ 75% of projected fantasy points
Loss: Player produces >75% of projected fantasy points
Tie: Player is ejected, leaves with an injury, or lands on COVID-19 list after publishing

2021 record: 8-9-1
2020 record: 5-10-1

Something tells me I made this reference before, but this season’s series feels like I’ve been a poker player on tilt. Every single time I invest in a player, situation or matchup in this space, it seems as though I’m chasing the next week to catch up. It’s easy to lose track of the fact that every single player in this series is a gamble and not a lock, so I need to occasionally remind myself this is intended to be much closer to Keno than video poker or blackjack.

Lamenting aside, we’ll dive right into Week 11’s player rather than dwell on why I was brash (read as “stupid”) enough to roll with a Carolina Panthers receiver last week.

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones vs. Detroit Lions

Jones isn’t an option for the faint of heart. He has 20 or more fantasy points in two of the last three games but just 10.8 points sandwiched in between. Jones’ role has been mostly that of a game manager in 2022, and he has thrown zero TD passes in four of nine contests.

The one thing head coach Brian Daboll rarely has been given enough credit for in his coaching career is molding his play designs and the implementation of such to the strengths of his personnel. Prior to the ascension of Josh Allen into a star quarterback, Buffalo’s offense was heavily reliant on the running game, because that’s where the talent was centralized. Daboll’s previous stops also showcase his understanding of how to best utilize his available assets.

We’re seeing it play out in real time with the Giants. This team has one of the best running backs on this side of the Milky Way, and New York’s receiving corps is among the least impressive in the league. Rather than having Jones sling it like he has something to prove — which he still does — Daboll’s understanding of this has created a more efficient version of Jones. That’s not necessarily the best thing in fantasy, but it follows a proven blueprint.

Playing within bounds of a system that is deliberately catered to the confines its personnel can occasionally result in massive spikes in production, as we’ve seen with the inconsistency in Jones’ fantasy offerings.

The sheer volatility will scare off most risk-averse owners, and that’s quite all right. In Week 11, Jones has a chance to exploit a Detroit defense that ranks as the worst unit in football vs. quarterbacks. No team has given up more fantasy points on the year, and much of the success is due to four rushing TDs allowed.

Despite allowing those ground scores to QBs — which plays strongly into Jones’ style of play — this remains the top matchup even when those touchdowns are pulled out of the stats against Detroit. The Lions rank as the best opponent for efficiency for generating fantasy points. This opponent is the seventh easiest for yardage per game through the air and No. 5 in touchdown efficiency allowed.

Six quarterbacks have racked up at least 22.6 fantasy points against the Lions, and four of those efforts went into the 30s. Dak Prescott is the only mildly mobile quarterback who didn’t manage relevant stats on the ground. Jalen Hurts (17-90-1), Geno Smith (7-49-1), and Justin Fields (13-147-2) all racked up points, and even a geriatric Aaron Rodgers (4-40-0) turned back the clock a few years vs. this group.

The matchup profiles well for a gamble on Jones in a week in which three viable starting QBs are on bye. This week, trust him vs. Detroit’s laughable defense of the position.

My projection: 21-for-29, 215 yards, 1 TD pass, 55 rushing yards, 1 TD (26.25 fantasy points)

The best fantasy football gamble of Week 11

Will this tight end’s Week 11 outing go swimmingly vs. Philly?

Every week, at least one player becomes my fascination of whether he’s worthy of a fantasy football start or bench. The decision can be a mental wrestling match, but for the purpose of brevity, only one player can be chosen as the fantasy football gamble of the week.

The best fantasy football gamble for Week 11

Tracking my predictions: 3-7-0
Win: Player produces ≥ 75% of projected fantasy points
Loss: Player produces >75% of projected fantasy points
Tie: Player is ejected or leaves with an injury

I’ve had a few close ones that didn’t break in my favor this year, along with a couple of outright misses, but none were worse than last week’s recommendation of Trevor Lawrence. He had a fantastic matchup and definitely enough weapons to do something worthwhile, but the rookie was an unmitigated fantasy disaster.

That’s why this article is about gambles and not locks, but that was tough to swallow. The upcoming slate of games has only two teams on bye, both of those starting tight ends are in the weekly lineup conversation. However, the position is loaded with volatility and has a few notable injuries to watch, too.

TE Adam Trautman, New Orleans Saints at Philadelphia Eagles

In the last three games, Trautman has been targeted at least six times in each contest and has finally started to show signs of life after early-offseason sleeper hype was derailed by a late-summer ankle injury.

The loss of Jameis Winston (knee) for the season actually works in Trautman’s favor. He isn’t going to be stretching the field too often, and Winston has not exactly been known for going through his reads and settling for a boring checkdown. Trevor Siemian starting is a huge win for the young tight end, and the absence of Alvin Kamara (knee) last week helped lead to a career-high in catches (five) for Trautman. Taysom Hill has thrown four passes in the last two games, divided evenly, and half of them went to Trautman in the most recent outing. Both quarterbacks survive as short- to intermediate-area passers, and it’s unclear if Kamara will be ready to return for Week 11.

Additionally, the Saints don’t exactly have an inspiring cast of receivers, and the are in which the Eagles are strongest is vs. wideouts. Deep threats Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris face the most difficult cornerback duo to exploit in Darius Slay and Steven Nelson, which should redirect a few passes Trautman’s way.

While Trautman doesn’t have a TD this year and has scored only once in his 23 career games played, he profiles as a legitimate weapon in the red zone at 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, with the collegiate pedigree as a prolific scorer. The second-year tight end was a touchdown machine at Dayton, even if it came against inferior competition.

Eight different TEs have scored 10-plus PPR points on the year vs. Philadelphia, and all but one happened in the last five weeks. Of the eight TDs scored, five have come in the last six games, and this is among the best matchups available for the week.

My projection: 5 catches, 56 yards, 1 TD (16.6 PPR fantasy points)

Fantasy Football Rest of Season Rankings: Week 11

Forecasting where all of the notable players net out over the remainder of the season.

These fantasy football rankings track a player’s value for the remainder of the season and are intended to be used as a tool, not necessarily a definitive guide to player valuation.

The scoring system is performance PPR. There is no exact science behind season-long rankings, considering all of the variables and situational uncertainties at work.

Rankings key:
UP/DN is trending up or down from week’s ranking.
NR means the player wasn’t ranked last week.
UP/DN numbering shows where the player was ranked the prior week.
