Patrick Mahomes has never thrown an interception — or lost a game — in September

Patrick Mahomes is always hard to stop. But in Septembers, he’s been impossible to even slow down.

If you want to get to Patrick Mahomes and limit his performance when the Chiefs’ offense is fully healthy, that’s obviously a tall task. If you want to do so in September, that’s even tougher. Through his NFL career and three full seasons as Kansas City’s starting quarterback, the Chiefs have never lost a game in September — they’re 10-0 — and Mahomes’ stats are just bizarrely great. He’s completed 250 of 370 passes (67.6%) in Septembers in his career for 3304 yards (8.93 yards per attempt), 32 touchdowns, no interceptions, and a passer rating of 124.4. That’s pretty good. Mahomes has also been sacked just nine times for 50 yards in the first month of his three starting seasons, which has a lot to do with it.

As Andy Reid said this week, the fact that opponents don’t have a ton of regular-season tape to judge what Kansas City’s offensive tendencies are also helps.

“For the first three games, that’s the way it is. Once you get past that third game, now you’ve got at least some data. So, it’s that way for everybody and it’s that way on both sides of the ball. Not that there’s always – they could do this, you come into it new and fresh, and you expect there will be something you haven’t seen, and you have to adjust to it.”

For Mahomes, getting started quickly out of the gate has to do with an overall mentality.

“I think we just stress the importance of starting the season fast. We have a very tough training camp as everyone knows. We really compete and go at it every single day at practice, and I think prepares us to be ready to go from day one. I think just stressing the importance of – we’ve kind of come out, in my time at least with a lot of really good football teams up early in the season and we know that if you lose a game in September it could cost you at the end of the season as far  as seeding if you’re trying to get into the playoffs. So, we just stress the importance of knowing that we’re playing against really good football teams in the beginning of the year.”

Now, it’s up to the Browns to become the first team to make Mahomes look mortal in the first month of a season. Cleveland has a radically rebuilt secondary this season, and one of the reasons they did that was because they had no deep safeties, but… in September, 2020, against the Ravens, Bengals, and Washington, the Browns allowed 79 completions on 124 attempts (63.7%) for 831 yards (6.7 yards per attempt), eight touchdowns, and just three interceptions.

Denzel Ward, Cleveland’s best cornerback, allowed two of those touchdowns, so it’s not just about the new safeties. And the last time we saw Ward, he was getting completely turned around by Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce on this filthy pivot route in the divisional playoffs.

So. As high as we all are on the Browns this year, and justifiably so, facing Mahomes again brings its own set of complications. In September, the math turns from simple multiplication to advanced algebra. This afternoon, we’ll see how the Browns will counter this stark reality.

NFL Week 1 Bets: 4 best moneyline bets to make

Looking at the early betting lines for Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season and higlighting four moneyline bets to make.

We take a look at four NFL Week 1 moneyline bets you can make at BetMGM following the release of the 2020 NFL schedule. Get an early edge on the betting odds and lines before rosters begin to finalize.

Las Vegas Raiders (-106) over Carolina Panthers (Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. ET)

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Odds last updated Sunday, May 10 at 8 a.m. ET.

One of the strangest lines for Week 1 has the Panthers (-115) favored over the Raiders (-106). While the Raiders were just a 7-9 team in 2019, continuity is going to prove pivotal early in the 2020 season with abbreviated offseason programs around the league. Las Vegas added a ton of talent over the offseason, including wide receivers Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards in the 2020 NFL Draft.

With the Panthers not only bringing in a new coaching staff, but also a new quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater with essentially a whole new defense, don’t be surprised if the Panthers get off to a rough start. Their secondary is also one of the worst units in the league and look for Raiders head coach Jon Gruden and QB Derek Carr to take advantage of the young group. I like the RAIDERS (-106) to win in Carolina.

Los Angeles Rams (+120) over Dallas Cowboys (Sunday, Sept. 13 at 8:20 p.m. ET)

The Rams will open the season in their new stadium as they play host to the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Despite the home advantage, the Rams are underdogs in this matchup. LA finished the 2019 season slow, but they are still one of the most talented offenses in the NFL and have arguably the best player in the league in DT Aaron Donald on defense.

With Dallas having a new head coach (Mike McCarthy) for the first time since 2010, the Cowboys will need some time to adjust. For that reason, they may look a little sloppy on both sides of the ball until they learn their new schemes. Take the RAMS (+120) and the value here in Week 1.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rams to beat the Cowboys outright will return a profit of $12.

Pittsburgh Steelers (-176) over New York Giants (Monday, Sept. 14 at 7:15 p.m. ET)

The Steelers will play on the road in Week 1 for the sixth straight year, but they will open with a fairly easy opponent as they will face the Giants (+145). New York has a new coaching staff with Joe Judge, so don’t be surprised if it takes them a while to get up to speed.

Pittsburgh is bringing back nearly its entire starting lineup, including QB Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers also have one of the best defenses in the NFL, as they created a league-high 38 turnovers in 2019. They return 10 of 11 starters and should start the season off strong. This should be a fairly easy win for Pittsburgh in New Jersey.

Denver Broncos (-154) over Tennessee Titans (Monday, Sept. 14 at 10:10 p.m. ET)

The Broncos will play the second Monday Night Football game to open the season as they host the Titans (+130). If you know anything about the Broncos early in the season, they are nearly impossible to beat at home. Since the merger, they are 51-9-2 at home during the first two weeks of the season. Teams just aren’t conditioned enough to play in the thin atmosphere of Denver in September.

While the Titans were able to make it to the AFC Championship in 2019, expect them to start the season 0-1.

Chargers open up as favorites vs. Bengals in season opener

The Los Angeles Chargers have a favorable matchup to open up the 2020 regular season.

The 2020 NFL schedule was released on Thursday evening.

First up, the Chargers will travel to take on the Bengals on Sept. 13 at 1:05 p.m. PT.

Oddsmakers are rolling with Los Angeles to come out on top in the season opener as they open up as 3.5-point favorites over Cincinnati, per BetMGM.

After finishing with the worst record in football, the Bengals did quite a bit to reconstruct their team starting with the quarterback position, selecting former LSU QB Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft.

Other notable additions to improve the roster includes the signings of defensive tackle D.J. Reader, safety Von Bell, cornerback Trae Waynes, among others.

As for the Chargers, they will have a new starting signal-caller after the marriage between Philip Rivers came to an end earlier this offseason. At the moment, Tyrod Taylor is slated to start but rookie Justin Herbert will compete for the job.

Los Angeles lost some other players, including running back Melvin Gordon, but the majority of the key pieces of the roster from the previous seasons stayed intact.

They made sure to some reinforcements, which include tackle Bryan Bulaga, guard Trai Turner, cornerback Chris Harris Jr., defensive tackle Linval Joseph, linebacker Kenneth Murray, among others.

Even though Burrow had a monstrous stint for the Tigers, leading them to hoisting the trophy this past season, the NFL is a different animal. He should experience growing pains, especially in his first game against a stout Chargers defense.
