Washington Football Team at New England Patriots odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing the Washington Football Team at New England Patriots preseason Week 1 matchup, with NFL odds, lines, picks, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Football Team and New England Patriots kick off Week 1 of the preseason on Thursday, their first game action of the year. Kickoff from Gillette Stadium is at 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Washington vs. Patriots odds and lines, and make our best NFL picks, predictions and bets.

Washington enters this season seeking its second straight NFC East title after winning the division in narrow fashion last year. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to be the starter although he’ll face some competition from QB Taylor Heinicke. The defense is where the strength of this team truly lies as they have a defensive front that rivals any in the NFL.

The Patriots are still searching for a starting quarterback of their own. QB Cam Newton and QB Mac Jones are both expected to play against Washington. It will mark the first time Jones takes the field in an NFL game – even if it is just a preseason game. CB Stephon Gilmore won’t play in this one, but New England’s defense is still formidable.

Washington at Patriots odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Washington 20, Patriots 14

Money line

The first preseason game is always a little bit sloppy, especially with backups and reserves handling the bulk of the snaps. Washington’s roster is a little bit deeper than the Patriots’, so I feel more confident in the road team coming in and grabbing a win over New England.

Bet WASHINGTON (-105) to win outright against the Patriots, who are going to have trouble keeping their quarterbacks upright.

Against the spread

Washington has the edge at quarterback in this one assuming Fitzpatrick and Heinicke both play. Fitzpatrick will be aggressive throwing the ball, while Heinicke will get the chance to show off his athleticism as a runner.

I like WASHINGTON +1.5 (-115) to win outright and in turn cover the spread, with its defense stymying New England’s offense.

Over/Under

It’s always difficult to predict what the score line is going to be in the preseason, especially in Week 1. However, with rust being knocked off and players attempting to find their footing this shouldn’t be a high-scoring game in Foxborough.

Bet the UNDER 37.5 (-115) tonight.

Washington Football Team at New England Patriots odds and lines: All eyes on the QB battles

Odds and lines for Thursday’s Washington Football Team at New England Patriots NFL preseason game.

The Washington Football Team and New England Patriots get their preseason schedules underway Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Below, we look at the Washington at Patriots odds and lines.

All eyes seem to be fixated on the quarterback competition in Washington as head coach Ron Rivera enters his second season at the helm. While no one truly believes offseason acquisition QB Ryan Fitzpatrick won’t be under center when Week 1 rolls around, Rivera’s comments Sunday seem to suggest he may get a few more reps than expected in their preseason opener before giving way to QB Taylor Heinicke.

New England also has a quarterback battle on its hands. The expectation for the Patriots is that veteran QB Cam Newton will start in Week 1 but first-round draft prick QB Mac Jones has been seeing more first-team snaps in recent practices. Patriots fans will surely want to get a good look at their new prospect after a difficult first season for Newton in 2020.

Thursday’s preseason opener for the two teams is likely to see a lot of backup play after the first few drives. The backups are likely to give way to the third team in the second half as coaches for both squads try to get a look at players nearer the roster bubble.

New to NFL betting?

Washington, at -133 odds, has an implied 57.08% chance of winning, or 100/133 fractional odds. If Washington wins by 3 or more points, a WFT -2.5 (-110) ATS bet wins.

The Patriots (+110) have an implied 47.62% chance of beating Washington, or 11/10 fractional odds. New England must win outright or lose by 2 or fewer points for a Patriots +2.5 (-110) ATS ticket to cash.

There would need to be a combined 36 points scored Thursday for an OVER 35.5 (-105) ticket to cash, while a combined point total of 35 or fewer points is a win for the Under.

Buccaneers at Washington: Game notes

  • The Bucs ended a 12-year playoff drought and return to the postseason for the first time since winning the NFC South in 2007. They finished second in the division behind the New Orleans Saints this year.
  • Washington earned the division crown and a playoff berth with a 20-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night of Week 17. Its season started with an upset win over the rival Eagles followed by a five-game losing skid, four-game winning streak, and back-to-back losses before the finale.
  • Tampa Bay won 11 of 15 games after a season-opening 34-23 loss to the Saints. The Buccaneers won their final four games of the season following a Week 13 bye.
  • Washington QB Alex Smith made a valiant return from a devastating 2018 leg injury to lead the team to a 5-1 record in six starts. He completed 66.7% of his passes for 1,582 yards and 6 touchdowns against 8 interceptions and was much better than both Dwayne Haskins (released) and Kyle Allen (injured).
  • Buccaneers QB Tom Brady, 43, had a resurgent first season in Tampa, Fla. He completed 65.7% of his passes for 4,633 yards (his highest total since 2015) with 40 touchdown passes against 12 interceptions. The ageless wonder also ran for 3 scores.
  • Brady is 30-11 in the playoffs in his career, all with the New England Patriots. Smith has a combined 2-5 playoff record with the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Buccaneers at Washington: Key injuries

Buccaneers

  • CB Carlton Davis (groin) questionable
  • WR Mike Evans (knee) questionable
  • DL Jeremiah Ledbetter (calf) out

Washington

  • LB Thomas Davis (knee) out
  • RB Antonio Gibson (toe) questionable
  • WR Terry McLaurin (ankle) questionable
  • LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (ankle) questionable
  • QB Alex Smith (calf) questionable

Buccaneers at Washington: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Buccaneers 21, Washington 17

Money line (?)

The Buccaneers (-350) should win this game behind Brady and the NFL’s seventh-ranked offense by yards per play (6.0), but they’re far too expensive. Trust the regular-season records, the better quarterback and the odds on the heavy favorite.

Officially, I’ll PASS, but I’m not against a small wager on Washington (+340) due to the tremendous value for an inspired playoff team at home. Washington has a path to winning this game behind rookie DE Chase Young and the league’s third-best pass rush by ESPN’s team win rate.

Against the spread (?)

The 7.5-point line has some “Brady Factor” baked into it with Tampa Bay having a significant edge in public favoritism. Washington was a fully-competent team under Smith with McLaurin (1,118 receiving yards, 4 TDs) and Gibson (795 rushing yards, 11 TDs) helping along the way.

Yes, Brady had a fantastic season and continues to play well below his listed age, but the Washington pass rush will be like none he faced this season. Add in potential injury trouble for Tampa Bay at key positions, and Washington will keep this much closer than the national audience expects.

Take WASHINGTON +7.5 (-110).

Over/Under (?)

Only two teams played to a higher percentage of Unders than Washington’s 5-11 record against the number. While the offense struggled immensely under Haskins, the defense is the main reason why. Washington held the opposition to 17 or fewer points in all seven wins.

The Tampa Bay defense is often overshadowed by Brady, but it ranked fifth by Football Outsiders’ DVOA while Washington was third.

Take the UNDER 44.5 (-110), especially if backing Washington.

Washington at Eagles: Game notes

  • It’s simple. Washington wins the NFC East Division with a win. It goes home for the offseason if it loses – the Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants 1 p.m. ET winner would then claim the title. Already eliminated, the Eagles can only play “spoiler.”
  • The biggest question is the availability of Washington QB Alex Smith, who didn’t play the last two and a half games due to a right calf injury. NFL Network reported Saturday that Smith, who is listed as questionable on the official injury report, will start but will be re-evaluated Sunday morning. The veteran QB is the frontrunner for AP Comeback Player of the Year after steering 4 consecutive wins from Weeks 11-14. QB Taylor Heinicke is the backup.
  • Two more nagging injuries to worry about are those of Washington’s top receiver, Terry McLaurin (ankle), and leading rusher, rookie RB Antonio Gibson (toe). They’re also both listed as questionable but are expected to play.
  • Washington upset the Eagles 27-17 in Week 1 as a 5.5-point home underdog behind a 13-0 fourth-quarter rally. QBs Dwayne Haskins (WFT) and Carson Wentz (Philly) were the starters. Haskins has since been released, and Wentz was replaced by rookie QB Jalen Hurts.
  • Hurts started the last 3 games and has completed 54.9% of his passes for 847 yards with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions while running for 238 yards with a TD on 38 carries. Philly is 1-2 in his starts.
  • Washington’s Week 1 victory vs. Philly snapped a 6-game skid in the head-to-head series.

Betting stats:

  • ATS: Washington 9-6 | Eagles 5-10
  • O/U: Washington 5-10 | Eagles 7-8

Washington at Eagles: Key injuries

Washington

  • LB Thomas Davis (knee) out
  • RB Antonio Gibson (toe) questionable
  • WR Terry McLaurin (ankle) questionable
  • LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (ankle) questionable
  • QB Alex Smith (calf) questionable

Eagles

  • DE Derek Barnett (calf) out
  • DT Fletcher Cox (neck) out
  • TE Dallas Goedert (calf) out
  • WR DeSean Jackson (ankle) out
  • CB Michael Jacquet (calf) questionable
  • OT Jordan Mailata (concussion) out
  • CB Jalen Mills (reserve/COVID-19 list) out
  • LB Duke Riley (biceps) out
  • RB Miles Sanders (knee) out
  • TE Richard Rodgers (ankle) out
  • LB Shaun Bradley (neck) out

Washington at Eagles: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Washington 21, Eagles 20

Money line (?)

PASS. Washington’s -225 is too pricey and not worth the risk.

Against the spread (?)

PHILADELPHIA +4 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager – as long as the line doesn’t drop below 3, which it shouldn’t. Washington should get the win it needs as long as Smith can play, but Hurts will keep the depleted Eagles within striking distance.

Over/Under (?)

PASS. I’m sorry. I hate giving out only one play in these columns, but the 43.5 total is a tough call. It’s low, but with the number of Washington’s questionable injuries, it’s too dicey to wager on.

If it’s announced Smith won’t play, try to catch the Under before it drops and back the Eagles’ money line (+180).

Panthers at Washington: Game notes

  • The Panthers lost to the Green Bay Packers 24-16 at Lambeau Field in their Week 15 Saturday primetime game. The Packers took a 21-3 lead into halftime, but Carolina snuck in the backdoor to cover as a 9.5-point underdog.
  • Carolina’s gambling records: 8-6 ATS and 7-7 O/U.
  • Like the Panthers, Washington lost its Week 15 game but got an ATS win as a 6-point underdog in a 20-15 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Second-year QB Dwayne Haskins filled in for an injured QB Alex Smith, completing 38 of 55 passes for 295 yards with a TD and 2 interceptions, and steering Washington to 12 fourth-quarter points to key the cover.
  • Washington’s gambling records: 9-5 ATS and 5-9 O/U.
  • Panthers-Washington is the Ron Rivera Revenge Game as the Football Team’s head coach is facing his former team, which he coached from 2011-19. Under Rivera, Carolina won three straight NFC South titles (2013-15) and played in Super Bowl L, losing to the Denver Broncos.

Panthers at Washington: Key injuries

Panthers

  • DE Brian Burns (knee) questionable
  • RB Christian McCaffrey (thigh) doubtful
  • LT Russell Okung (calf) doubtful
  • CB Troy Pride Jr. (hip) doubtful
  • DT Bravvion Roy (knee) questionable

Washington

  • RB Antonio Gibson (toe) questionable
  • WR Terry McLaurin (ankle) out
  • LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (ankle) questionable
  • QB Alex Smith (calf) questionable

Panthers at Washington: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Panthers 20, Washington 16

Money line (?)

According to Washington Wire, Smith is dealing with soreness in his injured calf and is unlikely to start, paving the way for a second-consecutive Haskins start. If Smith were playing, it’d be hard to not back Washington with its 5-2 home ATS record, while it sits atop the NFC East trying to earn a playoff berth with a coach who’s battled cancer all season and is playing his former employer. Washington’s motivation is clear and obvious.

However, the dropoff from Smith to Haskins is greater than BetMGM is accounting for. It’s hard seeing how Washington has success on offense with McLaurin out and leading-rusher Gibson playing through a toe injury after missing the previous two games.

The Panthers are one of the best road dogs in the NFL, covering in six of their seven road games. It’s an ATS trend that applies since the spread is nearly a pick ’em. Also, the Panthers will have an easier time scheming against a Washington offense that will generate few explosive plays.

GIMME PANTHERS (+100) for 1 unit.

Against the spread (?)

PASS since it’s slightly cheaper to back the Panthers money line, to win straight-up. Getting +1 (one point) doesn’t provide any real insurance.

Over/Under (?)

This feels like a game where both teams play a more conservative style and try to capitalize on each other’s mistakes. I’m expecting a lot of run plays and check-downs, which will keep the clock moving.

Furthermore, Carolina QB Teddy Bridgewater is a quintessential game manager, who doesn’t turn the ball over (eight interceptions in 2020) and should be looking to get rid of the ball fast against a ferocious Washington pass rush.

I’d bet UNDER 41.5 (-105) for a half-unit only because we are late to the party as the market has bet this total down from a 45-point opener.

Seahawks at Washington: Game notes

  • Seattle’s coming off one of the most impressive efforts of the 2020 NFL season with a 40-3 throttling of the New York Jets at home in Week 14. The victory followed a shocking 17-12 upset loss against the New York Giants, also at home.
  • The Seahawks are tied with the Los Angeles Rams atop the NFC West. The Rams host the Jets Sunday as a 17-point favorite.
  • Washington is riding a surprising four-game winning streak and has taken over the top spot in the NFC East entering Week 15.
  • Washington has scored at least 20 points in seven straight games after being held below that mark four times in its first six games of the season.
  • The Seahawks have given up fewer than 20 points in three consecutive games. They’re still allowing an averaging of 24.9 points per game for the season, though.
  • Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is coming off his fifth game with at least 4 passing touchdowns this year. He has 3,685 passing yards and 36 touchdowns against 12 interceptions through 13 games.
  • Washington may be switching back to 2019 first-round pick QB Dwayne Haskins for the Week 15 start after QB Alex Smith left last week’s game with a calf injury. Haskins has 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions through four starts and the relief appearance.

Seahawks at Washington: Key injuries

Seahawks

  • DE Carlos Dunlap (foot) questionable
  • OT Brandon Shell (ankle) questionable
  • OT Duane Brown (knee) questionable
  • Mike Iupati (knee) questionable
  • Phil Haynes (groin) questionable

Washington

  • QB Alex Smith (calf) questionable
  • RB Antonio Gibson (toe) questionable
  • RB Peyton Barber (ankle) questionable
  • DT Jonathan Allen (groin) questionable

Seahawks at Washington: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Seahawks 20, Washington 10

Money line (?)

The Seahawks (-250) are a little too pricey to back with a simple money line wager. If you like them to win the game, the value lies in taking them to win by at least 7 points on the spread.

PASS.

Against the spread (?)

The SEAHAWKS -6 (-110) will continue their revenge on the rest of the league following what was an embarrassing loss to the Giants. It was only their second time being held to fewer than 20 points this season. Washington will have trouble hitting that number if Smith is unable to suit up.

Over/Under (?)

Having noted the prowess of Wilson and the Seattle offense, we’ll still take the UNDER 44.5 (-110). The injuries along the Seahawks offensive line are concerning, especially against a top-rated Washington pass rush.

The fear of the Over would be if Haskins starts and Seattle is able to add defensive scores. Check the injury reports Sunday morning before betting the total.

Washington vs. 49ers: Game notes

  • Last Monday, Washington pulled off one of the biggest shockers of the season by handing the Pittsburgh Steelers (11-1) their first loss in a 23-17 upset. Washington, which was a 6-point road underdog, has won three in a row.
  • On a sour note for Washington, rookie RB Antonio Gibson injured his toe in the win and has been ruled out for Week 14. Gibson leads Washington with 659 rushing yards and 11 rushing TDs.
  • In their first game played in Arizona since the move due to COVID-19 issues, the 49ers lost as 1.5-point favorites to the Buffalo Bills 34-24 in the Monday Night Football game last week. It was the 49ers’ fourth loss in their last five games.
  • Washington and the New York Giants sit atop the woeful NFC East with identical 5-7 records, but the G-Men hold the tiebreaker thanks to a season sweep of Washington.
  • The 49ers are last in the NFC West but just one game back of the NFC’s last playoff spot, which is held by the 6-6 Minnesota Vikings.
  • The 49ers are 6-1 in their last seven vs. Washington, taking the most recent matchup 9-0 in Week 7 last season. The game was played in windy conditions in a steady rain as the visiting 49ers came up a point short of covering as 10-point favorites.

Betting stats:

  • ATS: Washington 7-5 | 49ers 5-7
  • O/U: Washington 5-7 | 49ers 6-6

Washington vs. 49ers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

49ers 24, Washington 17

Money line (?)

PASS. The 49ers (-155) catch a break with Washington (+130) having to play a second consecutive road game on a short week. However, the -155 juice isn’t worth betting.

Against the spread (?)

SAN FRANCISCO -3 (-105) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Washington has been on a roll, but it will come up short with Gibson out. Look for 49ers QB Nick Mullens (1,958 passing yards, 9 TDs, 9 INTs) to get the best of Washington QB Alex Smith (1,363 passing yards, 4 TDs, 5 INTs), who played his first 7 seasons with San Francisco.

Over/Under (?)

The UNDER 43.5 (-110) is the way to go. Washington’s offense will struggle without its leading rusher, but the key here is that both defenses are better than average.

Washington allows 21.7 points per game (ranking eighth) and 310.9 yards per game (fourth). San Francisco allows 24.0 PPG (13th) and 326.3 YPG (sixth).

Washington at Steelers: Game notes

  • Washington routed the Dallas Cowboys 41-16 on Thanksgiving in Week 13 to win a second game in a row. Washington stifled the Cowboys’ rushing attack and held them to just 60 yards on 18 carries and forced a fumble out of RB Ezekiel Elliott.
  • Washington rookie RB Antonio Gibson sneakily is having one of the best rookie campaigns this year in the NFL. Gibson has 645 rushing yards on 4.6 yards per rush and is leading all NFL rookies with 11 touchdowns.
  • The Steelers are coming off a 19-14 home win vs. the Baltimore Ravens in Week 12. The game was played last Wednesday as the Ravens have been ravaged by a combination of positive COVID tests and contact tracing protocols. In the win, Pittsburgh lost a key defensive contributor—LB Bud Dupree who’s second on the team in sacks—with a torn ACL.
  • Pittsburgh opened up as 11-point favorites but the market has been hitting Washington enough that bookmakers have moved the line way down to the current price.

Betting stats:

  • ATS: Washington 6-5 | Steelers 8-3
  • O/U: Washington 5-6 | Steelers 4-5-2

Washington at Steelers: Key injuries

Washington at Steelers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Washington 23, Steelers 21

Money line (?)

This is low-key a defensive battle with two of the top-5 defenses in the NFL squaring off. Pittsburgh and Washington are first and second in both opponent’s passing yards per game and sack rate.

I give Washington the edge because it has more balance on offense at the moment. QB Alex Smith is by far the best quarterback on the roster and Washington has produced at least 150 yards on both the ground and through the air in back-to-back weeks.

Pittsburgh has rushed for fewer than 100 yards five times in its last six games. The injury report gives me no confidence it gets better against Washington.

All that being said, I only lean Washington (+240) for a quarter-unit because taking the points is the smarter play.

Against the spread (?)

GIMME WASHINGTON +6.5 (-105) for 2 units. Washington’s defense is almost as stingy as Pittsburgh’s. As long as Washington doesn’t turn the ball over, this game should finish within a field goal either way. That’s easier said than done against a Steelers defense that has the most takeaways in the NFL.

Over/Under (?)

PASS with a lean to the Under 43.5 (-105). My predicted score is only a half-point off, which means the line is perfect (in my head).

Washington at Cowboys: Game notes

  • Washington already picked up a head-to-head win over Dallas in October, a 25-3 victory.
  • The Cowboys are 30-21-1 all-time on Thanksgiving and 8-1 on Thanksgiving against Washington.
  • Dallas is No. 6 in total offense but only 20th in scoring, averaging 23.5 points per game.
  • Washington has the fourth-worst scoring offense in the league, averaging 20 points per game, but are ninth in scoring defense, allowing an average of 22.7 points per game.
  • Washington QB Alex Smith has completed 68.2% of his passes in four games this season for 918 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Washington at Cowboys: Key injuries

Washington

  • WR Terry McLaurin (ankle) questionable
  • PK Dustin Hopkins (groin) questionable
  • LT Cornelius Lucas (ankle) questionable
  • Deshazor Everett (ankle) out

Cowboys

  • CB Anthony Brown (ribs) questionable

Washington at Cowboys: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Cowboys 27, Washington 23

Money line (?)

The fact of the matter is neither team is very good. Washington is playing better than Dallas, who has lost two in a row and four of five. But you can’t ignore the fact that Washington has one Thanksgiving win over Dallas in nine tries.

Take the COWBOYS (-150).

Against the spread (?)

Washington, despite the 3-7 overall record, has a 5-5 record against the spread. Dallas meanwhile has been a bad bet to cover, covering only two of 10 games this season. Two bad teams probably means a close game decided in the final minutes. That said, expecting a Dallas win, it is extremely hard to expect Washington cover and lose with only a three-point spread. Dallas has covered six of the last 10 meetings between the two teams.

Take COWBOYS -3 (+100).

Over/Under (?)

Both teams are pretty even with the point total. Washington is 4-6 O/U and Dallas is 5-5 O/U. On Thanksgiving, expect some firepower.

Take OVER 45.5 POINTS (-115).

Bengals at Washington: Game notes

  • The Bengals were dusted last week on the road against unbeaten Pittsburgh, falling 36-10 for the first non-cover in four games while a push on the total snapped a 3-0 Over run.
  • Cincinnati’s defense is allowing 398.2 total yards per game to rank 26th, 265.1 passing YPG to rank 26th, 133.1 rushing YPG to check in 27th and 27.8 points per game (24th).
  • Washington fell on the road in Detroit last week 30-27 as the Over connected for the first time since Oct. 4, snapping a 4-0 Under run.
  • The Washington offense has struggled all season, including a dismal 28th ranking in total yards per game (323.9). It ranks 20th in passing YPG (232.0), 30th in rushing YPG (91.9) and 29th in points (20.0).
  • On defense, Washington can hang with most teams. It’s allowing 320.7 total YPG (7th), 194.7 passing YPG (1st), 126.0 rushing YPG (21st) and 24.2 points per game (14th).

Bengals at Washington: Key injuries

Bengals

  • OT Fred Johnson (illness) questionable
  • RB Joe Mixon (foot) out
  • OG Alex Redmond (biceps) questionable
  • WR Mike Thomas (hamstring) questionable
  • DT Xavier Williams (back) questionable

Washington

  • DE Ryan Anderson (knee) out
  • S Deshazor Everett (ankle) out
  • PK Dustin Hopkins (groin) questionable
  • WR Dontrelle Inman (hamstring) questionable
  • OT Cornelius Lucas (ankle) out
  • LS Nick Sundberg (illness) questionable
  • WR Isaiah Wright (illness) questionable

Bengals at Washington: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bengals 29, Washington 23

Money line (?)

The BENGALS (+105) are worth a look as short dogs on the road. They have a tremendous passing attack, and QB Joe Burrow will be tasked with hoisting it up early and often with Mixon on the shelf yet again. RB Giovani Bernard gets another starting nod in the backfield, but his best attributes are his hands and catching the ball on short routes.

Against the spread (?)

The Bengals +1.5 (-110) are a better play on the money line, as catching a point and a half doesn’t make much difference. If they cover, they’re going to win. Just ML it.

Over/Under (?)

OVER 46.5 (-115) is the strongest play on the board for this game. The Over is 5-1 in Cincinnati’s past six against losing teams, and 3-0-1 in its past four as an underdog. For Washington, the Under is 7-2 in the past nine as a favorite, but the Over is 5-1 in the past six following a non-cover.
