Studs and duds from Giants’ Week 4 loss vs. Seahawks

Here’s a look at the studs and duds (and studly duds) from a 24-3 loss for the New York Giants against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4.

The New York Giants entered Monday night’s game with the Seattle Seahawks recognizing its importance. Falling to 1-3 with a tough schedule up ahead would almost guarantee they’d miss the playoffs.

But that realization didn’t result in better play. In fact, the Giants pieced together their worst all-around performance in more than a decade. It was so bad that even Joe Judge had to cringe.

The Giants failed in all three phases of the game and barely resembled an NFL team. And for the third time this season, they appeared to quit down the stretch. At the very least, they were unwillingly pushed around by the Seahawks to an embarrassing extent.

Here’s a look at some studs and duds (and studly duds) from the game.

Giants’ Wan’Dale Robinson ‘cherishing’ every moment of his return

New York Giants wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson says he’s “cherishing” every moment after returning from a torn ACL.

When the New York Giants selected Kentucky wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson with the 43rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, they felt they were getting a player who they could deploy in multiple ways.

The selection was met with some criticism as Robinson fit the prototype of a slot receiver and the Giants had just drafted Kadarius Toney in the first round the year before to pretty much fill that role.

But Toney was having issues staying on the field and the new coaching staff and front office were not taken to him, as was illustrated by his trade to Kansas City in October last year.

Robinson began his Giants’ career by starting in the slot in the team’s opener at Tennessee. He had one catch for five years before leaving the game with a knee injury. He would not play again until Week 6.

Robinson was slowly gaining the trust of quarterback Daniel Jones when he was injured again, this time for the season with a torn ACL. It was a shame, too, as Robinson was having his best game as a pro when he went down.

This offseason, the Giants beefed up their receiver room with Robinson scheduled to miss time as he rehabbed the injury. He was still very much in the team’s plans and would rejoin the team when ready.

This past Thursday, Robinson finally got back on the field against San Francisco. He caught four of five targets for 21 yards in the game and it could be a preview of greater things to come. Right now, he is just excited to be back.

“Oh yeah, definitely,” Robinson told reporters on Monday when asked if it felt good to be back on the field again. “Never having to really miss time like that before, definitely cherishing all of the moments being back out there and just wanting to give everything I’ve got with all of the snaps that I’m getting right now. It’s been great though.”

Watching from afar was difficult for Robinson but he stayed close to the team and made sure he was current on all of the other aspects of his job.

“Luckily, I was in all of the meetings and stuff even when I was hurt so it’s really been all kind of the same ever since I was rookie,” he said. “Just trying to keep the same schedule and stay on the same path. I’m just trying to continue to get better each and every day and talking with the older guys just (seeing) if there’s anything I can do better. Just watching tape and stuff like that.”

Robinson was on a ‘pitch count’ Thursday night, something that could continue until he proves he’s durable enough for a full workload.

“It’s definitely a little difficult but I’m just following the plan. Obviously, there’s a plan in place with the training staff and the coaching staff just with me coming nine months off an ACL. I’m just going to follow the plan and just continue to get better each and every day, just let my knee get stronger.”

Giants-49ers Week 3: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 3 game against the San Francisco 49ers. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants fell to the San Francisco 49ers, 30-12, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated on Thursday night.

With the loss, the Giants fall to 1-2 on the season and they have a growing list of injury concerns. They also have some personnel concerns, tackling concerns, catching concerns, blocking concerns, and scoring concerns.

Needless to say, there’s a lot to digest and discuss. But before we look forward, let’s quickly look back.

Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ most recent defeat.

Offensive snaps: 50
Defensive snaps: 83
Special teams snaps: 28

What immediately leaps off the page is that the Giants took just 50 snaps offensively, while the defense was on the field for an unbelievable 83 snaps. That alone is enough to tell the story of Week 3.

In his return after a torn ACL, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson took 11 snaps, which is only five fewer than were taken by rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.

Comparatively, veteran wide receiver Sterling Shepard took just two snaps.

Defensively, second-year safety Dane Belton took just a single snap despite the inconsistency that was on display by Xavier McKinney and Jason Pinnock.

Report: Giants’ Wan’Dale Robinson expected to play vs. 49ers

New York Giants second-year WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) is expected to make his season debut against the 49ers on Thursday Night Football.

New York Giants wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who is currently listed as questionable, is expected to make his season debut on Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL Insider Jordan Shultz reports that Robinson will be activated for the first time since suffering a torn ACL against the Detroit Lions in Week 11 of last season.

The 5-foot-8, 185-pound Robinson was a second-round pick of the Giants in the 2022 NFL draft. He had a slow start to his rookie campaign before hauling in nine receptions for 100 yards against the Lions prior to his knee injury.

Robinson finished last season with 23 receptions for 227 yards and one touchdown in six games.

Although the Giants appear relatively deep at wide receiver, Robinson’s speed and shiftiness will be a welcomed addition. He provides yet another capable target for quarterback Daniel Jones and should be a concern for opposing defensive coordinators.

It’s unlikely Robinson will see significant time in his first game back but there will undoubtedly be a package or two for him. Expect him to see between 12-16 snaps on offense.

The New York Giants picked up and departed Arizona today en route for Santa Clara where they will take on the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday Night Football.

The Giants enter the game far more banged up than the 49ers, but they have a couple of injury concerns of their own — namely wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (shoulder).

It was already a foregone conclusion that Giants guard Ben Bredeson (concussion) would miss the game but head coach Brian Daboll left the door open for running back Saquon Barkley to play.

“I’m not saying that he’s out yet. He’s a quick healer. I’m not saying he’s in (or) he’s out. We are going to take it all the way up with him to Thursday, but he feels a lot better today. I just talked to him. So, we will see where we are at,” Daboll said on Tuesday.

Ultimately, that proved to be a little pie-in-the-sky. Barkley and Bredeson were among four who won’t suit up in Week 3.

Full injury reports for both the Giants and 49ers can be found below:

Giants injury report: Saquon Barkley has made ‘considerable progress’

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll says RB Saquon Barkley (ankle) has made “considerable progress” and could play Thursday night.

The New York Giants remain in Arizona ahead of Wednesday’s travel day to San Francisco, where they’ll take on the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Week 4.

Entering the day, expectations were that running back Saquon Barkley, who suffered an “ordinary” ankle sprain last Sunday against the Cardinals, would be forced to sit this one out. However, Giants head coach Brian Daboll is suggesting we pump the brakes on that assumption.

“I’m not saying that he’s out yet. He’s a quick healer,” Daboll told reporters during a Zoom call. “We’re going to take it all the way up to Thursday with him.

“He feels a lot better today. I just talked to him. We’ll see where we’re at.”

Daboll added that Barkley has made “considerable progress” over the past 24 hours.

Whether or not that is pure gamesmanship on the part of Daboll is unclear but Barkley does return from injury quicker than the average NFL player. And given that it wasn’t a high-ankle sprain, it would be possible for him to beat the three-week window.

Meanwhile, the Giants conducted their second walkthrough on Tuesday.

The Giants’ (projected) Tuesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), OL Ben Bredeson (concussion)

Limited participant: LB Micah McFadden (neck), LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), OL Andrew Thomas (hamstring)

Giants’ Azeez Ojulari doubtful, Andrew Thomas questionable vs. Cardinals

New York Giants LB Azeez Ojulari is doubtful and LT Andrew Thomas is questionable for a Week 2 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The New York Giants begin their West Coast road trip this Sunday when they take on the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale before a quick turnaround and a game against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night.

The team’s daily injury report was lengthy this week and included the additions of left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and linebacker Azeez Ojulari (hamstring).

Both of those players practiced on Friday on at least a limited basis, as did the remainder of the team. No one sat out but game statuses were still very much up in the air.

“Everybody’s practicing, and we’ll reevaluate after practice,” Daboll told reporters. “Those are discussions we have after practice today.”

Following practice, it became quickly apparent who stood the best chance at playing in Week 2 and who was likely to sit out.

Full injury reports for both the Giants and Cardinals can be found below:

Giants injury report: Andrew Thomas, Azeez Ojulari limited

New York Giants LT Andrew Thomas and LB Azeez Ojulari were limited on Thursday and their status for Sunday’s game is up in the air.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Thursday following a scary scene the day prior. Practice squad cornerback Amani Oruwariye was injured on a kickoff drill and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Thankfully, Oruwariye was back at team facilities for the team’s second practice of the week and had full function in his extremities.

Meanwhile, left tackle Andrew Thomas and right end Darren Waller each returned to practice.

The Giants’ Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: WR Sterling Shepard (rest)

Limited participant: OL Andrew Thomas (hamstring), K Graham Gano (ankle), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), CB Deonte Banks (calf), LB Cam Brown (ankle), CB Cor’Dale Flott (hamstring), LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring), S Gervarrius Owens (hamstring), OL Matt Peart (elbow), TE Darren Waller (hamstring/rest)

Giants injury report: Andrew Thomas, Darren Waller don’t practice

New York Giants LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and TE Darren Waller (hamstring) did not practice on Wednesday while other injuries piled up.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of the Week 2 game against the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale.

After their opening week debacle that included several concerning injuries, all eyes were on left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and his backup, Matt Peart.

The bad news is that Thomas didn’t practice. The good news is that head coach Brian Daboll says the left tackle is “day to day,” while Thomas said the injury is manageable.

The other bad news is that practice squad cornerback Amani Oruwariye suffered a terrifying injury on Wednesday and had to be taken to a local hospital after being immobilized and carted off the field.

The Giants’ Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL Andrew Thomas (hamstring), TE Darren Waller (hamstring/rest)

Limited participant: K Graham Gano (ankle), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), CB Deonte Banks (calf), LB Cam Brown (ankle), CB Cor’Dale Flott (hamstring), LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring), S Gervarrius Owens (hamstring), OL Matt Peart (elbow)
