10 of LSU’s 15 commits in the 2022 class rank among Rivals’ top 250 prospects.
Head coach Ed Orgeron and the staff were off to a hot start on the 2022 recruiting trail. They were among the top four classes but have cooled off recently. Despite losing a pledge from a top-two safety in Jacoby Mathews, they are still in the top 10 classes for 2022.
Looking at the different rankings, 247Sports composite has the ’22 class as the No. 6 overall class. ESPN ranks the Tigers at No. 6 as well. Rivals has the LSU Tigers as the No. 7 ranked recruiting class in 2022.
The Tigers have a total of 15 recruits committed to the class. Of the 15 commits, 10 fall in the Rivals top 250 prospects.
We take a look at where each of the 10 commits are ranked among their peers.
The LSU Tigers find themselves in the running for 2023 five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson a week before his commitment date.
The LSU Tigers received some more positive recruiting news on Sunday afternoon. Malachi Nelson, a 2023 five-star quarterback, named the Tigers among the top seven schools for his recruitment. The Tigers were among one of the first schools to offer the talented gunslinger from Los Alamitos, California.
During the 2021 recruiting cycle, the Tigers were able to sign a talented quarterback from Texas in Garrett Nussmeier. In the following class, LSU added a commitment from the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the country, Walker Howard. Could the Bayou Bengals go three for three with another five-star talent? That remains to be seen, but the answer will come fairly quickly as Nelson has set his commitment date for a week from Sunday.
In a shortened 2020 season, Nelson threw for 1,513 yards with 23 touchdowns and four interceptions. Currently feels as though the Oklahoma Sooners are the lead dog in the hunt for his commitment according to all the recruiting analysts that have made a prediction. Lincoln Riley takes a quarterback every other cycle and he doesn’t have one for 2022.

How LSU commit Walker Howard is performing in the Elite 11 Finals.
Currently in Manhattan Beach, California, the best quarterback recruits from across the country are putting their skills on display. Among the participants, the SEC Conference has four participants.
Texas A&M commit Conner Weigman, Alabama commit Ty Simpson, Florida commit Nick Evers, and of course, LSU commit Walker Howard.
Howard is currently the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class just behind Ohio State commit, Quinn Ewers. Ewers is another top passer that is in attendance for the Elite 11 Finals.
According to 247Sports, Howard has been up and down in the three-day event with one day left:
Ranking: No. 8
Despite an up-and-down performance in the 7v7 portion of the event that probably left a bad taste in his mouth, the rhythm (or lack therof) with his receivers may have played a role in that. What didn’t affect him was the quickness and efficiency needed in the target challenge, with the LSU verbal finishing third in the competition.
With just one day left in the event, Howard seems to be in good standing at this point. Being one of the best 11 quarterbacks in the country is a feat in itself. Howard looks to lead the LSU Tigers’ 2022 recruiting class and hopefully bring back the championship-level aspirations to the football team. After a down season in 2020, the fans that pack Tigers Stadium are ready for more roaring Saturdays this season.

The full tracker for the LSU Tigers’ 2022 recruiting class
In the game of college football, recruiting is oftentimes more competitive than the games themselves. For the LSU Tigers and head coach Ed Orgeron, they have one of the top classes according to most recruiting boards. In fact, at this point in time, the Tigers are No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference.
The 2022 class is led by a five-star quarterback from Lafayette, Louisiana, Walker Howard. Currently listed as the No. 2 quarterback in the class behind Ohio State Buckeyes‘ commit Quinn Ewers. The QB commit is a top 20 player nationally and is expected to become the guy in the very near future in Death Valley. The Tigers have high hopes he can replicate the success of Joe Burrow and bring home another national championship.
Just below Howard, Will Campbell and Jacoby Mathews are the other two five-star commits to bring their total to three at this point. These rankings courtesy of 247Sports composite boards. LSU has a total of 11 commits and the staff is just getting started with their 2022 class. Last year, the Tigers finished with the No. 3 class overall and No. 2 in the SEC just behind the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The full breakdown of the LSU Tigers’ 2022 commits. This will be updated as more prospects pledge to play for the Tigers.
LSU 2021 signee Jack Bech originally committed to the Vanderbilt Commodores in March.
LSU 2021 signee Jack Bech originally committed to the Vanderbilt Commodores in March.
However, the St. Thomas More (Lafayette, Louisiana) standout picked up an offer from in-state LSU back in October, and everything changed for the wide receiver/tight end.
Bech almost immediately committed to the Tigers, joining his best friend and teammate — 2022 commit Walker Howard — and signed in December.
In the midst of the excitement surrounding his commitment to LSU, Bech was still finishing his final season of high school football.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Bech had a record-breaking performance for St. Thomas More in Monday night’s win over De La Salle in the state championship game to cap off an amazing season.
Bech caught 10 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns in the Cougars’ 35-28 victory.
Bech was named offensive player of the game in the state final.
Howard capped off an impressive season in his own right, passing for over 3,000 yards and almost 40 touchdowns.
He plans on signing with LSU in Dec. 2021.
